MSI U100 Wind rtl8187SE WLAN driver

#20 Post by growler »

I've put a PET together for kernel 2.6.25.16

When you install this PET it will set up the driver for you. Go into the network wizard and wlan0 should be there for you to scan for wireless networks and set up a profile for your connection.

Still solid after quite a few hours online now and much faster than the flaky ndiswrapper marvell driver I have on the desktop. Still yet to play with WPA encryption though - a possible stumbling block.

Hope this is of use to someone...

MSI U100 Wind rtl8187SE WLAN, no DHCP

#21 Post by GeorgR »

Growler, thanks for the wlan driver.

But for me it is only a small step forward:
No problem to install Your PET and now network scan of puppy 409 shows all available access points.
But no luck with DHCP.
It is not a question of WLAN encrytion: with WEP or open, the result is the same.

In file var/log/message I found the following information with regard to wlan:

Are you using 4.1rc1 ?
I actually compiled this on 4.1 alpha 7 ... but I guess if you are using 2.6.25 kernel all should be well. I think it would be too much to hope that this driver will work with the old kernel in puppy 4.0

I've done some more testing with this driver with other encryption methods ... WEP is fine and solid as reported. WPA-TKIP also works - only just got it going so I will report back if it chokes - I am using it now. I am unsure if alpha 7 was before or after Tempestuous's WPA patches.

I have noticed an issue with my Siemens Speedstream Router. Having connected to it using windows XP - when I attempt a reconnection under puppy I can get a connection but no IP address - DHCP doesn't get me an address - I think there is some data cached against the mac address of the interface for the DHCP server??
I have to reset the router to factory default - bang in the username/password again and then I am away with puppy.

There is a firmware update for this Siemens Speedstram router 6520 - but I've been unable to apply it.
The Dynalink router has been pain free.

WPA encryption with RTL8187SE

#23 Post by growler »

Yes ... tempestuous I was a little hasty with the champagne! I had it going with WPA-TKIP but can't get it going again now - thought I saved the profile etc but she didn't come up on a reboot and half an hours messing around has not resolved things. The messages log builds up with a few connecting to SpeedStream messages and... establishing WPA connection ... then times out with Unable to establish WPA connection (or similar)

Might be up for another reset to factory setting on the router.

The Dlink AP/router with WEP worked really well and came up every time on reboot of the machine. I want to blame the router - since I have equal amounts of trouble with the windows XP driver!

I just provided the latest beta version of the RTL8187SE driver for Puppy 4.1 here -
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 747#237747
My package locates the modules in a directory which is different from that of growler's package, but consistent with that of earlier versions of the Realtek wifi drivers in older Puppies, namely;
/lib/modules/2.6.25.16/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/r8180/

Short quick solution for me : the new xorgwizard-automatic and xwin afterwards gave me 1024x600 , while xorgwizard gave me choice for 1024x600 but /usr/sbin/xinitrc_test showed only 800x600 . The 915resolution code is implemented in both xorgwizards and xwin, with slight differences in every script.

[EDIT]

Found the solution (s) :

xorg.conf created by xorgwizard-automatic and xorgwizard differ at many sections, most important had been the

Section "Monitor" #sectionmonitor0

xorgwizard-automatic had these lines :

HorizSync 35-81
VertRefresh 59-76

xorgwizard :

HorizSync 34-41
VertRefresh 55-65

Changing the xorgwizard lines to the xorgwizard-automatic ones despite the frequency warnings by BK gave me 1024x600 .

Also had two cards and monitors in xorgwizard xorg.conf : Card0=intel, Card1=vesa , which i had reduced to Card0 and Monitor0 .

PreferredMode in Section "Monitor" had additionally been

Option "PreferredMode" "PREFERREDMODE0"

instead of

Option "PreferredMode" "1024x600"

[/EDIT]
