Can I do a type 1 install without a floppy?

#1 Post by shagpile »

Any idea how to perform a type 1 install without a floppy drive?
I want to put grub on afterwards but I just want a funky little system at the moment.

I have a 128mb hard drive and a type one is all that will fit onto it. Unfortunately a type one requires a floppy drive.

Help please :)

you just need to copy 3 files there from the CD:

to "/":
usr_cram.fs

to "/boot":
vmlinuz
image.gz

pup001 will be created automatically.

Then run start -> Control-panel -> Grub bootconfig.

yes.

Grub-installer will ask you where to install, select hda1 (hd0,0) MBR.

You also will have to tell it, where vmlinuz and image.gz are located.
There is a menue-entry in the tool if I remember well.

A 128 mb hard drive is not much to work with.

How much RAM do you have?

What kind of filesystem are you using?

Not meaning to be inquisitive, but if you answer these questions, I might have some ideas for you.

there should be something like this in your menu.lst file:

title = Puppy Linux
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/ram0 PFILE=pup001-none-65536
initrd /boot/image.gz

Can you boot from hdd?

If GRUB is installed on the MBR of hdd and you don't have the BIOS support to boot from hdd, it will not help.

Presuming that hda is also a hard drive, one would think you could install it on the MBR of hda.

I've tried to install Puppy on hdc and the GRUB on the MBR of hda, using Puppy's script and it never worked for me.

I'll be interested how you get it working.

Yes I can boot from the hard drive.
Yes grub is installed propperly into MBR
The hard drive is HDA not HDC

menu.lst?? I only have the main 3 files installed to the drive.
