keep finding these little gems buried in the threads, hopefully you guys will add ones you find here, for quick or future reference...
Pizzasgood MBR Tip:
Turns out it was just a corrupted master boot record. Popped in the Western Digital Data Lifeguard cd that came with my newer harddrive, booted, fiddled around, found an "update mbr" button, clicked, and POOF! All better.

But keep in mind that will get rid of lilo or grub or any other bootloader things in the mbr. It restores it to "good old windows."

here's this one by Bruce B:
Yesterday, I did some expermenting installing Puppy on a spare HD. The results of which indicate that it doesn't make any difference of you nuke the hd or install on a pre-partitioned HD, which I presume you know this. Except the nuking is as someone wrote, hygenic. But I've seen cases where nuking the drive is the only thing that gets it working right again.
If the HD is partioned you can delete the partitions by booting Puppy CD and using cfdisk or fdisk to delete the partitions.
Suppose we start off with a drive that has either been nuked or the partitions deleted with Linux fdisk or cfdisk. The basic procedure is insert the Puppy CD and boot the computer.
Puppy won't install the pup001 file on this type of drive because there are no partitions.

... how to change what the Puppy Menu's Text is. You go to root, and in the context menu's Display section select Show Hidden. Then you open the file .jwmrc and edit the 6th line. It looks like this:
<RootMenu label="Whatever" icon="mini-dog.xpm">
Whatever is the label. Replace it with whatever you want, but if it's too long, then it won't all show on the button.
