no sound on Compaq Presario 1245 laptop

I have installed several versions of Puppy - 4.0 and the retro versions - and I cannot get my sound to work. I was able to get Windows XP to install and the sound worked. I have identified the onboard sound as ESS1869. I have run through the ALSA wizard and have had no success. The configuration says that everything is working, but no sound.

Any ideas? I thought about trying to find out which windows drivers are working and searching for a way to install them in Puppy, but I haven't had much luck (or time) find a way.
