Puppy 4.2 Alpha2-Firepup Bugs & Fixes

#1 Post by WhoDo »

I have just uploaded the second alpha for Puppy 4.2 Deepthought, this time with Firepup/Sylpheed instead of Seamonkey suite. Although I am very happy with its current state, it remains an alpha requiring even more diligent testing and bug chasing than Alpha 1. The remaining bugs are the more recalcitrant ones.

Known issues:

1. Bareview is "broken" since I removed Seamonkey, despite putting all the requisite dependencies back. It segfaults when run from the CLI.
2. Unless I've patched the JWM theme switcher incorrectly, Hairywill's fix for the disappearing taskbar when changing themes needs work.
3. Pwidgets are still rough around the edges - the clock fix is kludgy and the updated func script supplied brought down the Pwidgets manager so I rolled it back out.
4. I haven't included the latest CUPS - didn't get time - so please install in Alpha2 from the dotpet and test till it breaks ... or not. Hopefully "not".
5. The desktop icon themes are a hotch-potch of mis-named icons, some of which swap out and some of which don't. The included themes need to be standardised, not only within each theme but also across the themes for seamless switching.
6. Pweather font encroaches on weather text in night-time characters.
7. grub-gfxboot is installed but not configured. I'd be interested to hear whether it works or not when run from the grub install script on the menu.
8. The slideshow version of gpicview was left out for size considerations. The standard gpicview is 144kb expanded while the slideshow version is just under 2Mb. Maybe ttuuxxx or Hairywill can take a machete to the code and see what we get.
9. Flash chess was also dropped for this release - around 1Mb saved. If there is room in the next release it will go back because it is so polished an application it would create a great impression for puppy.

On the positive side, I have rolled back to xdg 0.7.6-4 to resolve issues with fixmenus and the xdg templates. New applications include PETget (420), Pmusic (0.5.3), Pfilesearch (1.11), Pfind (4.6), Pmetatagger (2.1), Puppybasic (2.6), Pwidgets (0.4), Pwireless (0.8.3), Roxrightclicks (0.8.2), Xpad (2.14), Firepup-0.43, Sylpheed-2.60, Xarchiver-0.5.2, grub-gfxboot-0.9.7, MU's patched Gxine-0.5.903, newman-1.0 (man pages viewer) and some interesting game choices (Seahaven, TkHearts, TkYahtzee, Xfreecell, Jester, Xcheckers and Xsoldier-1.4) Xarchiver has proved a tad buggy in testing so now is the time for further testing and improvement.

Browser hasn't yet been updated to ttuuxxx's new, compact Seamonkey-1.1.14 as development is still ongoing. It will be in the next release.

Coolpup has also submitted an updated version of ntfs-3g that I accidentally overlooked. That too will be included in the next release. Sorry coolpup. Just an oversight, nothing more. :oops:

2. http://www.pkagfiles.net/puppy-test/
3. http://www.puppylinux.ca/puppyfiles/test/

If the mirrors don't show the Alpha2 it's probably because I was still uploading it when I posted this notification. Give the admins time to move the files to the download area and try again later.

This release is just over 100Mb, so there is some paring down to be done, too. As before, if you don't see this boot screen on first boot then you've got the wrong download! :P

Enjoy!

With the Pweather font, the size I made the font is the issue. I had no idea what I was doing but managed to produce a font from jebaJQ8's svg's.

if you edit the 'Weather' config file you can improve the situation. (line 52)

Code: Select all

TEXT
${color0}${font pweather:size=64}${execi 10 /root/.pwidgets/scripts/WeatherIcon "OCN|AU|QLD|GOLD+COAST"}${font}  ${execi 10  /root/.pwidgets/scripts/Weather city}
${color1}${execi 10  /root/.pwidgets/scripts/Weather text}
Change 'size=64' to 'size=36' and save.

Code: Select all

TEXT
${color0}${font pweather:size=36}${execi 10 /root/.pwidgets/scripts/WeatherIcon "OCN|AU|QLD|GOLD+COAST"}${font}  ${execi 10  /root/.pwidgets/scripts/Weather city}
${color1}${execi 10  /root/.pwidgets/scripts/Weather text}
Restart Pwidgets by hitting 'Apply'.

I think you may have tried to include the entire gpicview source tar in the build. I've just looked at the tar and there is a stripped binary in the top level of it. I have just attached a gzipped binary to the gpicview_slideshow as well. Assuming there are no reported problems I will create a pet and a NLS pet in time for the next release.

Hola all,

OK puppylinux.ca is ready for downloading the new alpha2.iso

http://puppylinux.ca/puppyfiles/test/pu ... irepup.iso
http://puppylinux.ca/puppyfiles/test/pu ... up.md5.txt

The server seemed slow this morning...let me know if there are any problems.

The md5sum is correct.

Best,

Updated the cups, Link above, Basically now it should work out of the box without killing or restarting anything. I think its better that way so, if the printer/cups stops responding new users can just click menu/System/Manage Printing and in the background it will kill cups and restart it and then launch the normal browser view.

so just install the package and click
menu/System/Manage Printing

and you should be up and running in seconds :) with the new look and feel of cups, Link above

Live-CD not recognised as bootable

#11 Post by Terryphi »

I have just finished downloading the alpha2 iso. It was painfully slow and must have taken over 2 hours!
Checksum is OK but I tried 2 burns and the CD is not recognised as bootable. Anyone else had this problem?

As the Flash Chess goes, Its not a free application, you need to get their permission and usually they charge fees.
http://www.media-division.com/games.html
I also found that flash game being hosted some place else and when I downloaded it, it was only 79kb extracted. I don't know why it was 1MB?
anyways you might want to ask them about Linux and if its ok to use the flash chess game.

I have downloaded again, this time from puppyisos.org and will see how I get on.

Edit later: No, still same problem. I think I'll give up on this build.

This is possible, although it shouldn't be the case. I ran out of CD's to do a test burn with and the iso was created with Isomaster rather than the createpuppy script in Unleashed which is currently broken.

Use Isomaster in your current Puppy to extract the contents of the iso and check the syslinux.cfg file to ensure that pmedia=cd is set correctly. Then reburn as a bootable LiveCD or simply use the vmlinuz, initrd.gz and pup_420.sfs files to create a frugal install in your existing partition.

Remember, this is an alpha and intended for testing - not daily use.

I hope that helps.

Yes, there were source files in the build when unpacked to my Unleashed tree. I must admit that I was so pressed I didn't go looking for a working binary - my bad, sorry. :oops: I'll revisit for the next release. The size looks much better now it's been isolated. Thanks, mate.

When I downloaded it I was pretty sure it said free for non-commercial use. I think we qualify. :wink:

That said, I will go looking again just to be on the safe side. Can you upload the smaller version so I can include it if allowed? Thanks, Jeff.
