Cannot get 1440 x 900 x 24 resolution to work in X.org

#1 Post by Epsilon1962 »

I have an HP nx9420 laptop with Intel 945 PM Mainboard and a
ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 - 256 MB grapics adapter giving the default resolution of 1440 x 900. When booting Puppy Linux 4.1.2, the correct resolution is offered in text mode. However, when accepting 1440x900x24, I end up getting only 1024 x 768 resolution. I have examined the file /var/log/Xorg.0.log file, and I find the following lines (among many others):
(II) VESA(0): Not using mode "1440x900" (no mode of this name)
(--) VESA(0): Virtual size is 1024x768 (pitch 1024)
Where do I have to specify the native resolution (mode) to have it chosen correctly?

915resolution does not work

#3 Post by Epsilon1962 »

Thank you for the advice. However, it does not work.

I downloaded and installed the 915resolution-0.5.3 program, installed it and restarted my computer.

When running 915resolution -l I get the following message:

Intel 800/900 Series VBIOS Hack : version 0.5.3
ATI chipset detected. 915resolution only works with Intel 800/900 series graphics chipsets.

Any other suggestions??

ah sorry, I had not read carefully.
For the ATI you might have to install the fglrx driver.
http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/linu ... adeon.html
I think there is no pet yet for Puppy 4.1.2.
So it requires to download Puppy devx.sfs and kernelsource.sfs.

ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributio ... modules-4/
If you get errors during the installation, please post them here, then I can help you to solve them.
I cannot install it on my own, as the installer refuses to run, if no matching card is built into the computer.

How to install .sfs files?

#5 Post by Epsilon1962 »

Thank you again for a swift answer, but forgive me... I am completely new to Puppy Linux and I do not know how to handle .sfs files after having downloaded them. Any hints will be welcome, and sorry if the solution is too obvious to you. I am also concerned by the size of these files as my idea was to keep Puppy Linux installed on a small USB flash drive. Perhaps I will simply have to accept the bad resolution, the system still works perfectly, although the desktop looks quite ugly with the wrong resolution...

You download a sfs to /mnt/home/.
Then you run the bootmanager from Puppys menu.
It has a button to add sfs files, that shall be loaded at next startup.

Can someone make a pet file for ATI Mobility Radeon X1600?

#7 Post by Epsilon1962 »

I downloaded the .sfs files as well as the ATI driver file, and followed the instructions, but I am still unable to make progress, at my system refuses to unpack the driver file. I do not why because I should have enough disk space to accommodate it. I do not currently have enough technical skills to make more progress, so unless someone can make a pet file for ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 graphics adapter for Puppy 4.1.2, I think I must give up. Thank you for your help anyway - and thank you to the people behind this neat distro!

You can try:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=36567

It uses an old version of fglrx.
The Mobility Radeon 1600 is listed as supported model.

It might be better to have a new fglrx driver, but maybe that old one is ok, too.

Job done as far as graphics, but...

#9 Post by Epsilon1962 »

Thank you very much for your patience with me. That version actually solved my problem regarding the graphics resolution which worked at my first boot. Alas, it works with two important sacrifices, namely my wireless internet connection, and presently more important, my Danish keyboard layout which does not work any more. Both these features worked out of the box on the standard Puppy 4.1.2 install using the newer kernel version. I hope someone will succeed patching the newer kernel version with the newest ATI drivers, then I expect that everything will work as a charm...

I made no changes to network related files, so I wonder why this no longer works.
For danish keyboard, edit xorg.conf as described in my announcement of the iso.
I show there, how to replace "us" with "de" (german).

Anyway, you also can try Puppy 4.1.2, with this pet:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=29727

It might not have accelerated 3D in Pupy 4.1.2, but the 2D related stuff like high resolutions might work.
At least Dark Adonis reported success.

Despite the kind help, I never got the whole thing to work with Puppy 4.1.2. I either had to go for high resolution but no wireless, or wireless with bad resolution.

Now that Puppy 4.2 is out, I have decided to try again. I am willing to try to compile the drivers manually if someone can give me a step-by-step guide to doing it. Or, if anybody has succeeded building a .pet, then please send me a pointer to it.
