It's not really so much about need. It's about trying to provide a consistent interface/programs in puppy. The script is tiny and will only run if Portableapps is already there. 8MB isn't that much to download and store these days.

Wolf Pup has been posting here about wine and recently about g-pup, a barebones Pupy 4.1.2. If you combine the two, then you have a portableapps ready Puppy. See g-pup:
