I'm new to puppy and have already learned Gzine does not work.

Can anyone recommend a new player for mp3s?

Two possibilities. If the problem is with gxine--which it may well be--then the xine-ui interface seems to be more stable and it uses only about half as much cpu as the gxine interface. Both use the xinelibs to do the processing, so this won't work if the problem is with the xine libraries--but my experience is that the xine libraries and the xine-ui interface work reasonably well in puppy 4.00. You can get the xine-ui under Install icon at the top of the screen in 4.00. Click Install and then PetGet package manager and scroll to xine-ui and click to install. That will also then make a menu entry for Xine after you restart (read the instructions as they appear).

Option 2. If all you want is to play mp3's (and not even streaming aac+) then beep-media-player is the leanest and most stable in my opinion. It looks and works like winamp 2. (It is so small and nice I keep it around just for fun.) This link will take you to the page that describes bmp and provides a link to download it..

The other media players audacious and vlc are discussed in these forums and you can search for them, but imho bmp is the least complicated, smallest, and friendliest for a newcomer. welcome.

I just noticed that a discussion of vlc is in the message right below this one.

If you only want to play music? - Have you tried Pmusic. The audioplayer made for Puppy.

I apologize for not thinking clearly zigbert; my only excuse is that I was thinking of streaming players. Was I right that Pmusic doesn't play streams yet?

VLC is the fastest but a bit on the large side
Xmms is one of the best for just audio
mplayer is pretty dependable except for a JWM bug i think
and xine-ui is actually usable compared to gxine
