Pizzapup is Ready to Play!

#1 Post by Pizzasgood »

RELEASE CANDIDATE (Though almost perfect in every way, like me, it has maybe two flaws)
It is just mostly a normal v1.0.1 (so all those annoying kernal problems won't be included :)) but:
1. Comes preloaded with Firefox 1.0.4
2. Comes preloaded with IceWM
3. Comes with Timidity
4. Comes with GuestToo's wallpaper roxapp (and my hacks)
5. I removed Beaver (Lobsters around the world let out a sigh of relief...)
6. Put in JohnMurga's bootmenu
7. Added my new, less frightening splash screen
8. A couple icons have been modified
9. Includes my somewhat inefficient, but usable, version of a remaster script. (/root/my-applications/hackyremaster USE AT OWN RISK!)
10. It's 67,576 KB.
11. Removed Mozilla

http://pizzasgood.jaywebdesigns.com/piz ... um-rc2.txt
http://pizzasgood.jaywebdesigns.com/piz ... c2.iso.wav
(Save as pizzapup-rc2.iso)

Several notes:
You should probably start with a fresh pup001 file. Otherwise it could get a bit mangled.
Repeat: Use hackyremaster at your own risk. Lobster, perform a complete system backup if you use this :) If used correctly it should work fine, but if you try to break it, bad stuff could happen.
You can use the sendto menu to set wallpapers.
If you don't like my icons, the originals are in there somewhere...
I did not remove the 0, a, and b boot options. It just doesn't display them. I don't know what acpi is/does, (or if it's even in 1.0.1) so be careful with those too.
Firefox comes with some useful bookmarks :)
To edit the boot message when you remaster, edit the boot.msg file and just change the text on the second line and below. The first line loads the image, if you want to remove it.

To transfer stuff from your old pup001 file:
boot with option 2
rename it pup999
reboot with option 1
mount the old file (mount /mnt/home/pup999 /mnt/pupxxx -t ext2 -o loop,rw)
copy what you need out of it.
unmount /mnt/pup999
delete pup999 (if you want)

I think that's it. Have fun!

EDIT: Any bugs found today will be attempted to be fixed. I will upload a final version overnight.

EDIT2: Glitch List/To-Do List
+turn timidity "on" in livepackages
+make it stop rerwriting /etc/rc.d/local and wireless.conf
+Add help files

The file looks as if it is there but I am getting a 404 error

"the requested file is not found on this server"

Anyone else have better luck?

Grrr.... I just spent an hour and a half uploading that thing. I was just going to download it to test it. That would be another hour, so I posted first.

deep breaths....

I'll see what I can do. :(

Jay (my host) wrote:It seems as though archive files and exe files cannot be downloaded from members websites. Although I don't know why at this time I will look into it and let you know what I find.
So, I renamed pizzapup-rc2.iso to pizzapup-rc2.iso.txt as a quick fix while I wait for the server to get sorted out.

I'm currently at 11% of the download, so it's working.

EDIT: Yep, I'm editing this from Pizzapup Edition! Just make sure you rightclick the pizzapup-rc2.iso.txt file and save it as pizzapup-rc2.iso 8)

dot txt may not be a good idea

when you download text files, your download program often will convert it to the format used on your machine ... for example, a Windows newline is a carriage return - line feed, on a Mac it's a carriage return character, on a Linux machine it's a line feed character (or vice versa) ... so this might or might not corrupt the file

can you serve mp3s or ra's or anything like that? they should download without the text-file problem

sometimes your server is a Linux machine and ignores the extension anyway ... in your case though, the server is saying that the file is a text file:

HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK
Length: 69,214,208 [text/plain]

Okay, renamed as .wav (just to be different).

Pizzas good . . .

I am in - writing from a Mac OS Ice themed Puppy 1.0.1 - Using Firefox

Very nice - Leafpad is the default text editor.

Must admit I downloaded the .txt ISO (and it has worked) before it was changed to a wav - just rename without the .wav extension and burn

Booting into Ice is a very pleasing experience as a default (yes of course it can be added with other Puppys)

The help files seem to have gone missing . . .

. . but I am beyond help . . .

This is a good piece of work

Pizzasgood - I always knew it . . .

Whoops. There is a delete filesystem button in my remaster script, and it deletes the entire remaster directory (where the iso, image, etc. are stored). Once when I was working on it, I accidently ran it before I burned the iso. That must be when the help files went missing, because I specificly remember adding it. In it goes...

Okay, the final editition is done. However, my host appears to be undergoing maintinance or something, as the upload speeds have dropped from the previous 12k to 5k. I'm going to check back in a bit and try again. I suspect they are in the process of fixing the problem we were having earlier. If nothing else I'll wake up at 6:30 again and upload it then. I don't need to leave for the airport until 14:00, so I'll have time.

Running the non-updated version right now. Very good work, Pizzasgood. I have to agree with Lobster, that it's nice to boot into a new puppy and see icewm all set up and going for you. The desktop background, though, is about as trippy as the giant puppy head splash screen in puppy 1.0.2!

With Ice, firefox preinstalled, and no mozilla, it's puppy like I've always imagined it!

Thanks, and have a good break.

Don't worry, that was just for the rc. Though it is included with the final version if anyone still wants it (/root/my-documents/Wallpaper). I guess I should mention that it and the one I replaced it with are both from DeviantArt. I take no credit for them. I just put them in because they looked nice :)

happy hols

#12 Post by Lobster »

I am so glad Pizzasgood managed to get this done before that summer break - happy times - happy hols ;)

The download time was very slow for the ISO but at least we have it.

Can anyone mirror it on a faster server? The host was very slow. For those experiencing problems with hardware, this might be a solution. For those requiring printing this will be better than the 1.0.2 download.

Heh. I never claimed it was fast. And that's download. Try uploading the thing. I have to sleep now, so I'm just going to set it to go even with the 5-6 kb/s. Hopefully it will work right. It will be in http://pizzasgood.jaywebdesigns.com/pizzapup/
Give it about four hours. If it's not at 69,429,248 bytes, it's not done yet. The md5sum is in that directory too.

My host is still running incredably slow, so I created an account with 100WebSpace. My mini-site is at http://pizzasgood.allhyper.com/. Sorry, but I'm not allowed to link to the files. (you need to see the banner ad first.) I'm trying to comply with their regulations as much as possible in hopes that they will ignore me for a while. That will give you guys time to download Pizzapup. Then you can mirror it on a faster server if you want.

Only 22 MB out of 69 MB uploaded by pizzasgood's v1.0.1.iso

#15 Post by jt »

It's going to be mighty hard to burn a partial iso and then make it work.

I offer the following as proof:

Friday, May 27, 2005 11:11 PM 54 md5sum-1.0.1.txt
Thursday, May 26, 2005 11:27 PM 47 md5sum-rc.txt
Friday, May 27, 2005 12:22 PM 51 md5sum-rc2.txt
Friday, May 27, 2005 10:44 AM 69197824 pizzapup-rc-BROKEN.iso
Friday, May 27, 2005 1:53 PM 69214208 pizzapup-rc2.iso.wav
Saturday, May 28, 2005 12:51 AM 22602376 pizzapup-v1.0.1.iso.wav

I anxiously await the full upload of Pizzasgood's v1.0.1.iso.

Hail Puppy!

Faithfully yours,

J.T.

It's FINALLY uploaded. Go to http://pizzasgood.allhyper.com/ and save the link to pizzapup as an iso (not txt). I tried everything from wav to png and txt was the only thing that worked. Sorry. That page will probably be deemed "in violation of the terms of service" in the next couple of days, so get it while it's hot. Maybe someone can host it somewhere else. I'd appreciate it. I don't have enough time to do it myself. (I have bags to pack, music to burn, cds to dig out, pizza to eat (literally)... Hmmm, that reminds me, I need to pack my cd player or those cds will be pretty useless....)
