The only thing that'll look good is some smeared, soft (low-contrast) gradient.

Convert it to greyscale in gimp, and resave as jpg you can test quality parameters and see how low you can drop slider without being pixelated around edges, also cut height to 900px, it's unusual format for wallpaper
