have a skin...

mike
I consider myself as one :)
Anyways hey mike I fixed that this version to use skins, I originally didn't want skins for 2 reasons.
1st it make the package 1MB larger, its now 11MB
2nd you loose the drag and drop feature. I'm lazy when it comes to playing movies and like drag &drop. Anyways here's the updated version with your skin you wanted, just open the menu/skins and it will have the itunes skin.
Place all the new skins you want in root/.vlc.skins2
If you want to go back to the original look with drag and drop, just delete /root/.vlc the whole folder

Hi ttuuxxx,

Would this be the best place to ask your thoughts on the VLC 9.2 ?

thanks

well it took me days to work this one out, I've tried 9.1 and it was a nightmare, You actually have to hack the code, Plus issues with ffmpeg, I've been actually working on 9.2 all day, so keep your fingures crossed
ttuuxxx
ps so far I'm using 41 packages to build it, crazy.:)

well I finally got 9.2 compiled and working, This one i compiled with qt and not wxgtk it ended up double the size of 8.6h. 9.2 is 19mb and thats on my building computer I haven't tried it on the testing computer yet. When I made the last one I found out I need to add a lot of libs. The dvd plays for a whole 1/10 of a second, but things like xvid,divx,mp3,mov,flac play fine. I'm going to try the flac module in the 8.6h and see if that would fix that choppy flac thing it had.

Nice one..... :)

If you don't mind posting the result so far I (and others ) could test it out...play with dvd etc.

For the slackware version of 0.8.6c I had to use the a52 plugin from the pup to get dvd working...lol

is qt4 compiled in or shared libraries?

The qt it uses is the default for puppy 4, which is included with the compiler, I still haven't tested on the other pc yet so i'm not sure how many libs it will need, I've just been messing around with it trying to get the dvd going. I might compile it with wxgtk again, If I can shave 50% off the size again, that would be great, really the 8.6h is a pretty good player.
Ok I'll package it up and start to test on on the other pc for missing libs then I'll upload it and so maybe you can give me a hand with it.

Congrats on 9.2

#68 Post by playdayz »

Congratulations on 9.2 ttuuxxx. I had tried also and it had me cursing loud and long!!! I didn't sound like a gentleman.

Now that you have found a way, it will be easy (I hope) to make the small tweaks and improvements.

Concerning 8.6 I tried to switch to skins2 and it crashed everytime so I thought the skins didn't work. Thanks also for posting the skins pack. In my experience some of those skins in the vlc skin pack crashed vlc 8.6 when I tried to choose them.

I am going to leave the compiling alone now (whew!) and make the following contribution: I am measuring each of the available media players with respect to cpu usage and memory footprint, etc. If we are going to talk about which one is "lighter," more efficient, etc., with a view toward recommending one for Puppy users, then these numbers will tell us a lot I think. I have already observed some significant differences and should have the complete report tomorrow or the next day. If you post a working 9.2 I can include that as well as 8.6. thanks.

Thanks playdayz
The 9.2 won't probably be ready for regular use for a few days, Hopefully I'll be able to bring it down in size, I was originally hoping on making it smaller without the wxgtk, I guess I was really off, lol

The skin pack I only faintly tested, If you post which ones are crashing I'll delete them from the package :)
thanks

Interface/skin switching when running can be buggy on vlc.....but launching with a chosen skin usually behaves.
Seems to relate to certain wxidgets/gtk combinations......even when skins2 is selected wxwidgets is used for the menus.

I was hoping using qt4 would give better behavoiur and smaller size but we shall see

have you tried the skins I posted, They seemed stable, in the menu theres a new listing called skins, thats where all 42 go, you don't need to touch the wxwidget or skins2 anymore
Still working on this 9.2 :)
should be ready for a alpha upload soon.

Hmmm

well its plays stuff...divx ok...mp3 stream ok...visualizatins ok

Dvd is odd...just plays a second then pauses...not crashes...I can even scroll through the dvd and the menu works....(and sound)

Skins 2 switching a no go..but able to launch with one.

heres an archive of your pet minus compiling leftovers
http://indogo.org/vlc_0.9.2_stripped.tar.gz

around the 13MB mark.

Oh and it runs as root just fine...so one less headache.

so not bad for a first run

Well the third try I got lazy and used gslapt, I didn't notice that slackware ffmpeg uses glib-solibs so it messed up my compiler.
I'm going to start over from scratch and try to make a small version

Hey mike if you want to take a shot at compiling VLC 9.2 source
http://www.puppylinux.ca/tpp/ttuuxxx/al ... .2.tar.bz2
That version I patched the root block, So it compiles and you can use it as a root user like the version I made up earlier.
Makes it easier that way:)

Update on findings with the original package...

dvd playback IS working...my putor wasn't keeping up...slow motion worked just fine with sound too!

asx stream worked ok but not handling real media.
Not playing flv either.

I'm wondering if the missing functions are all ffmpeg related rather than vlc.
Since ffmpeg is now external would it be a case of rebuildiing ffmpeg rather than vlc?

Did a configure run with the sources.seems happy but I need to go dependancy hunting.

regards

mike
