I think, like everyone else who has suggested this over the last few years, that it's an excellent idea.
Unfortunately, too much emphasis seems to be placed on selecting the appropriate window manager or web browser, at the expense of these fundamental concerns. |
rcrsn when it comes to window managers, web browsers, software packages, graphics thats my area specialty, I've been known to make a few simple scripts and alter or build a few dialogs, but thats my limit. Other developers have other areas that they do well at. If you see a lot of post containing these areas its because I'm offering to do so and I'm very active in the forum, If I was able to say fix wireless networking or monitor displays I would, But thats not what I do well with, other developers are doing that in the background and don't really post much in the 4.2 section. So if its looks like its all bling it isn't other fixes and updates are continuously happening. Usually every release gets some sort of networking improvements. Since puppy 1.0 series the window manager was never changed and also only once or twice I think the browser wasn't Seamonkey, So what you see is groundbreaking for puppy and very exciting. If you have any fundamental concerns please state them.

Just noticing that Ptray lists Calcoo as the calculator, but it appears Galculator is installed.
On another note Just wondering the opinion on rxvt. I prefer to have the scrollbar on the right, and set the inverse on (so as to have a black background). It seems to go with the theme better. Having the scrollbar on the right seems to match the other apps also.

I just downloads some Fire Hydrant GPL icons, and one was 'SVG' format, I went to open it with inkscapelite and it wouldn't open, when I dragged it to inkscapelite it crashed.I then tried it with Gimp and it worked properly first try, call me silly but if inkscapelite can't open SVG graphics, why do we have it included? I think it should be replaced if it can't open SVG.
here's the link to the image that inkscapelite failed opening.

Aha! Another thing I forgot that can be added to the next release! |
Sorry, I was waiting to see what the icons/wallpapers looked like so I can make sure it all works together visually (and takes up less space). Do I need to get a clearlooks theme or is the current default going to stick?

WhoDo,
I redid sintot's weather script for 'NowTheWeather' font. Hmmmmm, it is a messy font! However it is incomplete because there are no night time icons in that font. We need a font editor!
Here it is but it is not up to release standard.

Thanks for your weather howto.
A couple of questions.
What change is needed in the configuration file for degrees F to show instead of C?
Instead of a weather font, I have a very large lower case a, how is this changed? The weather fonts file was downloaded and extracted to the /root/.font folder.
Thanks,
Jim |
G'day Jim
Sorry I overlooked that! Of course in the US you use degrees F! Open in rox, make sure you click the 'eye' to show hidden files, , /root/.pwidgets/scripts/WeatherIcon by right clicking ( , WhoDo) and select 'edit with geany'.
On line five you will see 'metric=1' change it to 'metric=0' . also on line 15 you will see | Code: | | curl -s "http://rss.accuweather.com/rss/liveweather_rss.asp?metric=1&locCode=$LOCCOD" |
Edit to metric=0. Save it!!! restart Pwidgets and you are done.
I was thinking to upload the font, but I don't think Whodo would approve, so I'll give you a link,http://www.dafont.com/font.php?file=weather. Download the win/mac version, it's fine, it works.
Extract it and then place 'wef_________.ttf' into '/usr/share/fonts/default/TTF. Again restart Pwidgets and you should see the icon. Unfortunately the font is shareware, so not free, so we can't distribute it, but you can download it from them!
PS: Don't edit some of the settings I have mentioned earlier in this thread, they are for the other font!

open Abiword and choose 'weather' (the old Pwidgets weather font, you must rename it and install it from previous Pwidgets) and open abiword again and choose 'NowTheWeather' and type the alphabet in each. Compare and edit Sintot's code. I gotta go to work now but I'll try it this afternoon.

ttuuxxx,
I think that is exactly what we are looking for. Zigbert want ed to create a font for weather and add some doggy cartoons in the one font, especially for puppy. Throw it up mate!
Thanks
Mick

Off the top of my head, I can think of three such issues. And I'm sure that the community can come up with others. |
Ok, now is the time and this is the place. I'm putting together the second alpha of Puppy 4.2 and I already have a list of 19 items to "fix" or add. Another 2 or 3 is neither here nor there, depending upon what's involved.
Cheers

With the show desktop icon I made 2 of them 1 with brown edges, and one with the MS style blue edges which one do you like better? |
On that background, the brown one.
I've had a look at the theme for Macpup-4.1.2 and I really like the striped black look of the taskbar. I wonder if prit1 would mind us "borrowing" that bit?

Hey WhoDo the Xchat package I made-up and you have locally, There's one thing you have to do with it, You need to make it the default chat client, If you want to me to do just say say and I'll repackage it and post it, Because on 4.2 Ayttm is default on the desktop.

I'll ask, I'm sure he's would be ok with it, It took forever to figure that effect. I must of spent 3-4Hrs on it, but was well worth it when it was finished.

Clearlooks will go in for the next alpha. We'll see after that.
