Seamonkey-2.0 Final

#1 Post by 01micko »

People.

Today Seamonkey-2.0 Final has been released.

I have compiled the full version (with extra theme) and it should be suitable for most Puppies. There is no need for the "d-bus" dependencies. I compiled it in 4.3, which should be fine for 4.3.1 and really any 4 series puppy, also late model 2 series Puppies such as ttuuxxx 2.14X series and BarryK's 2.1.8 series.

This will install to /usr/lib and take over your existing stock Seamonkey shortcuts but leave your old seamonkey alone, so it won't break things dependant on old seamonkey (such as "PuppyBrowser"). In ttuuxxx 214 you will have to fiddle, but that's ok.

4.2x requires libgio...see page 4 WB7ODYFred's post

Just downloaded and installed in 4.31 and it's looking great so far. Really like the theme.

And thanks to gposil for providing the mirror. :)

Thanks for compiling so swiftly after release
Seem to be running OK
Have put a link here but the page needs updating

Update
Seamonkey crashed (bad monkey)
Seamonkey remembered what I was working on posting to the forum
after x refresh (good simian - no crowing from FireFox users - yes you have had that feature for ages and been crashing for ages)

Other than space, what are the implications of installing (or not) the dbus libs Mick?
Totally delighted with SM2 BTW. Using the 'official' download with dbus for no good reason other than I got started on it very early on.
Two killer reasons:
Built in RSS ability
Clicking link in email brings browser forward, instead of loading page BEHIND email client.
The way I have my system set up it loads slowly though.
Spup Frugal HD and USB
Root forever!

Hi DaveS

The only reason I compiled without dbus is because it's not in Puppy by default. Just saves some dependency chasing.

The compile i have planned for 4.4 will be totally different though. Look out for it on the coming weekend.

I already posted this in the 4.4 thread but I compiled the latest sqlite3 which will allow you to use --with-system-sqlite as well - should cut down compile time a bit and reduce the size by ~300-500kb (Puppy's version was too outdated)

--enable-chrome-format=jar|flat|both|symlink
Barry uses flat becaus it gets compressed better than jar and runs faster
symlink may yield the same results but smaller size

--enable-system-hunspell
Abiword can use hunspell for its spell checker plugin. I can add this with libenchant to the 4.4 testing - I will work on compiling the recently released 2.8 tonight with hunspell as the backend.

--enable-static --disable-libxul
Will make a large binary of seamonkey-bin (it is smaller and faster than using many shared libraries or a single libxul) In case you are wondering it does not use static system libraries.

anything else you need for better support let me know & I'll try to accomodate

Seamonkey 2.0 Issues anyone?

#8 Post by mattst8ler »

I have been working with Seamonkey 2.0 since the day that it came out and have had a few issues. I installed it the first time manually, and then when I saw this pet file, I undid the changes and used it. The problems that I have been running into have been with respect to websites that use java. Even though I have installed the most recent version of java, and have made sure that it works, websites tend to be really slow to load. Many sites seem to actually freeze up my machine entirely. For the time being, I have reverted back to 1.1.18. I was curious if anyone else had similar issues?

I have installed java to my home folder and symlinked to the appropriate plugin folders on seamonkey and mozilla in /usr/lib. I have also tried the version that came packaged with Barry's OpenOffice 3.1.1 sfs, with the same result.

Thanks in advance, and thanks for the pet (much easier to work with!)

Seems good Mick, good compile! Seems very stable.
I installed it on dpup and symlinked plugins folder from ff's to ./mozilla/seamonkey and tested with flash 10.
I did manage to freeze it (or at least it seemed it was, I killed it ) but that's with chatzilla, mail/Rss running and about 10 tabs opened
(at least 3 where flash sites, facebook, twitter, and downloading barry's huge RSS archive, see screenie  )

I like that chatzilla is installed by default and skin is nice,
speaking of it I always wonder where's that dark-blue skin from 2.x CE edition, that one is really slick.
One thing though I couldn't find is "Bookmarks Toolbar folder" ?
I don't see it in Bookmarks menu, so I can't place any links on toolbar?

Purely for testing purposes, I installed SeaMonkey 2 in Dpup.Working pretty well.

dejan555, I couldn't find a bookmarks toolbar folder either. My workaround is to bookmark the page as usual then go into "organize bookmarks" and drag the bookmark into the "bookmark toolbar" section. A little more effort but it works.

I was working from memory and used the wrong terms. Lets try it again.

Click "bookmarks", go down and click"manage bookmarks".Look for "personal toolbar folder".(see screenshot)

Drag bookmarks into personal toolbar folder and they appear on toolbar.

Sorry about the confusion. :)

I was expecting to find it in same place as you but it wasn't there, none of those folders, must be some bug, on first run I clicked import bookmarks from mozilla and that must have messed all default links and folders. My bad. :(

Seems to take a lot longer to start than Seamonkey 1.1.18. Especially with adblock installed. Is there anything we can do to speed up start time? No application on Puppy should take 10 seconds to start on a fast computer; it sort of ruins the entire experience.

With an asus eee 900, running at battery-saving 630mhz, I'm not getting that slow load.

Using a frugal install, I sfs-ed the pet, have that on my c: drive, and symlinked SM's Mozilla directories from my c: drive as well.

With SM 2.0 Final, I'm at my graphic-intense washingtonpost.com home page in under five seconds. Faster, obviously, the second time I start up SM. And from there, I bounce to sites much more quickly than SM 1.8.1

That said, SM 1.8 does load quicker than 2.0, but only by a second or so.

Does anyone believe there is a performance issue b/w pet and sfs installation?

Further testing shows the culprit is definitely adblock. I guess ads are worse than slow startup, but not by a lot. :(

I'm using adblock, and I still don't have that lag in startup.

Here are my timing results with various addons enabled.

No addons: 3 seconds
Adblock: 6 seconds
Adblock,chatzilla,Dom inspector,Javascript debugger: between 7 and 15 seconds.

I guess I'll try it on a fresh install and see if I get the same results.

Need to add that 2.0 is for Puppy 43+

#19 Post by maddog »

The owner of this page (http://puppylinux.org/wikka/SeaMonkey) should add that the Seamonkey pet is for Puppy 43+. I tried to install it on 421 and completely broke the installed Seamonkey because of missing libraries.
