Puppy Documentation - LatestNews?

#1 Post by Lobster »

What is happening?

puppylinux.org is just a message board. Or did I miss something? Where is Puppians documentation? Why does the puppy linux.org not point to the wiki or to Barrys website pupweb.org or to the goosee site or at least to something a bit more representative whilst content is created . . . or am I missing something?

This what I understand:

Developers site
http://pupweb.org

Index wiki
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/

Index with message board
http://www.puppylinux.org/home/

Index with template
http://puppylinux.org/docs/pre/?Puppy_L ... on_Project

Now I know people are working very hard on pet (so to speak) projects :) For example I got a PM from Puppian on adding documentation - but I am already doing that on the wiki - and that is my limit

And many people are adding great info to the wiki
eg.
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/LatestNews

What is this? When do I get my website?
http://puppylinux.org/members/me/

But I for one am totally confused. What is happening?

I really appreciate that work is being done in testing and so on but we seem to have had bare bones for a while now . . .

Am I just impatient?

woof woof

Well I must be impatient as well. I think that some people are working
very hard on great projects.
But at the same time we need more documentation. So this is a call from me: If you have ever asked a question or recieved help from the the forum or wikka or from self-knowledge. Will you give in return and help the documentation tree expand ?
Lobster maybe some examples of how to help out or pitch-in might give those who want to help a way of knowing how to.
Heaven is on the way, until then let's get the truth out!

Define a beginning structure that reflects the contents of the startup and shutdown files... and the 'registry' (sorry :P) of applications in Puppy.

Build the PLDP as a (sub-)wiki and (I think) the server/wiki software should include some stats on how people navigate the wiki. Provide the links between often visited pages (emulate the paths that people follow) and let the search work... and define some meaningful names of wiki pages.

We need to cater for the 'find an answer quickly' and the 'step-by-step' -types of audience... and we really need to use the Plain Language approach to ensure newbies are not put-off. Lots of small, tightly-focused pages that are in a sensible structure, are fast to load and find.. and page names that are useful/good signposts when shown in a list of pages from a search.

More later...

I'm on another forum where they tried to start a wiki; it was very unsatisfactory until the pages and directory got quite full of manual level info. Many people rejected posting in the wiki because they liked the 'reward' of reply posts in the threads- even if what they were posting could have been copied directly into the wiki.

What puzzles me is that there is no direct link yet to the wiki directory from this forum. It should be there right under the Home Page goosee link. When ready, the Doc Project should be there too.

Also, if there was a thread where forum 'posts that belong in the wiki' could be copied, it might engage people who aren't ready for wikiwork. For example, here's a Tip&Trick from GuestToo (it'll be lost in a day or so...):

i usually make a Bookmark to the Puppy Help file
file:///usr/share/doc/index.html
(it's easier to use the Help files with a full browser, for example, the browser's search facilities and tabbed windows)

Questions

#6 Post by raffy »

If you haven't noticed yet, our master index is at pupweb.org.

puppylinux.org is the foundation's index, and its initial pages are being tested up to Nov 25, when the final announcement will be made as to how members can use those pages - that means you will get your (members) site soon after Nov 25.

You can use the members page for uploading images, that, in turn, you can use for the wiki. At your option, you can write HTML pages there, too. Right now you can test these things there

http://puppylinux.org/members/me/

The links that you are trying to find are at the top links of puppylinux.org.

If you haven't noticed yet, there was a long discussion about the CMS - pls check on it, i guess under "Puppy Power". The Wiki was also discussed there. (I've just been through a long discussion on that, and am doing a "promotion week - a national exhibit" here currently, so pls spare me up to Nov 25. Meantime, the puppylinux.org pages get tested...)

puppylinux.org is supposed to invite action - we'll see some soon, i hope.

Cheers!

EDIT: Let's not forget that Lobster has prepared an excellent intro/presentation for Puppy newbies - this is in the top links.

The master index is quite difficult to read.

I think that all the different sites, although on different servers should have a common "webmaster" with a similar look and feel.

This is quite difficult for me to propose because I'm not contributing to any of the sites.

I haven't even had the time to provide feedback to puppian.

(I don't know if I've psted something similar before, it sudenly felt as dejavu).

I also have web development and UI design experience (since the early 90's) Is there any way I can help?

I think that creating a template using M4 macros or something similar would be very usefull to speedup development and keep up a standard look and feel that can be modified consistently across websites.

I've seen (used) M4 macros used successfully even on large customer-facing corporate web sites.

It's easy to use and individual web developers do not need to understand it, you just need to learn it if you are creating the template.

Template

#8 Post by raffy »

Thanks, rarsa. You can in fact propose a template defining some css elements like

title
menu
maintext
sideboxtext
feedbacktext

and position these elements

{SITE_TITLE}
{PAGE_TITLE}
{MENU}
{CONTENT}

{EDIT} - for authoring only

The colors will be defined in the page design and css.

These are the few required items. Just add any that you like. Thanks.

web look and feel

I like the common look and feel idea, I have ideas but lack the structure to pull it together. I would like to explore the idea for M4 on my puppy support sites.
I think that would be a great idea. TD

Actually M4 is so pervasive that even our little puppy has it on the LiveCD.

The Puppy Linux Documentation Project forum is now open for business. Only (logged in) PLDP Usergroup members can see the PLDP forum.

Not much docs have been added as I'm busy sending and replying pms  (same pm to different docs committee members...as we don't have the 'carbon copy' function), but thanks Flash I won't need to do it so often anymore :D

Oops, I sould have gone to see puppians pages before adding my comments.

It looks quite clean.

I actually spent the evening creating a proposal for using m4 macros. It seems that puppian has everything under control.

So, I would hate to see my work go to trash, so If for any other project you are interested in using m4 macros, here is what was suppoused to be my proposal. (I withdraw it before putting it forward).

Exactly what I mentioned to Lobster quite some time ago. He told me to contact John Murga (who is the only one who can alter the forum page) which I did.

Still no link in sight.... John????

I propose that what with all the changes with the new websites that we have another Puppy Linux Foundation meeting to discuss the changes happening and upcoming and other ideas/plans to help get things coordinated better. After November 24 is assumed. Otherwise we could just communicate/coordinate more.... Any feedback?
