v1.0 - Start Menu, favorites, icons searches & widgets done

I created a single dropdown menu for the google search to choose the site you wish to search - I was trying to emulate a widget here, but I'm even more rusty on graphics than I was at html when I started making this site - so it may take me a bit to make the google "widget" look pretty. Also since this performs the same function of several of the other requested searches - they were replaced with "ask" and "webcrawler"
I also added flowcharts and games to the desktop and did some tweeking under the hood and some code fixes. Other than that I am happy with the interface for now and plan to mainly maintain and expand updated web apps from here. (Note that I have purposely left an icon space for use in puplets)

It looks like this doesn't work in vanilla opera.
I'm using 9.51 in Muppy-084. The application menus disappear as soon as I move the mouse off the category text.
If I do it very quickly it works. I suspect there is a small gap in between the category and the menu which means that the hover is disabled moving between the two.

Thanks for the report.
I had this working before I thought - I will see what I can do though I think I have a copy of Pupeez somewhere so I can test with Opera. I suspect its something in the CSS section, but may just as easily be fixed with align right vs. center or left (however it is that I have it now?)

If anyone is interested I can make a howto for customizing it for a particular puplet or different distro etc...

A suggestion for a search engine: clusty.com
Try it a couple of times and you'll never reach for anything else first.

That would be great ;)

Think about a default web page for Puppy 4.2

That is an HTML that can be provided locally within 4.2 and beyond

You will find some possible graphics here:
http://www.puppylinux.org/wiki/archives ... ep-thought

more potential links here:
http://www.smashingapps.com/2008/09/26/ ... o-use.html

These two links for spam reporting, from Aitch, could go perhaps under recommended
aprox where it says
'below here there be serpents'

For standard email or forum spam;
http://www.castlecops.com/sirt

for phishing [bank /ebay/ identity fraud];
http://www.castlecops.com/pirt

I apologize for not adding everyones suggestions yet. Many of the suggested links that have several sites take me quite a while to determine which ones aren't already included and then do the code for them. To help speed up the process I have edited my initial post to include the following templates:

If you would like to have a web app site added please use the following template to submit it:
Category:(Any category or subcategory in the start menu)

Code: Select all

<li><a href="http://www.urlofsite.com" title="Brief description of the app">NameOfApp</a></li>
If you would like to have a link added please use the following template to submit it:
Category:Link-(Any category or subcategory in the favorites menu)

Code: Select all

<li><a href="http://www.urlofsite.com" title="Brief description of the linked site">NameOfSite</a></li>
I still welcome other recommendations but it may take me a while to sift through large collections to find new apps now that I have so many ... screen real estate begins to dictate that I choose App A over App B - becomes very time consuming when I have to go through the whole registration process and then figure out what the site does and if its even worth including. On the other hand if someone already knows an app is good - Cut, Paste, Post - done

Thanks for your help everyone

Web Desktop now version 1.0

Posted: Sun 26 Oct 2008, 21:38

The Web Desktop has been updated with a new/cleaner "clearlooks" theme and a "Tools" section has been added to the desktop.

The next version will be 4.2 as it will be themed for the next community edition of Puppy. I would like to extend its capabilities as much as possible for 4.2 especially in the area of:
games - the more the merrier
more useful Puppy websites for the custom google search
additional web apps of course
Graphics - I am now also looking for a better image for the dropdown menu that blends better with the new "clear looks" theme

Hi Techno
more useful Puppy websites for the custom google search
Can you incorporate this one, as it now searches Eric's, MU's & ibiblio

http://www.puppylinux.org/home/search

Also, haven't I seen mention of tombh's petch?? If not, please add it

Keep up the good work - are you catering to foreign languages/blind/hard of hearing/etc disability access, at all?

Just a thought....

Aitch :)

@aitch - most of that search is also covered by the custom google search (that is why the wellminded search is now absent) but I like the better output and options so I may have to do some rearranging or replacing to make it work (maybe add google/Linux to the custom google search) ... petch has been on my mind lately to add if possible - however it may be beyond my capability or the server's (I don't know if servage can run perl scripts of if I could even modify it to work there even if it is)

@all
I am working on the games section for the 4.2 release so that the 100+ flash games will be categorized and run in full screen to avoid the majority of the ads. As much as I dislike the idea I may add some small amount of java script to open games in a full window for the web version. This is because stray mouse clicks during game play can cause undesirable navigation when using a regular browser window.

Web Desktop 4.2 will be released as a pet package(s) with additional features. Thanks to my recent discovery of bareview I will also package online games (and maybe some select web app suites) as .pets for the start menu. For a taste of what is to come, go to -->Menu-->Utility-->Gexec and insert this:

Code: Select all

bareview http://www.bestonlinegames.info/bestgames/Zelda/Zelda.swf
This is how the games will come up but it works for any address. It should be fairly simple to add online_games-4.2.pet and Google_Apps-4.2.pet and Zoho-4.2.pet etc... so that its not in the web_desktop-4.2.pet

I am taking requests now for which web app suite.pet gets built first (after I am done adding the games to the site)

WEB DESKTOP IS GOING OFFLINE TEMPORARILY

OK I found a somewhat recent backup and will be uploading it soon. I will need to reincorporate a lot of recent changes. I have also decided to integrate concepts from "The Pound"GUI distributed .pet repository (a separate project I have been working on) The online version in the web desktop will include more .pets including libraries and other dependencies whereas "The Pound" will be targeted toward new users and only have complete GUI packages with all dependencies included or otherwise satisfied in the default install (similar to Ubuntu's Install/Remove) and its help web page will instruct them on how to uninstall .pets or get additional ones from the web desktop etc...

Ok - its back up and better than ever - I have enhanced the theme and added a pet package menu

Not sure why puppylinux.ca pets do this but they start loading into the browser even when seamonkey should be using the default program to open it or ask what you want to do - The solution is to right click, save as and then install, but this is not very user friendly so I am trying to mirror elsewhere (besides we don't need it getting shutdown again)

The server is guessing at the mimetype of the file and getting it wrong.

Hi Will,

Yes the mime types seem to be a problem....the ftp server works ok but http will not accept my entries...grr

I asked John to put a ticket out to cpanel whm but so far I've had no reply.

I'm on it..alas I'm not getting very far with this problem. It seems Firefox works just fine....Seamonkey, Opera and Netsurf are broken.
