I had Ubuntu. I got the same format and entered the full installation of puppy. All as stated in the instructions. I considered menu.lst but it seemed to me a little bit different than the instructions. After restart message written briefly mentioned and I was able to run puppy. The evening include copied menu.lst. I thank you for your help. Daton

Here is menu.lst configuration:

# GRUB configuration file '/boot/grub/menu.lst'.
# generated by 'grubconfig'. Sat May 23 22:35:34 2009
#
# The backup copy of the MBR for drive '/dev/sda' is
# here '/boot/grub/mbr.sda.313'. You can restore it like this.
# dd if=/boot/grub/mbr.sda.313 of=/dev/sda bs=512 count=1
#
# Start GRUB global section
timeout 30
default 0
color light-gray/blue black/light-gray
# End GRUB global section
# Linux bootable partition config begins
title Linux (on /dev/sda1)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda1 ro vga=normal
# Linux bootable partition config ends
title Install GRUB to floppy disk (on /dev/fd0)
pause Insert a formatted floppy disk and press enter.
root (hd0,0)
setup (fd0)
pause Press enter to continue.
title Install GRUB to Linux partition (on /dev/sda1)
root (hd0,0)
setup (hd0,0)
pause Press enter to continue.
title - For help press 'c', then type: 'help'
root (hd0)
title - For usage examples, type: 'cat /boot/grub/usage.txt'
root (hd0)

Please check it thanks Daton

I followed the instructions above, and I get the following when I try to boot into puppy from GRUB;

Code: Select all

root (hd0,0)
Filesystem type is ext2fs type 0x83
kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda1 ro vga=normal

Error 13: Invalid or unsupported executable format

Press any key to continue..._
Which then brings me back to GRUB.

Any ideas on what might be going on here?

It probably means that the file /boot/vmlinuz is somehow corrupted. You can try manually copying a fresh copy from the Live CD. Or you might want to consider this install procedure.

Indeed it was corrupted... was showing no data at all in the file for some reason. I replaced 'vmlinuz' with a copy from the cd, and now it gives me another error...

Code: Select all

Unizmaing Linux... done.
Booting the kernel.
Kernel panic - not syncing: No init found. Try passing init=option to kernel
I'm assuming it wants me to add 'init=(somevalue)' at boot... searched google and these forums for an answer and haven't found anything that works...

I would guess that there is a mismatch between what you have installed on your hard drive and the contents of your menu.lst file. You might want to consider another install approach.

Thanks for your continued assistance. I'll try the method you recommended to me earlier. Hopefully it'll do the trick, since the universal installer hasn't been working too well for me.

EDIT:
Thanks a million! Your script worked perfectly! :D

Thanks For the HOWTO

#147 Post by hatchiebird »

I was having difficulty getting puppy retro installed on an old Pentium II computer that I had in a closet for years. I finally got it to work after following your instructions. I plan to use the old computer for a music system at a vacation property. Puppy runs great on the old machine. Much faster than Windows 98 ever ran on it. :D

Thanks!

Full install of Puppy

#149 Post by howard »

Many kudos, CatDude, for your step-by-step instructions. I'm enjoying the result of my Puppy install right now. Your reward for the level of detail you provided, especially with the GParted and GRUB, is my successful install on the very first try.
Best regards,
howard

Stupid question

#151 Post by XmodAlloy »

If I have 3GB RAM, do I really need a swap partition? Currently I do not have one, would it be better if I did?
I am sure this is a REALLY stupid question, but i am rather new to Linux really, but I like it a LOT.

Hey CatDude...

Thanks for the easy instructions on a HD install.

Worked well...

But now, after removing the live CD I do get the GNU GRUB (blue page) that asks: Linux (on/dev/sda1 or Install Grub to Linux partition( on /dev/sda1)

If I hit the first one (Linux...) I get a Error 15: File not found
If I hit the second one (Install...) it does a check, tells me all is OK and has succeeded, ends with DONE, Press any key to continue,...and when I hit any key I get straight back to the blue page requesting the same info again...??

Now I'm really befuddled..........

All works on CD but NOT on my HD (as mentioned above)

CatDude -- Many thanks!! I did not use your guide, but it is definitely a needed doc. I recently installed 4.2.1 to a couple of older machines that are now quite zippy and much happier than they used to be.

I also wrote a step-by-step guide as I was doing it -- hoping for fame and glory on the Puppy forum -- but yours is so much prettier ;)

Randy Pete -- Did you run Gparted?

I failed to partition and format the drive before an install and got this very same error. For some reason GRUB wasn't being written to the MBR.

I rebooted from the CD, ran Gparted, and then performed a full install as described above. All OK after that.

Sponge Daddy..

Hey, we must somehow think alike.
I don't rightly know what I did..........just pressed a hell of a lot of buttons.....re-installed 4.2.1 to a full install, cursed a lot, went grey, smacked the dog, screamed at the wife, threw the kids out, and suddenly discovered that I fixed this thing.

And guess what.............

Yep.....everything works perfectly....(fingers crossed)

Yes I used Gparted and MBR and basically just re-did CatDudes instruction to a Full instead of a Frugal install. Thats when it all clicked into place.

Thanks CatDude, and of course SpongePop, even though I have already solved the problem much the same way you did.

Now...if I could just find my Firefox. pet 2.0.0.7 Icon, then perhaps I use Firefox too.

Pete

This is firefox 2, and will put an icon in the /root/my-applications/bin folder (the one that opens when you move your mouse to the left of the screen).

Congratulations on your successful install
