I will actually be working on a web site soon dedicated to how Linux helps out in the digital arts (graphic design, music, animation, etc).

I have a planned name for the site, but I'm not announcing it just yet.

Check out Graphpup

#8 Post by Lobster »

Hi Nathan :)

I wanted to register and post this on your forum. I am a little sensitive and dealing with a new forum and a stylish but hard to view colour scheme was too much

http://producingoss.com/

Ever seen a book with black paper and orange text? Not many right . . . Partly because this is a common combination difficulty for those with colour blindness.

This sounds very harsh  but I suggest the value of using black (or dark grey) text on white with headers in stylish colours works well.

So please forgive me for not yet registering . . .
 it was easier to post here for now . . .

Also wanted to mention that I have OO running which is your work (in part)? How are you publicising graphpup? Where do the arty types hang out? Do you have any graphpup groupies yet?

Check out Graphpup guys. If this is the release version with all those add ons - then it has a bright future - wot difficulty reading this?

tsk tsk - is my choice of colour a bit naughty? What I meant to say is:

Point well taken on the color scheme. I'll look into what else can be done, maybe bright PEACH with pretty PINK borders and titlebars. Sorry 'bout that couldn't help myself.

I'm not really doing much to promote Grafpup right now as I'd always rather get things running like they should first. Now that I've got it pretty well put together I may give some thought to promoting it. It is on the waiting list for new distributions already and there should be some mention of this in the next version of DistroWatch Weekly, due out Monday. I'll also be sure to submit it to the search engines and the Open Directory. Beyond that who knows? I don't expect Grafpup to really reach a mainstream audience but I think it's great for it's intended purpose.

By the way, I often surf the web with elinks in order to avoid other's sense of style. You can't go wrong with plain text black on white.

Black on white is hard on my eyes at night. The more contrast after a certain point, the more effort it takes to keep my eyes focused. Grays are nicer. That's why I made the black rxvt use grey instead of white in Pizzapup.

Hmm... I never knew that about orange and black, I'll keep that in mind in so I don't use that particular combination for anything.

applications

#11 Post by klhrevolutionist »

Nathan your choice of applications are great!
And there are so many, you really put some work into this project.

OpenOffice reader's
This is a squasfs file named usr_more.sfs that Grafpup automatically mounts at boot time, like the compiling environment usr_devx.sfs. This is the full release of OpenOffice2.0 and hasn't been cut down in any way. Download the tarball and open it using guiTAR or a similar program, then place the file usr_more.sfs into /mnt/home and reboot. The office suite can then be launched from the icewm menu. OpenOffice is known to be notoriously slow, but be prepared to be amazed because Grafpup can launch it in about half the time that it takes on most operating systems.

I'm colorblind, but don't have much trouble with orange on black. Maybe that's more of a problem for those who have trouble with seeing greens. I have trouble seeing certain shades of red.

I do think colorblindness is an important thing to consider in designing web sites and graphics. I'm pretty sure my school won't ever even cover colorblindness though.

I know it's important for me to understand my own color deficiency for me to be a good graphic/web site designer, so I took the initiative to figure out my own deficiency a bit more.
