So far it's only a very quick look - but just added the KDE SFS .. and erm , WOW !

icedock is still running ..uhmm..

On a 1024*768 screen - there's now so many items under some of the menus that it takes over the whole screen and you need to press ESC to get back to the main menu and desktop. (system tools/games).

Had a sound error running steamtuner/XMMS - was necessary to change options/preferences/output plugin to ALSA from the default.

Within KDE - Had a download running via firefox and thought I'd try a game .. (noticing there were many....) So clicked on Tuxracer..

Moments later a tuxracer screen appeared though offset to the left.. and a strange pointer - which updated about once every 5 seconds and therefore lagged behind somewhat .. The challenge of getting this onto the first line did keep me entertained for a few seconds .. however, I got bored on the next screen and pressed the escape key ... (seeing no other way out). This rapidly threw me back out to X. So I typed "startmuppy" having remembered it from this thread .. Now I'm back in standard muppy ... So at least I'm back .. but I think something wasn't quite right ....

Cheers, Adam.

Mark,

KDE is excellent, the only problems I've noted are with programs that also don't work in other desktop environments and primarily while using "Icewm + KDE-Panel (Kicker)". Using "Icewm + KDE-Panel (Kicker)", there have been no instances of intermittent problems that have occurred with other desktops. Of course, the gnome desktop is solid too, except for the problems I've noted previously in the Places Menu.

Another thing, with KDE desktop, using SFS-Combiner to combine your addons and office sfs, it was successful. I'm now using the new addons-office sfs along with gnome and KDE sfs. All I needed to do to get Openoffice working was edit the paths of menu items. I haven't noticed any other problems with the new addons-office_084.sfs.

Apparently, most of the intermittent problems are related to instability in Compiz. Another thing, the optical drive icons, both point to the same drive just as it did in beta1. Pmount, MUT, and Muppy Quickmount show them correctly. Tuxracer, noted above by pigshed, will not open on my system. Haven't tried other games other than Tetravex which worked fine.

Thank you for a fine distribution that has many great features.

Jim

Hi Mark,

More bits ..

To get my PCMCIA card USB2 adapter and then a device plugged into it working, I need to run modprobe ehci_hcd and modprobe ohci_hcd - then moments later two devices appear at the bottom via hotpup. This is the same for when I use Dingo, though has been rectified in the 4.1 Alphas where they seem to run by default (on my machine). On the positive side - when I plug a mobile phone (two drives) they show up next to each other, in the 4.1Alphas both icons appear in the same spot as they're added simultaneously.

For some reason I have two "mnt" hotpup icons ?? both pointing to /initrd/mnt - is this normal ?

Another positive, which maybe a temporary quirk .. Since adding the KDE SFS, and being booted out back to normal Muppy - now I'm running a download in firefox - the strange thing is that for the first time in any of the puppys - I can still use the internet - normally, once I start a download it seems to grab 100% bandwidth.... I presume this is quirk I alone suffer from as I've never read anyone else mention it.

And a question, someone may know .... This is not directly muppy related, but seems to be firefox 3 related .. Often - I right click on a link and just want to select "open in a new tab" .. this doesn't always happen, it just goes off on it's own and opens a new window, saves it, or comes up with some other dialogue box. It's as if there are mouse gestures in place on a right click - though I can't find anywhere to turn it off so I can just happily right click and get what I want, not what it thinks I want... Would imagine if using this commercially it would eventually drive someone nuts !

Hot off the press : Firefox just crashed. Was entering the above (which was all still there when I ran firefox again). Clicked on Submit - then -as it was going slow - clicked on the www.bbc.co.uk tab which I'd set to load earlier. It crashed (that site seems pretty consistent at crashing Firefox 3 in all the puppys and all the FF3's I've tried). Unfortunately my download was interrupted again .. and it was so close this time .. it's re-commenced automatically, but from the beginning... Don't think I'll ever get to try the gnome.sfs .....

Cheers, Adam.

Adam,

You might try using Opera, which seems more stable, in all distributions, than Firefox. Also, you would get better results on downloads by using Pwget regardless of your browser choice.

Regards,
Jim

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the advice. Previous to the old (normal) muppy , the only time I'd used opera was on a phone -and wasn't impressed. Needless to say when I tried it on Muppy I was more than surprised and promptly fell in love. Whilst it seems more stable - and seems to continue it's downloads after a crash .. It does still crash . Unfortunately I found that if I ever set a flash download spooling in one tab, flicked off to do something else, then came back - the flash window just have just gone white and that was that ...

I'll try it again ... and give pwget a go ... !

Many thanks, Adam.

I just realized that Pidgin goesn't make sounds....and I see that it uses playwav....which also doesn't work.

My sound card in onboard and works fine with alsa, realplayer, etc. How can I determine what to tel playwav to make sounds, or what other
command can I use to call another sound program from Pidgin.

Thanks

wow
just tried out mini with addons and games
looks slick, it will take me ages to explore it all, the gtb apps work really well

some of the games on the fun menu do not seem to be installed
the size tab on the panel configuration is empty
conky starts before the desktop background is resized, this means that the fake conky transparency has the wrong image as its background

problems with help

there is no obvious help entry in the menu (though there is on the desktop)
of the three sources of help provided
klh's site seems to be taken over by junk
the link to oli's manual at puppy-linux.info now gives a 302 to puppylinux.org but does not direct to the manual, I suggest pointing at http://www.puppylinux.org/manuals/puppy-301 would be appropriate though the differences between trunk puppy and muppy would be a problem for a newbie.

Is the manual available for download? Seems that might be something nice to have. I tried wget, but not good enough to figure out the exact command to get it all.

Dyslexia Rules....I should have said wavplay doesn't work.

Wolf_pup was a great help....pidgin 2.5 sound works in this version of Muppy if you change the player in preferences to aplay.

Note: wavplay path to wav file doesn't recognize my sound card that is detected and works using alsa.

Update for Beta2: HPLIP (HP Printing system)

I bought a new ink-cartridge, so I could test my Hewlet Packard Deskjet 930 C.

In Muppy0084 beta2, Cups 1.3.8 works out of the box (Mini only).
Ran the cups-wizard from the Menu.
It was listed as USB-Printer, and I was offered the correct .ppd file (I just had to choose german instead of chinese).
So I cannot reproduce the reported errors :(

Then I rebooted with addons.sfs, and installed this HPLIP.pet:
ftp://ks301128.kimsufi.com/Muppy0084/Be ... 4beta2.pet
I compiled it in Muppy.

It will be 32 MB extracted.
It includes required dependencies, like libnetsnmp and PyQT from Slackware.
It does not include the xsane libraries, so if you want to scan, you must try to install a xsane package with gslapt or petget.

The PET will restart udev and cups, then run hp-setup and hp-toolbox.

Printers added like this, do not use an adress like usb:/ , but hp:/.
Once you print to such a hp:/ printer, you might not be able to print with usb:/.
This will last until a reboot.

So if your HP-printer fails with standard Cups, try HPLIP instead.

It took me 12 hours, to find out, why it would not print in first tests.
The reason is:
/etc/udev/rules.d/55-hpmud.rules
It sets up hplip to use /dev/bus/usb/, but Puppy 3 uses /proc/bus/usb
I corrected that file for the PET.
The issue is described here, as "Caveats 12."
http://hplip.sourceforge.net/tech_docs/ ... stall.html
Without this fix, you get:
"prnt/backend/hp.c 675: INFO: open device failed; will retry in 30 seconds..."
in /var/log/cups/error_log, if you set in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf the line "loglevel debug" and restart with
/etc/init.d/cups stop
/etc/init.d/cups start.

Please let me know, if it works.

Mark,

Still enjoying checking out this distribution.

Have you had any success getting the Places menu to work in the gnome desktop?

Also, the evolution mail program will not work. When running from a terminal I get this message. "# evolution
evolution: error while loading shared libraries: libpisync.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"

Thanks again,
Jim

No.
I think I will not pursue this further for 0084 final, it is too timeconsuming.
My intention to add Gnome basically was, to make Muppy compatible, to run Gnome applications.
Some of the non working entries or system utilities might have conflicts with the way Muppy works (e.g. as root, or some users/groups are different, or some daemon files are not set up correctly by my gnome build script).
I have to concentrate on Muppys desktop instead, as it needs less resources.
If anyone finds a solution, please let me know, so I can add it.

It should be in addons.sfs.
It is part of pilot-link-0.12.3-i486-2.

What do you get, if you type in a consolewindow:

Code: Select all

ls -al /usr/lib/libpisync*
?

Pidgin 2.51 by wolf_pup seems to work fine on the Live-CD
Will the final version have a later version of Wine installed?
With Firefox and Opera being updated frequently, can/should we
answer yes to the update question posed by those apps?

Muppy is spoiling me...I can actually be productive with it...and carry it
to various customer sites....THANKS!

fine, will be included.

yes, the latest from Wolfpup.
His pets always worked fine, so I will risk to add the newest one without testing it.

I just tried it with firefox, what went well.
But once I had not enough space in my savefile, what broke firefox.
I had to delete then:
/initrd/pup_rw/usr/lib/firefox
After enlarging the savefile and a reboot, I could upgrade.

I will add the latest Opera, and test before that, how the upgrade works.
Muppy is spoiling me...I can actually be productive with it...and carry it

Great, and thanks for all feedback that helps to solve remaining issues.
The final version should be out in 1 1/2 weeks.

very minor niggles
The terminal button on the gtkbasic panel opens a terminal in
/usr/local/GtkBasic-Panel $HOME might be better

I tried out compiz but then couldn't find an easy option to get back to the default window manager settings.

Perhaps you can help me....I only use the LIVE-CD. I alway have a 2 gig pen drive with me. Is it possible to have two different sets of save files. ie, home and work?

If it is, what steps do I need to take to use Muppy that way?

Thanks...and looking forward to the finaol version.

Mark,

You asked in reference to evolution not opening in the Gnome desktop.
What do you get, if you type in a consolewindow: Code:
ls -al /usr/lib/libpisync*
Command response is: ls: cannot access /usr/lib/libpisync*: No such file or directory

Thanks again for your fine muppy distribution.

Jim
