Ways to search this forum for problems/solutions
(Or anything else you might need to search for )

1st:
[and probably least liked, sorry JohnM] the Search button at the top of the forum pages
You can set parameters/Options to make this targeted, for example to, Search post title only, or Search HOW TO (Solutions)

2nd:
The most popular & often recommended, the wellminded Search

3rd:
Probably the least known about, but one I find very useful klu9's Search
Which you'll need a good browser/video for, as it uses Truvideo & Blinxvideo as well as many Puppy listings

Apart from, of course, your own favourite well known search engine

Tips:
The actual forum search doesn't search very old posts, so you have to use one of the other searches.
The actual forum search doesn't search for words with less than 4 characters, so you have to add an * if you need to search for 3 letter words.
BUT
The actual forum search is still valuable as it is the only one that can display results in a logical order (e.g. by date), and that has advanced search abilities like searching by author - or am I wrong about this?

Searching by author is very handy sometimes.

Additionally, you can click on somebody's profile and then you will see a link that will show a list of every post that user has made. Handy when you know who made a recent post but don't remember where.

If you go to the forum index, at the top right there is a link which will show all of your own posts. You can also access this by clicking your profile link from a post, as above. It doesn't work from the profile link at the top of the forum though.


If you want to give somebody the link to a post you found by the forum search, but don't want half the words in orange, you can edit the URL. there will be a question mark followed by some text, then an ampersand and more text. Remove everything between the question mark up to and including the ampersand. Like this:

If you want give a link to a specific post within a thread, right-click the little white or orange icon at the left of the "header" of the post. Go to "copy link location". Now middle-click where you want the link pasted. For these, if you want to remove the orange you need to remove everything from and including the ampersand to just before the hash sign, like so:

I like to trace the histoy of some topics and sometimes find they go back dozens of pages in a multi-page topic.

So here is some useful advice I got many moons ago for navigating the history of multi page topics (eg this Beginner's Help) back through dozens (if not hundreds) of pages.

Look for the direct page access area near the top right of the topic page - something like

Goto page: 1, 2, 3, ..., 273, 274, 275 Next

This lets you quickly select the first 3 and the last 3 pages then SLOWLY get to any other.
But how do you quickly get to page 100?

The answer is to hover the cursor over the page 2 selection to get the absolute address of page 2 (something like the following)

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/index. ... C&start=30

then check the page 3 entry which might be something like

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/index. ... C&start=60

This gives a quick rule of thumb that the start addresses increase by about 30/page
so a good guestimate for page 100 would be around 3000

Now select page 2 to get the page 2 address in the browser window at the top of the browser page and edit it to

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/index. ... start=3000

This should get you to around page 100

There may be some issues with the forums search - I looked for a topic with 'firewall' in the title that I know exists (since found it again cause I remembered who wrote it and checked their past posts), but the search wouldn't return it in three different ways of asking (all forums, past 3 months; all forums + keyword; beginners (the forum it is in) + keyword in title).

It isn't useless. Both it and the google search have their place. Sometimes I need the special options on the forum search page, such as searching in a particular section of the forum, or for an author...
