Yes, & please count yourself in there Eric,.... yours is an increasingly important part of the Puppy community, IMHO - thanks

Methinks even without a committee we need to ensure adequate funding/support is maintained, to prevent getting a bad name due to losing control of advertising... is paypal an option?

ttuuxxx - c'mon man - get over it....the world's full of 'em, if you wanna keep looking/holding on to the past
I'm sure there must've been other factors in Warren's decision, but it was that....his decision, as will coming back if he feels like it

Onwards & upwards.....YO-OH....

Aitch :)

Hi Ya Aitch,

I miss lots on here as I'm not on the forum much.

Paypal is on all the front pages..all we need now is for people to use it and send BIG money...just kidding, as even a small donation is very much needed.

Best,
Eric

On some of the blog sites, I have noticed that they don't run Google ads, but run some good open source ads that don't change overtime. Maybe this is an alternative too.

Hya Eric,
Cool, will do, ... but I was thinking of the Community website
There's a link for donations to Barry....admirable though it is... he has said the community website is for us....so shouldn't it be self-supporting & have it's own paypal/donation button?
...or do we somehow expect Barry to donate something [more/financial] back to the community?
Now there's a hornet's nest for you......

Lordy Aitch...the donations that go to Barry are without compromise.

If a person says pay their donation to cause then so be it....no hornets nest as all the donations will go where it's needed.

I would have liked the education fund to prosper..alas there isn't enough money to pay for all the under-structure that's needed. Before anyone can donate to university or college needs there has to be cash on the barrel head...what a shame as there are people here that truly deserve help with their school costs.

Oh well..it's free software you see..Eric

looked at new web site

#96 Post by CiaW »

I just looked at the new website, under the temp new url -- and the only comment I'd make is that the graphic / picture of the desktop took a bit of time to load. Not too much time, but on dial-up in particular it could be an issue. I didn't look at the file size, but if possible you might want to reduce it's size -- particularly on the latest production release http://magicofweaving.com/downloads/off ... on-release page. edit: I just looked at the file size of the image on the production-release page, and it's 416kb, fwiw.

In case you're wondering, I'm using Firefox 3.5 with a 256k DSL connection under Fedora 7, IBM Thinkpad 600x with 256mb of ram. (I can't get the wireless adapter to work under puppy 4.2.1; at least not yet. That'll go in the wireless thread when I feel like making another attempt...)

You also might want to have some mention of paypal donations requested on the download pages...I beleive some folks will exercise that option, since they are on a download page to "get" something.

Re: Puppy Website News

#101 Post by stevoomba »

Hi, I haven't read right through this thread, but it seems the right place to ask a question I was going to post as a new topic: Can I help with editing the news page? Am I right in looking here:

http://www.puppylinux.org/home/latest-news

for the latest news, or is there a better news page? The items all contain very little text and I would be glad to help out if all is needed is someone say a little bit more about items that may interest the casual visitor. I've been using Puppy since about 0.8 back in 03 0r 04, so I'm quite committed even though rarely seen on the forum.

Please let me know if I can help. I don't do code or build puplets etc, I'm just a fan and I like the community.

cheers,
Steve

" Can I help with editing the news page? Am I right in looking here: "

That's the attitude I like to see.
What is also needed are Puppy reviews kept up to date.
The other thing that is annoying...Puplets.

Get announced...where are they.

PM the Crustacean one...Lobster,
may get you a prompt reply.

stevoomba.
Go over your way quite often.

Chris.

there is this
http://twitter.com/PUPPY_LINUX

. . . you could contact the Rusian guy and offer to dual twitter
contact prit1 or raffy to up your status to edit news on the website
(you can send a PM from this forum)

I would suggest using twitter - fast and up to date - and easy to use
You will have to persuade Raffy and Prithish about putting a news link to a twitter page if yougo thatroute

Tell us how you get on. Report back. Good luck :)

Actually I've recently moved to Rye Park, which is out near Yass. Here's my website.http://ryepark.triorbit.com/

I had lived in Katoomba from 99 to 07, but the name's a bit irrelevant now...

I've been in your neck of the woods a couple times on trips, actually I would rather live in the sticks than live in Sydney, My wife likes it here, but I like the open outdoors better.

My girlfriend and I are very lucky that we both wanted to live in the bush and we were finally able to make the move this year after her teenage daughter finished school and got a job and moved to Coogee. Then you couldn't see us for dust.

I'm with Jeff, I personally prefer to have news accessible from within the puppylinux.org site, as a simple /news directory, with a little bit of a blurb about each item. The last time I saw this was the May 5 entry which looked like this:

-------------------
Friday 01st of May 2009
Barry Kauler Returns

Barry will head development of 5.xx series of Puppy
Warren Willson (Whodo) will coordinate some of the effort

Blog announcement

Available today is an alpha 6 woof build from Barry
'Jaunty Puppy' is an Upuptu or Upup
which utilises elements of the best of Puppy
and the latest Ubuntu streamlined with Puppy magic

Puppy 4.2.1 Final release is also imminent
-------------------

I'd be quite happy to keep it going like that if people can email me stuff that needs to go there plus I can keep an eye out on the blogs and make an executive decision if something looks newsworthy. I think each new puplet could have an entry, and certainly each main release. People could pm me with stuff etc.

Any thoughts on what constitutes newsworthiness?
