cp /dev/null /var/log/messages

The above command does not work in Puppy.
It does so in other distros eg Debian.

The error message "cp: unable to remove 'messages': Success"
results. I don't wish to remove the file, merely its contents.

Any ideas why, please?

try > /var/log/messages ... it might work
