I have a Puppy 4.1.1 running on an old thinkpad 560 p2 300mhz 128mb. I think the graphic chipset is a neomagic nm2200. When I boot puppy4.1.1 everything is ok, text messages are readable and I can choose xvesa 800x600x16 and JVM starts normal. every thing is fine, but after closing JVM (exit to prompt or power off) I get a garbled text screen. now I normaly have to chooe save file and so on. but this choices are hard to do if you can't read the text.
maybe the char set is wrongly set because caracters seem to appear but all look more like this "[(((||++||(([[".
can anybody help? thanx.
Problem - garbled text screen after closing JVM on laptop

I have a Frugal and a Full installation on the internal hdd. there is also a swap partition. The limited memory seem not to be a problem. The frugal boots up also as normal. X starts normal (with the default window manager, I think its JWM). At the first boot I decided for XVESA because I heard it is slimmer and it is working ok for me. When I choose "shutdown->exit to prompt" I get this garbled text screen. Then I blindly type "xwin" and the window manager comes up again and everything is fine like before. But every time the system goes back to a text screen like "exit to prompt", "reboot computer" or "power-off computer" I get this garbled screen. With the Full Installation this does not hurt that much because there are only a few informational messages and then the system switches off or boots up again like it should. But with the frugal installation there are a few important choices to do after exiting the first boot.
To your question technosaurus:
Does it happpen if you start up X and shut right back down immediately?
Yes, it does also happen when I start up X and shut right back down immediately.
The funny thing is that all text messages are ok before X starts. After closing X all text messages are garbled. It looks like text outputs are shown but with a strange wrong charset. Is it possible that X switches to a different text mode or charset?
