HP DeskJet 722C Subject description: Solved--Now Printing |
|
Dingo 4.0/HP DeskJet 722C
I have installed a HP DeskJet 722C printer using the pnm2ppa.ppd driver downloaded from www.linuxprinting.org in accordance with the Cups Web Interface Help (the unreadable purple Help screen that comes up when selecting the CUPS Printer Wizard). The printer is installed on parallel port #1.

Everything seems to be installed correctly. However, the printer won't print! It won't print a test page, it won't print a page from Leafpad, and it won't print a page from ePDFView. The printer prints very well in Win98SE, but I want to quit windows.
I have been fighting and putting off installing the printer but, I need it now.
If I didn't need it I would be tempted to take a "Sledge Hammer" to both the *#$@%& old computer and the *#$@%& old printer! I have tried to RTFM so aj won't get me -- it didn't help much.
Lost -- Need Help Bad!!

You might like to download Petch 0.3 from the "Cutting edge" posts, and use the cli to "petch hpjis". This will give a list of hp printer driver pets that when downloaded and installed does something behind the scenes to connect editors, browsers I think?. Anyway its worth trying (use download No8 the latest, after you`ve got the test page printed. remember you have to make and make install pnm2ppa.tar.gz to get all the files installed - letting puppy do it doesnt seem to work for me.

Hi Firefox:
I have found one of your posts dated 28 Oct 2007 it is about the installation of a HP 210C printer on a 301 beta Full Drive Install. It is quite a long post and suggests that the procedure outlined should be used for "712c, 720c, 722c, 820Cse, 820Cxi, 1000Cse, 1000Cxi, to print postscript level 2."
Is this what you were referring to? I have read it a couple of times and it seems very daunting to me. It is probably beyond my understanding and skill level. Certainly, it is not an easy way. In doing searches on printing I noticed that you had to fight for a long time to get it to work.
Also, in the current thread you made the following recommendation:

How does the post dated 28 Oct 2007 relate to your recommendation in the above quote?
Which should I try?
I have a frugal install of Dingo 4.0. What do you think the printer installation differences would be?

Hi Don
Yes thats the post. It`s only daunting the first time. Write down the instructions on paper by hand then download the various pets and simply follow the instructions. The petch program will find the list of driver pets and you simply choose the latest in the list number 8 - hpijs-2.8.5.pet then download it and install it after you`ve got the printer to print a test page.. I think it makes connections to the printer via cups and editors, openoffice etc.

Hi Firefox,
I have broken down and used Win98SE to get on the internet and print your scary instructions for installing your HP printer on Puppy. Around the same time that you posted the instructions there was another post dated 27 Sep 2007 for installing a HP 720C printer.
In that post titled How to setup my printer HP 720 C ?

to get your printer working.
I think I would try the ***.ppd file first and save it to your /root folder. Then start CUPS and see if it's listed.
If that doesn't work, follow the first link. You'll of course need the devx_.sfs for whatever version your using for the compiling. |
Is the second suggestion in the quote what your outline does?
I am way over my head but, I need to get the printer working in Puppy.
This is going to take me a while because I have to go on my annual visa run to Malaysia later this week. I will try to resurrect this thread and let you know my progress.
Thanks for your help.

HP DeskJet 722C
Color inkjet printer, max. 600x600 dpi, works Perfectly
Recommended driver: pnm2ppa (Home page, view PPD, download PPD)
Generic instructions for: CUPS, LPD, LPRng, PPR, PDQ, no spooler
Add a similar printer
Edited Notes
PPA printer, does not work with PCL drivers (as "hpijs", "gimp-print", "cdjXXX", "pcl3", ...)
(emphasis added by me) |
Used in Puppy Linux the "win printers", ie, HP DeskJets 700's, 800's and 1000, are the printers from hell!
I'm not the brightest bulb in the house; so when I need to print I use Win98SE and the printer performs perfectly -- almost. But, it keeps me using windows.
I have never gotten this printer to work in Puppy see this post I will try the recommendation there and pray -- a lot!

Now Printing!!!!!!! |

At long last I am able to print using the HP DeskJet 722C. I used the pnm2ppa.tar.gz assembled and compiled by rcrsn51. See this link
rcrsn51 did a really outstanding job -- I had been messing around with this since last September and had given up 3 or 4 months ago.

You need an inkjet printer to print in colour, especially if you want to print photographs. Most laser printers are black-and-white. Laser printers are cheaper to run.
To find a printer that will work in Linux, go here and look up some different brands.

Getting HP Deskjet 722C to work or any other hardware |
|
I am a relatively new user to Puppy Linux but here is a scenario you may wish to try if you are having trouble installing ANY HARDWARE,Printers,Scanners,Wireless etc. etc.
I had a HP1150 Laserjet that just wouldn't play nice ,no matter what I did,it just wouldn't work ?
So I booted a "Clean" version (none of my added packages) and tryed installing this printer .Lo and behold the "printer" said "sure enough" and immediately went to working..After saving that setup,I installed added packages.
The only thing I can figure is that some "packages" were offending the CUPS setup.I wish I was experienced enough to figure out why ,but I must leave this question to the more experienced.
This may or may not help you,but at least it is something to try.cheers
