Since people seem to be having trouble with installing Puppy onto USB pen drives, I decided to help out. It looks as if I may be getting a new job and moving some 400 miles away though, so this project has been moving slowly. Profits will go to Barry and the purchase of more pen drives. If I can save enough money I can buy the pen drives in bulk and lower the prices. I would like to sell Puppy pre-installed on a pen drive for the same price as just the drive costs on retail web sites. Once I get things ironed out I will move the web site to a dedicated host. I was also thinking of offering Damn Small Linux pre-installed. What do you guys think?

Sounds great. What size are you looking at? Are you thinking of a dual micro linux keydrive - or is that duel . . . DSL and Puppy on the one keydrive . . .

I've tried the DSL lately and it still uses Firefox 0.91 (if i remember right). As many people will use the browser for important tasks, this may be a disadvantage in DSL. Guess now my choice? Yes, Puppy!

This is the lowest-cost Puppy-on-hardware that exists (unless you know of a cheaper product). Yes, guys, time to move on to hardware, where the users will feel fun in computing concretely

Check out the web site. All the information is on there, but the basics are 256MB made by Super Talent. Other sizes can be special ordered though.

It is fully functional and ready to take orders, but I am going to transfer it to a better server soon. It will retain the same URL (usb-linux.com) after the server transfer.

I hope people will make use of this Dan. Barry was thinking of offering a similar service but never developed the time to do it - so this would be ideal for a lot of people. As you are one of our long term Puppy users - yep I know you like DSL too, it would be good if the Foundation can use you as a test case for our "business"/user interfacing. For example the foundation should think of offering insurance, verification or something - not sure yet. I get the impression that you are offering this more as a service at the moment. Also (Babbs i think it is) is offering laptops (OK second hand) with Puppy and maybe that can be put on our shop page (wiki still being moved)

You might like to include this from tuxme. The thing is what is "easy" for some is not that easy for others.

The first distro (last year it was) I got working in a keydrive was DSL - it was pretty neat

"Next was Damn Small Linux and I ended up with the same errors as with Feather Linux. After spending several hours weeding through support forums, reformatting the usb key a dozen times and twelve different ways, I was dumbfounded. I was about to blame it on the hardware, a definite possibility, and go out and order one of those Flonix usb keys. On second thought I did lots more searching and finally decided to give Flash Puppy a go.

Flash Puppy's installation is very easy and straight forward and the only one out of the 3 that worked on the first try. You download a Live CD image, burn it onto a CD, boot into the Live CD and run a script to install the distro on the usb device. Slam dunk! Only about 15 minutes later I was booting from a 256mb usb key into a nice looking windows 95 style GUI with a 190MB home partition open for me to store stuff and have it in my pocket at all times. The only snag was getting a network connection to work but that was solved by (microsoft like weirdness coming up) NOT testing the network connection after configuring it. Go figure.

All in all, the idea of a full Linux distro on my keychain is amazing to me. Floppy disks for storage? CDs? Your documents on a usb key? Live CDs? Bah! I have my whole OS in my pocket Smiling"

I use a Super Talent USB drive (not for booting Linux, but for school work), and so far I'm very happy with it. So far it's survived a trip through the clothes washing machine and still works. Pretty tough stuff.

you should also install pizzapup on them also.

If your USB flash pen works with WakeUSB on older PC's (see http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?t=3352) that can't normally boot from USB, that would make your incentive even better .

Perhaps you have an old PC you can try WakeUSB and your pen drive with? WakeUSB can be booted from either floppy or CD - I've uploaded images for both.

All of my PCs can boot from USB. I guess I could get into the BIOS and turn that feature off, but I don't know if that would really be a true test. I noticed that if I tell it not to boot from a hard drive it will anyways if there is nothing else to boot from. I would love to test it though so we would know for sure.

I am puzzled as to how you would market this. All one has to do is to click the install to USB icon and it is essentially an automated process.

I can see the value to potential Puppy folks but those with Puppy loaded would seem easily able to make their own.

It's a neat idea we have been kicking around on the forum for a while as it sure beats hauling a CD around and is more flexible for the movement of files on and off, etc. Would make a neat Christmas gift!

I have a 1G Corsair USB stick on which I plan to install Thingamablog & Java, Perl & ndsiwrapper, sync software for my Sharp Zaurus, some Amateur Radio apps, etc.

Problem is on my uncooperative-for-USB-boot IBM ThinkPad 600X.

If you need your setup tested on my ThinkPad I have a Memorex 128 USB stick I can send you to load and then will test it here.

Sounds like you're the perfect candidate to try WakeUSB See my post http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?t=3352. It works on my old (from 2000) Thinkpad 240x with an unbootable USB1.1 port and a Sandisk USB 2.0 Cruzer Mini 128MB flash pen with Puppy on it...

Not everybody has a high speed connection to download Puppy with and not all USB pens are bootable. Even then some people are having problems getting it to work. This is just an alternative for those people.
