NVIDIA drivers for k2.6.25.16 (puppy 4.1)
NVIDIA drivers for k2.6.25.16 (puppy 4.1)
I have compiled and packaged the Nvidia drivers for the new kernel of Puppy 4.1 (k2.6.25.16). The pet packages also contain OpenGL libraries (libglut and libGLU) and a test program glxgears, so you do not need to install the xorg_dri package for OpenGL support.
NVIDIA-185.18.14-k2.6.25.16.pet is for latest cards (Gf7 - Gf9, G200 -> )
NVIDIA-173.14.12-k2.6.25.16.pet is for newish cards (Gf4 ? - Gf6)
NVIDIA-96.43.07-k2.6.25.16.pet for older cards (Gf2 ? - Gf4 ?)
NVIDIA-71.86.06-k2.6.25.16.pet for prehistoric cards
Get them from http://www.puppylinux.asia/tpp/NOP

Hi gray,
Firstly thanks for the drivers.
And now the query.
The drivers you complied for 3.x
for my hardware(gf6) was 100.14.19 - gf5 to gf8
These version numbers seem to indcate that 173.14.12 would be the follow on version (173 higher than 100) but gf7 ? - Gf9 does not include my gf6.
Just a bit parnoid to try as in the past when I've destoryed X config its taken days to sort out.

Rename pet files
DC: I should have read my old post for applicability - tried to do it from memory. The fact is though that we dont really know which cards the drivers will work on - there is little info on the Nvidia site. I would experiment with the Puppy live CD and then try the latest driver first. As it is a live CD session nothing is messed up.
Max Headroom : Just rename the pet file to remove the -k2.6.25.16 from the name before you try and install, ie to NVIDIA-96.43.07.pet
The problem is that I renamed the pet files after they were created with dir2pet to distinguish them from the earlier kernel versions. Unfortunatetly petget doesnt like that and insists the name used to create the pet file is used
No need to rename anymore - corrected the pet files now

Gray or TomBH, I'm Clim'ing th' Walls!
M' Card is NVidia GeForce FX5200, I've got a Full SATA Hard D' Drive install o' Dingo 4.1 w/ 2.6.25.16 Ke*nel, First off I'm Unsure which is th' Correct or Best NVidia Pet Package U've Created NVIDIA-173.14.12-k2.6.25.16.pet is for the latest cards (Gf5 ? - Gf9) or NVIDIA-96.43.07-k2.6.25.16.pet for most cards (Gf2 ? - Gf7 ?), I Do get th' NVidia Splash Logo w/ Both I think, But I'm 'Ndevouring 2 Merge & Reconcile tomh Compiz-Fusion instructions http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=32242 w/ Y'r Newer NVidia Packages which 'R' Obviously Correct 4 My Dingo Ke*nel, But whenever I install a LibX.1.1.4 Pet or sumthing Simila' ( I Don't Remember eXactly ), But when I Restart as Req'd installing Libs X Fails & I Can't Even Use Back - up XOrg.conf File, Meaning a Complete Re - install ( I've Done this a Dozen or So Times So Fa' ) & M' Wife's Compounding things! ...
Will have to give up on this, complete no go. I downloaded all pets, renamed them, installed them, control-alt-delete to drop out of x and re-ran xorgwizard or nvidia-xconfig and end up with a frozen system.
BFG 8800 GT 512 OC
Xorgwizard shows Nvidia but unknown board and will not put in any settings. Tweak to set refresh comes up blank settings and I have to use vesa to get a display.
Standard xorg setting will take 1480 * 1280* 24 no problem.
Any suggestions as to what I am screwing gratefully appreciated or maybe to a thread which may enlighten me.

nope wrong kernel... there are probably links to drivers for your kernel in the compiz threads search the forum for 'compiz'
Taking Puppy Linux to the limit of perfection. meanwhile try "puppy pfix=duct_tape" kernel parem eater.

corrected pets
I have corrected the pet files so that they no longer need to be renamed. Just click and go.
Gray, thanks a lot for your drivers. It's amazing (and I'm very thrilled) to have the possibility of running nvidia's 3d acceleration in puppy, however, everytime I try to download something from your NOP files I get the following message:
How can your files be obtained? Are there any other mirrors?
regards,
Alvaro
ps. Quick question about the nvidia drivers. Is it enough with just running the .pet file to get hardware acceleration? What happens if I plug my usb drive into a pc with other graphics, will it load regular xorg drivers for it?
With everything and everytime, no exception.Concurrent download limit exceeded.

The unobtainable
Afecelis,
The puppylinux.ca site is seriously overloaded I think (puppy is a victim of its own success). I will try to set up an alternative download site.
As to your question. Yes, running the pet then restarting X will give hardware accelration and set up OpenGL (so no need to install DRI packages). You can test the setup by running glxgears or glxinfo commands in a terminal.
Unfortunately if you run on a USB stick you will get a plain old default xorg file when you try on a new machine. You have to run nvidia-xconfig to set it up for that machine. I then go into /etc/X11 and copy the new working xorg.conf to the file that has been set up for that graphics card-monitor combo so that next time I plug into that machine it will use that file and have the 3D accel set up at boot up, even if I have used the USB on a different machine. That way a collection of files such as xorg.conf.NVIDIABenQFP71G are set up for the machines that you frequent.

Excellent! thanks a lot!
I was able to get the drivers from another mirror, and now I got 3d acceleration. I'm getting 13000-17000 when running glxgears:
And with the developer's sfs pack I was able to compile yafray for blender! Now both blender and yafray are running great!
I'll see how things go when I plug my usb drive into another pc with no nvidia card.
regards, and thanks,
Alvaro
ps. I'd appreciate the mirror in case any newer version comes out.
