Sites for Uploading Files

As there seems to be occational problems uploading here, you can upload your files (dotpups, pupgets, etc) to
this site if needed, short url:
http://puppy.makes.it
This will help conserve some web space and bandwidth here
However do keep a backup copy on your hard drive, I'm not responsible for any lost of data
I suspect they have a maximum upload size of 2M (imposed by the server) but I'm not sure. So for larger files you can try these:
http://www.xmailharddrive.com/beta/
login - puppylin
pass - puppuppup
file size limit = 20M

Total space allowed on puppy.makes.it?

Hi puppian.
What is the total space allowed on puppy.makes.it?
Idealy, we would have some kind of a public dotpup repository, where
everybody could upload their pup files and link to it in the forum...
However, I believe we need 200-300MB for a start and the ones I know
do cost money
Hey, what about puppy foundation here..?
I really believe, that is becoming VERY important, to have one(some)
very well defined dotpup repositories, that stay stable and not having
cluttering all over different places on the web.. especially if a user then
later follows a link to a dotpup and finds nothing, because its gone...
150MB webspace with ftp upload cost about 3,99Eur/month.
(thats my space now:
www.puppxlinux.de/www.petersieg.org/.info)
250MB is about 6,99Eur...
Any body out there, that knows such paces without costs/lower costs..
(I will also have a look)
PS
How to link to a file on xmailharddrive.com/beta?

Hi Puppian.
I have placed some *.pup file here:
http://www.xmailharddrive.com/beta
But how do I link directly to a file there?
---
I searched for free webspace.. all I found don't allow *.pup extensions..
So no good...
PS
Cheap host

Cheap host with high bandwidth:
http://livin4.com
(I use it so i recommend it - no interest in the entity whatsoever.)

I pay 60 Euro/year for 500 MB at
http://levanzo.de (with PHP, 1 MySQL-Database, and 500 subdomains(what is hard to find)).
This is quite cheap for paid webspace in germany.
I googled before to find out what people think of Levanzo.
Some said it is ok.
Some said, although there is unlimited traffic, there were cases, when levanzo had limited trafic. An example was given, when a forum was mentioned in the press, and had 30000 hits a day (I think 1 or 2 years ago).
Until now I had no problem yet, also with files of 60-100 MB in size (but they were not downloaded that often, just some dozend times).

Hi PeterSieg
They advertised it as no space limit (but even if there is a space limit, another free account can be created any time easily when needed). However as it's free, I won't expect it to be very stable
If more control is needed, PHP Gmail Drive may be a better option
http://pgd.sourceforge.net/
It makes use of the 2G gmail account (no log-in is required to download, so it's just like free file hosting with hotlink allowed). It's not so easy to setup with a free host (as it requires Curl, etc), but with a paid host it should be much easier
Files there can't be linked directly, people needs to log-in to get the files...

Hi,
just uploaded to puppy.makes.it the xpad.pup...
But again, how to I link directly to the file in the JohnM forum...
I think, we need web space, where we place files and link to them in
the forum...
Now one question is, what is JohnM limittations on space he can/is willing
to offer for Puppy..? Which limit do we have reached and (if) to how much
we can go..?
The offer from evanzo.de ist not bad (500MB for actual 4Eur/month)
Just 1 FTP account, if we must share/make it public... who then
checks what people are uploading.. if someone uploads any criminal stuff?
If we don't share the account, would mean, that all files must be send to
the maintainer of the account... impractical I think...
And then, still - who takes the bill?
Can't we get some more space on ibilio.org (subfolder dotpups)?
Anyhow, what I see are the following scenarios:
1. We get somewhere enough(?) web space, where someone takes the bill
(as JohnM does right now!). Idealy only *.pup, would be allowed.
Anybody?/Somebodies? are allowed to upload.
Someone must check the uploads to delete any stuff that shouldn't be
there. We must be able to place a link directly to the file in the forum!!
2. JohnM should limit the upload size to lets say 100KB instead of 1MB,
to give room for small pups and scripts etc... All bigger pups and other
stuff must be placed elsewere (hopefully on long term stable web space)
and just place a link to the file in the forum (as aleady done by MU,
Nathan F etc.)..
I still believe, that JohnM needs to consider some kind of reorganizing
his offered forum space. Probably deleting old(er) messages (not howto?)... We are growing!!
What about the puppy foundation here..?

Right-click on the link there and choose "Copy Link Location"
For example,
Code: Select all
Download xpad.pup
will give
Download xpad.pup

You can upload small PHP-Scripts, that allow passord-protected Uploads (like they are used by this board here).
They are just limited to 2 MB per file, thats the PHP-configuration you can not alter there I think.

i think anyone can upload Linux software to ibiblio
anyway, it used to work that way, i think
How to Submit
the public archive
i'm not sure if sourceforge has a public archive like ibiblio too, or not
Barry tried to get Puppy hosted on sourceforge, but
they refused to host Puppy ... they did accept Austrumi

BTW, most anyone can help with the
Puppy Linux Foundation but the more involved you are the more influence you'll have.
Well, this problem was brought up and added to the
Goals for the Puppy Linux Foundation wiki page when I created it. The main holdups are that bandwidth costs money, the Wiki server transfer has more of a priority and there are delays in communication between Foundation members (including Barry).
Barry has been using all of the space he has available with ibiblio.org with the latest release of Puppy and the PupGet packages.
Flash has posted
A Modest Proposal (to deal with forum's file upload limit).

I think SF.net does not intefere with your project once you're in. If Mr Barry had some differences with the hosts, it must be about some other issues, which you ought to know so the same mistakes wont happen again...
Oh, I thought the "Foundation" are YOU, guys. Why do some of you speak as if the "Foundation" is somewhere else ?

that is the point ...
Barry applied to have Puppy Linux hosted on sourceforge
they said no
it might have been useful, because some residents of Aisa were having trouble downloading Puppy from ibiblio, and sourceforge has mirrors in Asia
Mr Proverb wrote:If Mr Barry had some differences with the hosts, it must be about some other issues, which you ought to know so the same mistakes wont happen again...
the only issue i know of was that they refused to host Puppy
oddly, they did accept Austrumi, which as far as i know is a copy of Puppy (Puppy existed before Austrumi did ... i remember that the first time Barry ever heard of Austrumi was when i suggested to someone on the forum who wanted Puppy to have a slide show program, to try Austrumi, because it came with gqView installed ... i also remember that when i had tried it, it had Opera, which did not have antialised fonts ... i remember i had not only already got Opera to install in Puppy, but i got the fonts to work nicely too, even though the Opera docs said they wouldn't work with the statically compiled version of Opera ... i think it was Mouldy who wanted to use Opera with Puppy) ... Austrumi has left out some things that Puppy has, like kernel module support

Just make your dotpups into tarballs, the size should not change but most sites recognize the .tar.gz extension.
That's a bad idea - sorry!

The whole idea behind dotpups are, that one can download them and just
click on them in rox file manager... simpe and easy!
PS
Conerning sourceforge. I habe 3 project at sf. Once they said also no..
Then I explained further and they accepted...

The dotpup program could be edited to create a .pup.tar.gz file which it would recognize and unzip and run as well as normal .pup files.
I think it would be easier to modify the program than to try to get the rest of the web to recognize .pup at this time. ( maybe in the future)

Download Center Lite enables you to offer file downloads of any file type on your website, and log and count all downloads.
http://www.stadtaus.com/en/php_scripts/ ... nter_lite/
I think I have seen someone at the "Additional Software (PUPs, n' stuff)" forum using this script on his website to host a dotpup and post the link here... there should be many similar scripts out there (I think) ...

sorry...I'm wrong
The above mentioned scripts is about "download" but not "upload"
anyway, what file types a website allows can be controlled by scripts like
this
pup and scripts

Filename extensions are easy to cope with. It could be very simple: i've seen a popular site that lets you download a file using one kind of extension and reminds you to change the extension before using the file.
As to uploading, there are many scripts for doing so. The usual precaution is to screen files for malicious programs. The script at
http://ph-islands.net/example allows uploading of HTM. TXT, and image files, but this is easy to change to accommodate PUP or other types.
