Coming soon - the best derivative EVER!

#1 Post by Lobster »

 Is it tmxxine? Is it 'Woof'?
Is it your new puplet based on 4.1.1?

Well . . .
We all enjoy creating and sharing our puplets
but I would like to invoke the Linux principle
Take loads
Give a little
for our next generation of Puplets

How can we add elements that enrich Puppy directly?

Here is my contribution
http://tmxxine.com/w/DingoAddons

Which I suppose can also be used in puplet creation :)

Here is the ToDo list for the best derivative - ahem- it is called Puppy 4.2 Deep Thought

I added some humble comment on the ToDo list

Before writing that comment I gathered some inner stillness to prevent me from writing I'm about to change over to Slitaz..

4.2 will be the first CE release in the 4.x series of Puppy.

(Sorry to mention that, Lobster, but the reader needs to be informed of the facts.)

With that said, all problems in 4.1.1 should be solved in 4.2.

I made a login, but this didn't seem to work.
The comments I wanted to make is:

I have the feeling that there is too much a rush for new technology newer versions, up to 5.0 f.e.
But the user-friendliness is still kinda behind and I think that's something to work on more urgently, specially for newbees.
I little example.
If you don't know what to edit to have a 24 hour clock in JWM, it's hell to find out.
Another one: a menu editor.
Another one: the roaring pinguin I used to see earlier (2.XX or 3.XX) was more user-friendly then the one now.
A closer look in the beginners section learns that there are quite some question of how do I have to do .......

i had downloaded a lot of puplet ver3.1 ,but had to reject just because i was not able to connect to net

:D i am a noob and only puppy is able to do almost what i was used to in windoze

.
Then install it on 4.1 from 3.0 series, this is how
first install
http://www.puppylinux.ca/puppyfiles/pet ... tched2.pet
then open the puppy package manager and at the very top you'll see
"choose pet package repository" and Select "Official Puppy 3"
select tk-8.5a4nothreads or the tcl-8.5a4nothreads package via the puppy package manager, it will then install the rest of the missing libs, Once thats done rest your pc or use the command line and type
fixmenu
then restart JWm
and if you look at the bottom of /menu/networking you'll see a new item called "Roaring Penguin PPPoE ADSL" click that and you'll have the older version up and running

Thank you ttuuxxx for the link, I bookmarked it.
But I expressed myself not clearly enough.

I would suggest to install the old type again in future puppy products as the question and answer session confuses newbees.
I discovered that in trying to help newbees.

That's all i wanted to say in fact.

I would contribute but have no idea what I should contribute. Mostly my experiencing has been in repackaging and bundling what other people already have made. I only code something when there is no other script to do the same task (so as not to reinvent the wheel).

That's probably the main problem. I've been happy with puppy since Dingo so I don't know anything really that I could improve. I mean sure, we could get binary comp with Ubuntu and then add apt-get and the ubuntu repos to puppy, but that'd kinda defeat the purpose of puppy.

That's all.

Probably one of the most frequent AND important updates relates to browsers. It would be good to have a simple way to do this. Often, they are security fixes, which can affect us all.

I must first say, thank you Bruce.
I applied his procedure and I am in 1.1.12 full options.

With this procedure you can upgrade any time a new version is out.

I tried to follow this. Crashed and burned again. Does it make any difference that I have Frugal install?

There is nothing to burn in the procedure.
I did the install in a frugal installation.
Use that part of the instruction where it says: install as root.
Do you have enough space in the pup_save?

Yes. I did follow the instructions from 'install as root'
577mb free in save.file :-)
Will try it all again later, and keep trying till I get it right..............

Thanks for the language lesson.
Success when you try later.
In the install gui, I changed the target directory from seamonkey to seamonkey-1.1.11 (the one of the actual install)
The gui asks permission to uninstall the 1.1.11 and warns that every customization done would be lost.
The only thing I installed in there were the spell check libraries.
1.1.12 did install and I had to download the spell check libraries again, that's all.

The new pppoe 'wizard' isn't bad,but I find the missing connection/bandwidth monitor a major drawback.I use rp-pppoe just for that single feature.

The last (and best) version that worked with the 4.x series was rp-pppoe-3.8-patched1.
Good luck finding that version now.
