Xorg won't but Xvesa will...

#1 Post by SteveK »

Hello,

I'm having a problem with Xorg. Although Xvesa works, I'd like to get Xorg running. Details are:

Puppy 4.1.2Retro-k2.6.21.7 seamonkey - Running from USB Stick.
Nvidia 6800GS Card.
Acer P193W LCD Monitor - 1440x900 @60Hz.

Originally running the Xorg Wizard (1440x900 and lower) with TEST I got an "Input not supported" message from the monitor and Ctrl+Alt+Backspace locked everything up with some pretty patterns on the screen. The only way out was a hard reset.

I then tried installing the NVIDIA-964301-k2.6.21.7.pet from here with a slightly different result - The monitor was reported as having no pixel resolution with both horizontal and refresh frequencies also of 0. Tweaking made no difference, and strangely the video card is recognised as a 6600GS not 6800GS. At least there was no lock-up this time and I tried various settings with the same result.

If anyone can help, I'd be grateful.

Steve

http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/L ... dix-a.html

according to that, the 6800 is supported by the 173 driver.
Also by newer drivers:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_disp ... 80.22.html

http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_18897.html
--------------------------------------
If you try the free xorg driver of Puppy, look up in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
It should have driver "nv" or driver "vesa", not driver "nvidia".

Hello Mark,

Thanks for the links. I also thought that my card is supported by this driver (173). I tried the newer driver from your link, but got an error following Nvidia's installation instructions - "unable to find system utility "idconfig"".

As I said before, the built-in driver was worse and I don't have the log from that any longer.

This is the Xorg0.log

it can't load the kernelmodule, as your chip is not supported by the 96 driver.

Without kernelmodule, X refuses to start.
You still had luck - when I run versions not matching my 7050, I just get a black screen, and must reboot with ctrl-alt-del or a hard reset.

ldconfig:
I attach it, extract it to /sbin/.

It is usually included in devx_4xx.sfs.

I first would try the NVIDIA-177.82-k2.6.25.16.pet from:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=34001

If the pet still fails, try to use the installer from nvidia.com:
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
Download it e.g. to /root/.
You also need the devx_412.sfs and the Kernelsource.sfs:
http://puppyisos.org/files/sfs/Puppy-4. ... 16_410.sfs
http://puppyisos.org/files/sfs/Puppy-4. ... fs-md5.txt
(user: puppy, password: linux).
It includes the original Puppy ".config", if I remember well, not the smp version.
So you could use it without changes in a standard Pupppy 4.1x.

Then exit X, and type:
cd /root
chmod 755 NVIDIA-Linux-x86-180.22-pkg1.run
./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-180.22-pkg1.run

If you get an error, that the kernelmodule cannot be compiled, then type:

cd /usr/src/linux
make oldconfig
make modules_prepare

Then run the installer again.

I just see that you use the retro-Puppy:
Current Operating System: Linux puppypc 2.6.21.7 #1 Sat Aug 30 18:33:20 GMT-8 2008 i686
So you need the kernelsource sfs for that kernel of course :
ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributio ... modules-4/

Or the pet:
NVIDIA-100.14.19-k2.6.21.7.pet
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=22272
There seems to be no newer one, but the 6800 should be supported by it.
But kernel 2.6.21.7 in Puppy 3 was compiled different than in Puppy 4x-retro, so the kernelmodule might not load.
You could check that by typing:
modprobe nvidia

If you get an error concerning unresolved symbols, it is incompatible, and you had to use Nvidias current installer to compile a new one.

This anyway would certainly give best results, as it includes a lot of bugfixes.

Hi,

OK I think it's probably best to just try to go ahead with installing the latest Nvidia driver and recompile the kernel.

I have a question though.

I have downloaded devx_412.sfs and kernel-src-2.6.21.7-patched-puppy4.1retro.sfs

What do I do with them?

No, you do not need to recompile the whole kernel.
The nvidia installer needs only the kernel sourcefiles in the sfs.
Like this it can compile the required kernelmodule.
The installer does this automatically.
You place both sfs in /mnt/home/.
Then run from puppys menu the bootmanager.
In it, add them to the list of SFS that shall be loaded at startup.
Then reboot, and use the instructions I posted above to use the nvidia installer.
