Puppy Website News
I don't know much about this but what about Internode? They seem at least to be Linux friendly with their mirroring of Ibiblio.
I'm sure they host, and they are fast.

simple for now
It's back to simple website for now, at least until the difficult recurring error at the site is solved. It will take some time.

Re: puppylinux.org taken down again!
There was plenty of warning: it's in HostGator's TOS.WhoDo wrote:Hostgator has killed off puppylinux.org AGAIN! That is the third time and also without any warning whatsover; just a "beg pardon" AFTER the event!
I note the HostGator plan is called "Baby Croc." Now without investigating, I can only deduce that this is a lower tier plan. Sometimes in the interest of saving money we short change ourselves, which I suspect is the case here....the directory in question contains at least one script which was using more than the 25% CPU usage allocated to your account as per our terms of service.
Linode offers both robust hardware and excellent plans. Just don't expect visiting their site to be like a visit to the Family Dollar store.

Just as a matter of interest, puppylinux.org is now back in its more familiar guise, replete with Google ads to help pay its way (I hope).
@AJ - welcome back. TOS notwithstanding, an email to the admin with a chance to debug the problem before bringing the whole site down might have been much better customer relations from Hostgator. We are not your average home web site, and Baby Croc is supposed to be an UNLIMITED hosting package (their description not mine). It costs us (me personally) around $US100 per annum for the hosting.

Actually, a better understanding of the TOS and adherence to it would have prevented the shutdown of the site.WhoDo wrote:TOS notwithstanding, an email to the admin with a chance to debug the problem before bringing the whole site down might have been much better customer relations from Hostgator.
Read the destription and the TOS very carefully.....there are limits imposed...the site exceeded them and that's why it was taken down. It matters not whether it's a home web site, a corporate one or a hobby site....it has limitations. We are not your average home web site, and Baby Croc is supposed to be an UNLIMITED hosting package (their description not mine).
And you're getting what you pay for.....a web site with limitations. The TOS applies to all of the plans....It costs us (me personally) around $US100 per annum for the hosting.
well-taken
Points well-taken. If the revenues will be sufficient, Virtual Private Server is being eyed for puppylinux.org, such as this one by dreamhost.

But.....their restrictions point out that you may be asked to get a private serverraffy wrote:Points well-taken. If the revenues will be sufficient, Virtual Private Server is being eyed for puppylinux.org, such as this one by dreamhost.
What do you mean "Unlimited"?
What we mean is, you don't have to worry about disk storage or network transfer when your site gets popular.
You DO still have to worry about plenty of other things though... if your site isn't well optimized and is causing issues for others on your shared server (either because it's pounding the CPU, hogging RAM, or doing tons of disk I/O), you may be asked to sign up for your own DreamHost Private Server.

Re: well-taken
My site (that I never seem to have time to finish building) is on Dreamhost right now. There was a deal for new users back around January where I got two years of the unlimited bandwidth/space plus my domain for $25 (instead of $200+). That's barely more than the cost of the domain, so I jumped on it despite the fact that I don't have a finished site.raffy wrote:Points well-taken. So far it seems to be good hosting. I haven't done anything to stress test it though. One nice thing is that there's an easy Drupal installation method for the server. Thom is right about the CPU/RAM usage though. I think you will have that problem with any host.
Does Hostgator provide some type of log to show you what script is eating up the CPU cycles? Even with the heavy usage the site gets, I just don't think there should be high CPU usage unless there is some runaway process.

Re: well-taken
I'm in the hosting business.....and when someone with an existing site wants to me with me, I ask a lot of questions....you really need to know:SirDuncan wrote: Thom is right about the CPU/RAM usage though. I think you will have that problem with any host.

How much bandwidth does you site use per month?
You need to realize that nothing is unmeasured. While a large number of hosting companies say "unlimited", virtaully all of them have some sort of cap.
What kind of scripts do you use? What amount of memory do they use?
The large number of places which low-cost hosting are based on shared hosting....all the sites draw upon all the memory....so it doesn't take more than one bandwidth/memory hog to slow down the entire server....and everyone suffers.
If you know your bandwidth use and the memory use, you can talk intelligently with a provider...and save yourself from the unpleasent surprize of having your site shut down.
Does you host "oversell"? Overselling is based on the fact that not all sites are consumimg maximum resources at all times...so, you can load more domains on a server by playing the odds. Of course if all the sites are active at the same time...the entire server suffers.
And now the good part:
If your host harbors spammers, sooner or later the server ip will end up in one or more databases. Some of the databases don't list single ip addresses....they list the entire block.....so if the spammer and you are in the same block...you suffer when the block containing the spammer gets in the database.

Re: logs
The answer is "yes" to both. Whodo posted the log here, while the runaway process is shown there asSirDuncan wrote:Does Hostgator provide some type of log to show you what script is eating up the CPU cycles? I'm going to paste this in the spam thread for JohnM/Flash/PG's attention, thankstlchost wrote:And now the good part:

I've been saying it for a while - just doesn't seem to grab everyone, does it?
