Puppy the hacker!!
Puppy the hacker!!
So I have copies of STD, Knoppix, Backtrack 2, and Insert. All based on other distros. Since Puppy is unique and built from the ground up, could there be a full-on security/hacker,retrieval/penetration version of Puppy with the programs you have all written right now that could be used for all the admin stuff and worms and virus checkers and scanners and cloaks and all that stuff? ( This is not a black or grey hat question!) I ask because of all the "behind the scenes" stuff I have been able to do, formating, searching drives, partitioning, and preparing, I always end up using Puppy after trying to use the "specialized" distros like I mentioned above. It's always the one that works after trying with the others. Some things are still lacking as far as 'completeness' as far as I understand. But it would be nice to have a rock solid, bullet proof, friendly distro that I can apply to security, penetration, forensics, and retrieval like Puppy already is. So, is Puppy able, and if so, what programs would be on it?

Hello brymway,
Alot of these apps can be made to run in Puppy, Can you please list the apps you use from the other distro's not already in Puppy.
Also post a request for these apps in new dotpups / pets area of this forum as someone may already have some of these apps running and will supply you will a link to download.
Lastly your request for someone to create a specialized version of Puppy may just turn out to be you. Once you have all the required apps running on your PC, you could add a special wallpaper etc and remaster your version and upload for everyone to use.
This is how TEENpup started.

Legacy OS 2017 has been released.
When I first discovered Puppy, I was (and still am) amazed at the ease with which it replaces all those "other disks"I always end up using Puppy after trying to use the "specialized" distros like I mentioned above. It's always the one that works after trying with the others.
eg. I always use puppy to partition and format disks, even if I`m installing Windows, (Not that I would ever do that LOL) And data recovery from a crashed "Doze" is a breeze. Puppy will mount a "dirty" drive R/O, which is a lifesaver. It`s like, I still use GParted, but with a sweet GUI.
LOL
I really wasn't asking for someone to build it. I was really trying to pick you smart peoples brain to find out what would be on it so that I could maybe try and put it together. I don't know anything about hacking except what I read and don't know how to use any of the programs that are on the other "it" distros. That's partly why I want a Puppy version, to make it accessible to someone who has grown out of puberty. I thought maybe one of you guys that had made a derivative had thrown a version together to use while you were building a super user friendly version. That's all. I'll do some more research on the programs though. Maybe I CAN contribute.
Interesting project concept brymway.
This is a similar type package. Quite an extensive list here: http://www.sysresccd.org/Detailed-packages-list
I think the biggest hurdle for these types of recovery/forensic discs is for them to be able to boot without issues into all the various hardware that exists, and then to be able to make any type of ethernet/wireless connection without hassle.

Maybe it should be called utility Puppy. Here are the three I have and have browsed around in:

http://www.knoppix-std.org/
http://www.inside-security.de/insert_en.html
I'm thinking I might start with BareBonesPuppy and add all the utility and system stuff to it. See what happens.

Good plan
'Retriever' might be a good codename
You might consider adding WIne and many of the Windows based tools, if that is your aim/target.
If working from within Linux then I suggest documentation. Many tools are obscure and potentially have power user effects, so knowing what and why you are using a particular tool would be very useful as much of what is available is not very well explained.

Very good point about the documentation. That's one point I struggle with; not having directions on how to use a program.'Retriever' might be a good codename

I've started this evening with FatFree 3.01 and started downloading everything from the utility, network and system menus. But I have a lot of learning to do what with getting other Linux programs to work on Puppy, learning to compile and things like that.
But there's no rush I guess. I'll just keep working on it. Thanks for the tip. And I do like Retriever.

Are you sure fatfree is a good starting points, Its an excellent Base for people who are Linux friendly, But for newcomers it can be difficult, Well the later version does have xdelta, what I'm talking about is that well the windows networking via linneighborhood is removed, samba, cups, etc. Your basically starting with something with all the doors & windows already closed and locked-down. well I would personally start with a full version, and have background test running to see if any security holes are being left open, when running default applications, that way patches could be made. Nothing worse than having a "Security Distro" unsecured. Building a sfs package would also be handy for those who don't need it all the time. Flick it on and do a test, flick it off and save resources etc.brymway wrote:Very good point about the documentation. well good luck, I'm interested in the outcome
ps "Retriever" or "Watch Dog Linux (W.D.L)" are both excellent names. I picture a dog sitting infront of an old pocket watch looking at the time with a matrix number background, but with 1010101010101
