Playing music (Solved)
Playing music (Solved)
I a newby at this and I have a full install of puppy linux4.1.2 on my old desktop and everything is running seamingly fine except I cannot play music cd. When I put the cd in it show the sr0 icon and gxine doesn't automaticaly start. If I open and hit play comes up with error unable to resolve freedb.freedb.org. If I select mount it comes up with unable to mount sr0 in red box. I tried another suggestion on forum to go into preferences and change cdrom to sr0 and that still doesn't work. Can anybody help me on this?

playing music
I tried that and it didn't work. Sound was previously working like on games and stuff and I went into alsamixer and selected the sound device which I have es1938 125d: 1969 (rev 01). Wish I had left that alone. Because it is not working at all now. All I was having trouble was with the cd not playing. The system is recognizing the cd drive. Anything else I can do?
Jodi
Try this.
Go to Menu|Setup|CD/DVD drive Wizard and setup your drive first, then try rjbrewer's suggestion.
Are you getting any sound at all?

if the screen is pink, yes, if green just quitjodi5549 wrote:No I'm not getting any sound now. I went into the drive wizard and puppy found the=== /dev/sr0/compaq__crd-8322b which is correct on the model number. Should I hit choose cdrom or exit out? Do not have a dvd rom.

Ok I could not open up sgmixer so I open alsa mixer and made sure volumn is all the way up. When I click on the volumn icon at the bottom of screen it is all the way down so I slide up and it is not retaining that position. Also when I open up gxine you can tell the cd is playing by the line going across. Also I'm getting that error freedb.freedb.org when I select cd in gxine.
I'm not sure Jodi
It has something to do with Sgmixer being missing. I had that problem
with one of the early 4.1 releases.
If I remember correctly, I installed zmixer from the puppy package
manager to get it working.
Sometimes just rebooting a few times will get it working.
It would help to know some specifics about the desktop computer
you are using.
Some windows sound cards cause problems too.

It is a Compaq that I had xubuntu on and working, just didn't like the layout and check on the puppy and liked what I saw. I did a full install after and everything is working great other than sound. I had problem before with mounting the cd, but that is not the problem. It's just I've lost sound and now that error that I stated before. I did a reboot and was able to open up zmixer, but everything looks ok there too and the volumn control icon is working now. The cd icon shows up correctly when I put the music cd in the drive. Then I open gxine and select cd and hit play and starts to play for a second and stops only with the sound, I can tell that the cd is turning and that window comes up at same time with the error. Is there anything else I can try? Maybe I should put xubuntu back on which I hate to go through all that again. It's also showing the correct crd which is compaq crd 8322b made by LG. Sound is ess 1969 PCI audiodrive (wdm) if that's any help. Maybe it selecting the wrong sound, I'm going nuts on this. I totally new at linux and don't know what else to do. Please help me
Well if sound was working with Xubuntu it isn't a sound card
problem.
I would try zmixer from the puppy package manager. Just click
it and it installs itself.
If that doesn't work, I'd burn a different puppy cd. If you have
4.1.2, try 4.1.2 retro, or 4.1.1retro. Burn at a slow speed.
edit;
First try your 4.1.2 cd live....puppy pfix=ram

I never knew that screen would change colors; but than I never had a cd player problem.
The never ending question: is that green, or blue?

Nothing I can see wrong there. Try a reboot, if you haven't already.jodi5549 wrote:Is there anything else beside me reload an os. I did aplay -l and came up with the correct driver....Solo 1(ESS ES1938 (Solo-1), device 0: es-1938-1946 (ESS Solo-1)
Subdevices: 2/2
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
Subdevice #1: subdevice #1
Does this entry look right?
Gets me thunkin', we need a decent sound wizard!
