Free NX

I've just installed 4.1.2 on a Wyse Winterm. Whereas these two things were made for each other, a big exception is NX, which seems to cause people problems, judging by some accounts.

There is a .pup for Puppy 2 or 3 (2 I think) available from one of the main puppy repositories, sorry - can't remember which one, it was late - which just installs and works! No muss, no fuss. Puppy gives a number of warnings about how it's deprecated, how you should only use stuff approved for your puppy version, how you might catch athlete's foot from dodgy old packages etc., but if you just ignore all this sage advice it just goes ahead and works anyway.

If anyone can tell me how to identify this, I'll post a link to it.

This is one app that might be worth including as standard. It's the unix equivalent of RDP, but sooo much better.

Hi Aitch,

I found the link:

http://rs59.rapidshare.com/files/105379 ... nt_1_5.pup

I don't know whether the 1_5 is the Puppy version it's aimed at or the version of Puppy (seems unlikely).

Whatever - It goes in without problems and works straight away.

Many thanks to all those that made this happen! I hope it either gets included in the distro or is kept up to date - It's an important application for me.

Hi

I think the 1.5 is the NX version

I also found the Centos/FreeNX Howto here

http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/FreeNX

Maybe someone could build a .pet for current puppies?

Aitch :)

What about a NX server? Most links / articles I see are in regards to installing an NX client on Puppy Linux. I'd like to install an NX server so that I can log into Puppy Linux remotely.

It looks as though it was tried a few years ago, but with 2.17....there were user issues

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=23838

NX seems to be only a free version, [unspecified if client/server] or evaluation version, both client and server....and they may need compiling...?

http://www.nomachine.com/download.php

What about tightVNC?

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=27424

last reported working in 3.01 and 4.0....

or 4.21

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=52859

or realVNC - There are two different versions; one for Puppy 4.1/4.2/4.3 and one for Puppy 5.1/5.2

good luck

Thanks for the post Aitch.

I wanted to try and use and NX-based remote desktop since I have found it to be a lot better in situations were bandwidth is an issue.

I imagine that where bandwidth is not a problem, VNC-based solutions are better since they seem to be a lot more popular / supported.

NX also requires a multi-user system, which I think might be a problem with Puppy.

I'll be moving soon and won't have the bandwidth issue, so I'll probably implement a VNC-based solution then.
