PUPITUP Music Lab v:1.2 (Netbook friendly)

Posted: Thu 29 Jan 2009, 20:25
by eztuxer
I'm happy and proud to announce the release of my own version of Pupitup Linux as a portable Music Lab based on Puppy 4.1.2
Happy owner of an Acer Aspire One (AAO) netbook, I needed some fast & efficient OS that would support the new kind of hardware this "mini laptop" is fitted with. (Wifi, Webcam, internal mic, etc...).
After much tweaking, and lots of help from the Puppy Users Community, I'm glad to release at last: "pupitup v:1.1".
It runs on a 512 MB (or larger) USB stick, or the live CD, and can be installed on HDD as well.
The live CD .iso file can be downloaded for free at:
http://pupitup.org/
Feel free to mirror !

Hope this will help promoting affordable music composing and editing, and provide AAO users with a neat alternative to the OS included as standard on the AAO, as well as expanding furthermore the use of Puppy.

:D Sounds like fun and I might try after failing to get
songsmith
http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/um/ ... songsmith/
working on Windows 7

and no sound recording working on Puppy :(

Does it have a drum machine?

Pupitup doesn't have yet a dedicated drum synth machine like HYDROGEN, but If you are willing to learn how to use AMUC :

Also LMMS has a Beat/Base line editor :

That's a bit easier to learn.

You can also add many soundfounts to MUSE SCORE including percussions.

Next pupitup release will have more music soft like HYDROGEN, GNUITAR, ROSEGARDEN, ARDOUR, etc... etc...

Feel free to make .pets out of the sources. ;)

By the way, if someone could mirror the pupitup .iso at an easier hosting, cause the one I found ask to register in order to dwnld. :(

DOWNLOADING MUSIC LAB WORKS WELL

If found out that downing is very simple:

"Select" the file, then "rightclick" AND download.

This is what ytou find out when you are somebody who hits here and there, most of the time not knowing what I am doing, but this time it worked., even if I ended up registering for a real free account.

But even that isn't necessary.

Downloadlink works as long as you do not get confused by the message "Browser not supported" but instead hit the button "continue anyway" etc.

Questions: (1) What software does this release have for importing and exporting MIDI files, editing scores, and printing them? (2) How big is the pup_412.sfs main file?

Hi !

(1) ===> see http://pupitup.org/software.html

Amuc can Import/export in .mid format
Amuc has built in help manual.

Musescore handles .mid & .xml music files that can be created/played back via midi instrument or PC.
Muse score also has built in manual, but link is corrupted, so it can be found online here: http://www.musescore.org/

or via the links page: http://pupitup.org/links.html

(2) =

.iso file is 264 MB, installed on USB takes +/- 330MB

I have trouble connecting to your site.
Having tried a few times already, I had to post the problem.
Am I the only one having trouble? Is there any alternative way to download your puppy?

I would appreciate if anyone answer for this downloading problem.

Hi,
congratulations !
I had like to try pupitup, but I have also difficulties to download on 110mb.com. I could also have been missing something...

On 110mb and on humyo as well , I have been asked to sign up as if I ask for creating an hosting place. I do not need being hosted.
Is there a way to download pupitup without signing up?

Many thank for answering!
Charlie

Thank you for reporting problem with the website.
This hosting service worked really fine since www.pupitup.110mb.com was created on 12/18/2008.
The admins are stating they had a disk space full problem on Box 16 which hosted my site:

You are on Box 16 which is affected by the full HDD. When you went to edit your files, their space was taken up by something else. There was no room to save them so they got stored as "empty" files. Once the HDD gets cleared up, you can reupload the "empty" files from the back up copy on your computer. CP is intermittently working and not working because it relies on MySQL. When the HDD is full it can't write information to the MySQL database. Ergo, it won't log people in.

They are stating that there is now 20 GB free space on that server.
I'll try to upload it again but might have to "recreate" the account.
At least, I used "composer" to make the site, so I have all the files on my HDD. 8)

This kind of "poor maintenance" problems seem that happen more often now (I had some bugs on www.easyphpbb.com the las 2 months after 3 years of 99.9 % uptime) with free hosting services.
I think this is related to deteriorating global economics, (some like www.8tt.com have just gone out off business) and it might get worse in the future. :(

As for:

http://www.humyo.com/8928341-336006277

You have to register to dwnld, which I didn't know before hand, but it only takes a couple of minutes, and they haven't flooded my mailbox at all, all they sent was registration confirmation and password, and I think the service they offer is fair.
Anyhow, you can just use a disposable mailbox.
I'll upload this file on another free host ASAP.
Alex QM96 kindly offered to mirror the .iso, but his site is not UP yet:

Hi ! Chris,
Are you running it from the live CD or did you install it ?
In any case, using the mouse/keyboard wizard (menu->setup->mouse/keyboard wizard) should enable you to use other keyboard setting than latin.be .
What PC are you running it on ?

Update; somehow, my keyboard selection "belgium" got remastered in the process although I chosed the"do not customise" option.
Worse, I found out that in spite of changing it with the wizard, and /etc/keymap showed "us" after change, even restarting X or the PC didn't change a thing and it kept coming on "be latin1"... I had the same issue but the other way around with the first version of "Aspire One Puppy" :
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=35424
That's why I chosed to go for 4.1.2 instead.
Make sure you don't have an old puppy save2.sf file left on some drive when installing from CD.
The new version .iso works fine on both my AAO & old Presario laptop.

Okee dookee, here's a link to a host that doesn't require registration:

http://www.2shared.com/fadmin/4784213/c ... py-412.iso

This is a "new" version, with keyboard selection bug fix: version 1_2

Also http://pupitup.110mb.com/ is UP & running again (they fixed it) and I updated the dwnld link :)

Thanks Bill, I opened an account there, it looks fine, but while trying to upload, I got this warning:
Please note: The size limit is 100 MB per file
So meanwhile the old iso. should work, just delete the /etc/keymap file after the USB install, reboot, and not finding an /etc/keymap file at the next boot puppy should start the wizard (mouse, kbd, Xorg) and all should work fine from there on.
That's how I got around the "qwerty" locked config in The first Aspire One Puppy version.
In the mean time, I'm back to uploading the new .iso at:
http://www.humyo.com/

Thank you Dingo.
I'll mirror it there, and maybe somewhere else to have more sources, in case of rush demand for this puplet ;)

I'll re upload it at www.2shared.com, too since they kindly answered my mail.
Hello,
Normally, we delete files if they have not been downloaded for 30days. The message you got means that the files are no longer available
for download. Please try to re-upload the files.
Best regards,
Just got it on:

http://www.humyo.com/F/8928341-336476285
(don't use this old file).

This one requires registration, but at least the files remain there.
