Unusual database server load

#136 Post by raffy »

There is a reported unusual database server load at puppylinux.org, so am restricting access to the wikka wiki to read-only until the issue is resolved. Thanks for your patience.

There is a security vulnerability report here. And there is a curious referrer below
(don't visit this if you are not sure about the security of your browser)
[URL deleted - too dangerous for everyday browsing.]

On the other hand, was there a recent mention of the Puppy Linux wikka wiki in a popular website?

Your help/comments are welcome.

Did some googling about that message. Looks like Anon hacked the Wikka site and will try to replace it (probably temporarily) with a protest message, if certain government actions do not go the way that they are hoping for (SOPA, PIPA, ACTA, etc.). It appears that they have done and/or plan to do this to a large number of sites, as a response to that legislation -- although it's unclear exactly what they're planning, I wouldn't be surprised if they had a way to bring most of or all of the Internet to a screeching halt with this sort of thing, if their demands are not met.

Personally, although I will go right out and say I am not a member of Anon and I normally don't like what they're doing... this time they have what I would consider a very valid and important point. Were it me (and I understand that it isn't), I'd leave it there in (more or less) silent support. I don't approve of their methods, but I understand why they are there: when the established channels are ineffective... people get creative

It might also be worth pointing out... if they've gotten into that site already... they almost certainly can (and will) re-hack the site if it's reverted.

Since I'm using a sandboxed browser and am relatively secure, thought I'd post a screenie from that link.

EDIT: url removed.

What a nice idea!

Hacking supporters sites.

I think most puppy linux users do support anti sopa movements etc.?

What a nice idea!

Some statistics from germany:

In germany a survey found out that 50% of 14 to 29 years old people had already downloaded illegal files from the internet (chip computer magazine, www.bitkom.de). In germany we do have a political party (mainly acting about internet freedom) that is voted mainly by 18 to 29 year old people - so by most exactly those users who had already downloaded illegal stuff from the internet.

In my own experience i can tell, that most people i do know within this (18 to 29 year old illegal download) community are windows users. So, to me there is no surprise about sopa and similar movements.

These guys are digging our graves!

What a nice idea!

wikka URL in the Anon box

#141 Post by raffy »

Now I get it - one or two people inserted a wikka URL in the Anon box (see James C's captured image above), and that is sufficient for the wikka to experience page visits by the thousands. Talk about loose cannon (literally).

Now, don't be so naughty and try it. (I guess you won't, 'coz you won't know what happens to your browser if you visit that site. And I delete the URL now.)

Back to normal at the wikka (hopefully!).

web hosting account of puppylinux.org suspended

#142 Post by raffy »

The web hosting account of puppylinux.org was suspended just an hour ago. It looks like there is a suspiciously large number of hits at the wikka. Am working on the problem and hopefully will get netfirm's cooperation.

Update: 2012-04-12 17:00 GMT - After my initial support chat, ticket was marked "resolved" even if the suspended status of the site remained. The second chat resulted to a second promise to resolve the problem. We will see, but I sleep now (1 AM here).

2012-04-12 22:30 GMT - site is OK but the wikka is read-only while being checked for malicious access. [Later] The wikka has resumed normal operation. Thanks for your patience.

The new website design is nice but lacks some easily-accessible screenshots for the new-comers to gaze at to get some nice first (pre-)impression.
I used to only like Puppy as a friend, but now I think our relationship is starting to develop into something more... :D

Wikka wiki is down

#144 Post by raffy »

Was just advised by the host that the wiki was experiencing unusually high activity.

It is inaccessible for now, but I will try to get it back up in 12 hours.

FYI, thanks.

One of their folks came to the IRC channel wondering if someone from your website was online.

I just got back from visiting Puppylinux.org and when I clicked on the Wiki link at the top of the page, I got an error 404 page of file not found.
Does that mean the wiki pages are currently un-accessible?
I remember the last time the site was hacked and a lot of good information was lost!

That was the wiki running in a CMS, and it happened in 2009. We have reverted to wikka wiki since. As to that database, it has been recovered and made available for download by interested forum members (for a limited time, that is).

The wikka wiki is back as of July 2, 2013 1650H UTC.

I empathise with you, raffy...as someone recently commented (01micko..?), it's a jungle out there! As hard as we try to keep our sites secure, there are many whose mission in life seems to be hacking, vandalising, phishing/stealing and who-knows-what-other feral crap

Tar and feathers sounds good to me....if only we could lay paws on those responsible..
