Vlc 0.9.x looking at the vlc forum is buggy and changing all the time....and a pain to get doing anything...I think it should be dropped for now and concentrate on a stable 0.8.6 which is pretty good as is.

Thats an excellent Idea, time to reset the pc, Since I compile live that means starting fresh. For my next project.

Thanks for the help with VLC ttuuxxx, it works much better than gxine and mplayer for me. I seem to have one small problem that is vexing me though.

If I save a media file to the hardrive and click on it, VLC launches and works fine. If I click on the Play icon, VLC again works fine. However, if I click on a link in a website (to view a movie trailer running QT for example), gxine launches instead.

I installed the VLC package on the first page as well as the VLC default package. Any help for a Linux / Puppy noob would be greatly appreciated...

ok what you do is right click on the file
select "Open With"
a popup will happen and select customize
then find usr/Bin/VLC
drag that into the listen box and close it
now right click the video again
select open with
and tick "Always open with"
select "VLC " from the list
click ok
now you it will automatically open with VLC
hope that helps

Hello ttuuxxx,

It nearly worked. I got to:

select open with
and tick "Always open with"
select "VLC " from the list
click ok
now you it will automatically open with VLC

When I right click on the file the second time, I choose open with.
The listen box pops up with a list of applications including gxine, VLC, etc with Customize on the bottom but there is no "Always open with" box to tick nor is there any list. I'll keep trying, thanks...

I wonder if the gxine plugin is still there and affecting things.
try about:plugins in the address bar.

Also have a look at download settings in preferences..may need to clear multimedia entries and start again.

I tried about:plugins and the gxine plugin is still there and associated with virtually every media file type. That could be what's causing gxine to launch when clicking on a web link even though vlc is supposedly the default player.

I've taken a look at the download settings in preferences yet I only see 3 boxes with various options "When starting a download", "When saving a file", and "When a download completes". Unfortunately I don't see anything related to multimedia entries or how to clear them.

I thought I might also be able to associate media files in the Helper Applications but the file type window is blank. I'll gladly take any other suggestions.

I really do appreciate all the help everyone has given me. I like to try to solve problems on my own but sometimes it pays to ask questions to those who know more.

delete the gxine plugin from /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins.
You might also have to install the vlc plugin if it isn't already. Or if you don't want to play stuff embedded in the browser then you might need to edit that obscure file to make vlc the default.

I copied and pasted the gxine plugin files to my-documents just in case I completely messed up then deleted them from mozilla. That seemed to do the trick, gxine would no longer launch. You were also correct about needing the vlc plugin disciple. I googled for a vlcplugin.so file but had no luck. If I find it, do I simply put it in the mozilla plugins directory?

If it really comes down to it, I can simply download certain file types to the hardrive then click on them to launch VLC. A few extra steps but not too much of a problem. Thanks again for the suggestions.

Witout the plugin you should be able to use ttuuxxx's suggestion of setting the default action.
Another option might be mozplugger

mike

the vlc plugin is only for pages designed for vlc

WHAT!?
You mean it still hasn't got a decent plugin? I was sure I saw the other day that it was supposed to have a generic plugin along the lines of the Mplayer plugin... I guess one can always install Mplayer just for playing embedded media :)

This will likely be my last reply as you've all been more than helpful enough, it's not your fault that I seem to be inept.

So I removed the gxine plugin, then after right clicking the file Seamonkey asks me what I would like to do with the file. I select "Open with", click on "Choose" and select usr/bin/vlc. All well and good, and I can see a tick box below which says something to the effect of "Always apply this action when opening this type of file". Now I should be able to check this box, but it won't let me. :x :x :x

Thanks again.

Hi, I just tried to download your PET file for VLC 0.8.6h at http://www.puppylinux.ca/tpp/ttuuxxx/pr ... -engv5.pet but I get the following error:
"Cannot read /mnt/w0112/d26/s17/b02c5192/www/puppylinux.ca/tpp/ttuuxxx/.htaccess"

Do you have it hosted somewhere else?

Also, I tried to compile VLC 0.9.4 myself, but I am missing libhal-dev and libdbus-dev, will you direct me to the correct packages? I found some Debian packages, but not sure if these were the appropriate ones...

http://ftp.ntua.gr/pub/linux/slackware/ ... ackware/l/

it has hal and dbus.
You can convert them with tgz2pet.
http://www.puppylinux.org/manuals/puppy ... l-programs

I personally prefer to create pets "by hand":

Example:
extract in a temporary folder the hal-0.5.11-i486-2.tgz, move "install/doinst.sh" one folder up.
Then run:
bash doinst.sh
That creates missing symlinks.

Then create a folder hal-0.5.11-i486-2
Move there:
etc lib sbin usr var
Finally create a pet:
dir2pet hal-0.5.11-i486-2

I just tried it again today and it's working now. I guess ttuuxxx must have changed access permissions (ala .htaccess)? Anyway, I'll give this pet file a try!

Thanks!

Thanks for steering me in the right direction! I'll give ttuuxxx's 0.8.6h pet file a try first, then compile the latest VLC if I have time later.

Compiling VLC is a pain, This version used around 40 pet packages, plus the latest one you have to manually disable the security feature of not running in root that they implement in version 9.0+ in the code.
