Now that's really WEIRD because I check back over my Unleashed packages and rootfs-complete directories and what I have there in both places is the actual icon, not a link. Maybe .... I dunno. Just put it back and it will be fixed for the next release. *sheesh* :o
also you didn't use the icewm6 I posted on page one of alpha4 you used icewm5 from alpha3. Icewm6 I did last night, it has the reduced right and left hand taskbar icons, plus I made all the themes look="flat" and re-enabled -show desktop, added back ttuuxxxView which was missing, the link was always on the rightclick of freememory applet, but the little script didn't find its way into the icewm release, it was used in my older larger release and when freememory was reused ttuuxxxView was left behind, by accident.
anyways I re-uploaded it to page 1 of this thread.

I'd love to but it needs serious pruning first. As I said in the 'Known Issues' I had to leave it out because it contains 3Mb of documentation alone. Who knows what else could be pared from the package to get it down to the size of 3.29 (or less) :?:
it is, the size of the 3.20 with the updated snapshot pet packages is 261.12 KB pet or like 551kb installed, its just about the same size, try it out its on page 1 of this thread and try the snapshot feature. just do the fixmenus/ restart jw/icewm and you'll see it.

The Stardust gtk-theme is still the old one. You'll find it on the 'Stardust recourses' page.

5.)
The Icon_switcher does not keep the unique menu icons when changing icon theme. It auto-generates 24x24 icons out of the 48x48 icon theme. Like this it overwrites existing menu icons. I guess Barry made this to save space (the 24x24 icons didn't have to be in the iso).
Warren has to make a choice if he will support unique menu icons.
Under consideration. All icon themes will need to comply to a standard specification and that has yet to be developed. Barry made the switcher capable of handling SVG icons that were manipulated to create the 48x48 and 24x24 standard icons for the desktop and menus. Subsequent themes have used PNG, JPG, XPM and SVG. That will all have to be resolved before the final release. Any takers?

That is by design. It waits for the user intervention or a timeout (I think) before disappearing but only appears on first run before a pup_save.2fs file is created.

The gxine doesn't work when streaming internet radios.
Implementation in 4.2 is MU's modified gxine that resolves some playback issues. The version in 4.1.2 was problematic. We are looking at Alsaplayer+Streamtuner to overcome the issue of streaming radio.

Curious. I'm pretty sure I mentioned that I hadn't included this one back in the Alpha4 thread. I got it too late to add to the Beta1 release but I've downloaded it and I'm testing it in my pre-beta2/rc1 test bed. It will be in but the number of themes will be pruned back for space considerations. Odelite will stay but the others will be left out of the standard release. I'd like to include BRdelite too, but I don't think I'll have the room. I have included Elberg-blue because I wanted users to have an option of 1xdark and 1xlight theme. If you wanted to try and trim that down it would be helpful. Maybe you'll get it small enough that I can include BRdelite original with the flat title bar and bubble buttons as a third option.

WhoDo delete that Mtpaint package you just downloaded and grab the latest and final version, this one has the following improvements over the first package
It becomes 'defaultimageviewer'
Included are the default icons that puppy uses 2mini and 1pixmaps
added the mimes also so you can't go wrong :)

On another note WhoDo I seriously would consider scrapping the Icon-theme-selector and fixmenus script. This version is starting to act like a alpha. this is why
I replaced the missing rox mini icon, I compiled/installed the new mtpaint and looked at the other themes and the rox icon is disappeared again. Back to the link again, like the image earlier.
Also the 'shutdown menu was up' but now its reverted back to old look without the 'shutdown menu'
And it had a printer Icon in the menu, and now thats gone.
Really we are moving files in place where they never were, Things are breaking like pmount, Things are disappearing from menus, like the icons, or they aren't switching right. Its just over complicating things, I thing this crazy mess should go. Without a working drive mounting program makes this release a alpha, you can call it beta, but not by definition.
I've made icewm packages as you know including icons, that changed 90% of the menu icons by default, I've made firefox packages, that became default browsers and changed the desktop 'browser' icon, perfect 100% of the time. never failed once.
My advice is either package each of the icon sets up into pet packages. have them sit in a folder along with a cropped snapshot, for a viewer to pickup. like /user/share/iconssets
Then make a modified puppy package manager, that installs them without notice and displays the accompanying image of what it will look like.
It must have to do with the way the puppy manager installs things, because it just works for changing icons. No issues no problems.
We are getting way late into the game, to have serious issues thats cripples mounting of hard drives on a regular basis, i don't mind adding the Icon once, but every time I install somethings, I have to include that icon or my sata2 does work. thats not on.
Seriously we are Alpha 5 codename Beta1, lets replace it, or toss it. Tough call but its your ball park, bases are loaded and your up to bat.

One last rant before I'm done  -ing
The old change you desktop icon switcher worked in 4.0.
Issues started happening with system links, menu files etc, to change menu icons and taskbar icons.
I would Toss the menu, taskbar icons
I would revert back to the old fixmenus script and desktop icon changer from series 4.0
I would Keep the Desktop icons only and have a nice day :)
simple. Then I would say to who ever wants these things in place, make it work, remaster puppy, give me a testing iso that you can abuse, ex install/uninstall programs fixmenus, change wm/ change themes/ etc. use it for like a week. If it passes ask for the package and if doesn't It just wasn't ment to be.
If you want to go back to the old system, I could
package up the deskyop switcher from 4.0 series, strip out the mini icons, add the older fixmenus script. add the usr/share/applications/.desktop file
addselect the best of zigberts minicons and use them a default icon set for the taskbar and menus. etc
then end result would be
1 complete mini-icon theme for menu/taskbar that doesn't change via desktop icon chooser.
maybe 4 or 5 desktop only icon themes, and all the issues go away.

Is this not just a matter of going into /etc/cups/cupsd.conf and modifying all the lines that specify authentication?

PUPPY 4.2 BETA NOTES

Still no printing for me. I set up my printer (Brother HL-5140 monochrome laser, HL-1240 driver) just as I did in Puppy 4.1.1, where printing works. With TextMaker 2002, I got an error message saying "lpr: Error - no default destination available." I looked in CUPS for how to set my printer as the default destination--no luck! With WISH Supernotepad, which also invokes lpr, nothing happened. With AbiWord, my printer was shown, but the status was "paused" although CUPS said it was "Idle." No luck. With SeaMonkey, the printer was correctly shown as "CUPS/Brother HL5140"--but nothing happened. I looked in /var/spool/cups and no jobs were shown. Back to the drawing board again!

Tcl 8.5.6 "clock" bug (apparently resulting from excessive zeal in cutting Tcl package down) not fixed; the "clock" command still doesn't work, and apps that invoke it still won't run. But, on the bright side, I installed my tcl- and tk-8.5.5-runtime .PETs with no problem; then "clock" worked and apps ran.

No thunderbolts, I trust, have struck you down from on high for daring to produce a Puppy of slightly more than 100 MB total size. I would strongly suggest that you bite the approximately 2-MB bullet and put in Tcl/Tk with just about everything except demos and man pages. That way everything will be sure to work, and it will still be only about half as big as the 4-MB bullet you were previously thinking of biting. :D

IceWM taskbar still too cluttered. The "Shutdown" menu item should be changed to "Shutdown/Restart," and all sub-menu options should appear when the mouse is over the item, just as they do for "Desktop," "System," and all the other main menu items. New users are likely to be confused and even dismayed if they install packages and are told they have to restart the window manager to see a new menu item, but it isn't at all obvious how they're supposed to restart the window manager. "Shutdown" sounds pretty scary and not very relevant to merely restarting a window manager. Worse yet, after clicking Shutdown, and then the Advanced tab, I don't find "Restart IceWM" anywhere among the options! This is a change for the worse from 4.1.x, and really needs to be fixed.

A few great IceWM themes should be added. I suggest at least QuanX, ShineySingle, GoldenMood, Xtreme-Animated.

Thanks for trashing the Emacs GTK+ theme; the Raleigh theme is also ugly and not needed.

Please don't have xpad come up automatically.

By the way . . . you said you were going to get me the 4.2 versions of packages.txt and 0pkgs_db before the first beta. How about before the second beta, then? Like, um, maybe right about now? :D

Hi david could you please try the above tcl/tk patch, It fixes the high scores error/problem in yahtzee, I was wondering how much of the errors does it fix:) hopefully all and save the full package space. But if not I was thinking, would it cause any problems if I edited /root/ztcltk/tcl8.5.6-i386/usr/lib/tcl8.5/tzdata
and removed most of countries ?)
Same with most of the files in /root/ztcltk/tcl8.5.6-i386/usr/lib/tcl8.5/encoding
could maybe be editited.
As Icewm goes WhoDo missed the latest package and I haven't tested yet the printing to see if anything is still missing or needed.
Thanks for your help

mtPaint compilation

#43 Post by wjaguar »

People, if you want the smallest - and fastest - mtPaint binary, pass the "release" option to ./configure when compiling it.

This disables debug code GTK+ would otherwise add, and enables handpicked optimizations (depending on GCC version) which are guaranteed to have a positive effect.

Just another boring zigbert-comment about adding alsaplayer+gstreamer.

Yet another proposal to add new apps to the iso instead of
- improving already existing bytes.
- find something better that may replace the original.

Alsaplayer is a very nice audioplayer, - no doubt. Like said here before, it both streams and plays audio-CD (gxine does also play audio-CD). But when you want to manage a large music collection, Alsaplayer fails.

What Gxine doesn't do is streaming (well, not in Pupy 4.2, but it streams partly in Puppy 4.12). Gxine also misses features to manage the large collection. That's why Pmusic was created. - To fill a gap in Puppy. If we had a player that pleased us, we could trash both Pmusic and Gxine. Ending up with 3 players doesn't sound as the best solution for me.

Back to my point. Puppy supports streaming. Open a terminal and execute the following line:

Code: Select all

ffmpeg -i "http://rockfun24.de:9001" -f au - | aplay
Last summer I made Pradio, which used this ffmpeg code-format. This is either a plugin to Pmusic or a standalone program. It has been on my wait-list since, waiting for a better ffmpeg package. Since ffmpeg also is capable to record desktop (video snapshot), I thought this had to come.

Image

This could have been the time to attack the tcl/tk in Puppy 4.2, since the argumentation would have been similar. But I'll leave it. - Irritated opponents would soon leave me totally alone on this forum. But, I think it was a longterm strategic choice of Barry to skip tcl/tk before Puppy 4.

Hi Sigmund where Pradio fails, is that it doesn't support Shoutcast Plugins, or Xiph plugins. you have to manually add your stations, and somewhat know what your doing, where as Streamtuner thats included in the Alsaplayer package does do and very well at that, It has thousands of stations at you figure tips, updated everytime you start the player up, If a station is closed, and the link is removed, it will no longer be listed, thats another feature that Pradio doesn't have, Pradio is good if you have a handful of personal stations you like to listen to and manage, you can also do that with streamtuner also:)
But it is nowhere near the shear mass as streamtuner.
I did not say to get rid of Pmusic either, But I do think that Pmusic has a way to go like to play cd's Gxine if you been reading takes around 15% of a cpu and for that reason is terrible for listening to cd's, or online audio streams, It will kill laptop batteries quickly if used for that.
Plus it plays online streams very smooth, and cd's also, Streamtuner+Alsa package is very sweet deal, Plus Pmusic no offense does not shut off, Unless you use process, And right now PMusic is buggy, when its opened my mouse is dragging all over the place, I shut pmusic down and its still doing it, I Open Pprocess and Kill pmusic and my mouse is perfect. whats up with that, i have 11gigs of memory left and 98% of my cpu left, run PMusic and its like I have 0% left.

Oh ya, have you really tried the package I made sigmund??
I've made Streamtuner a default library ./root/My-Music in there you just make all the directories you like and streamtuner has a local tab, if you click on that it will play each song that you select, kind of not the best way, butttttttttt if Alsaplayer does have a excellent playlist editor m3u , You can add as many song as you like, how I do it is in My-Music, I make all different folders for different music , Rock, ALternative,Celtic,Wife,Kids etc then I make a m3u playlist for each with Alsaplayer then I simply open Alsaplayer select the playlist.m3u for which folder I want and then I have choice with Alsaplayer either shuffle or playlist loop and sit back and enjoy :)

this is what the local folder on streamtuner looks like, Like I said alsa is better for list, but live radio streams linux has nothing as light and equipped as Streamtuner for thousands of updated by the minute online streams . And Alsaplayer playlist can work in the folder very well.
Maybe download the package and try it :) both packages combined in one pet is 466kb. The previous released streamtuner was 601kb pet and didn't look as good as this one:) plus the last alsaplayer 375kb, my version is 1/2 that size and plays way better streams due to alsaplayes low cpu usage against Gxine the cpu hungry monster  One plays streams smooth and the other is choppy,

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... h&id=14958
Alsaplayer still needs the mime's but I'll add them tomorrow , Also with AlsaPlayer you can make as many m3u list or import them as you like.

Sigmund
Oh by the way it isn't gstreamer its streamtuner :) 2 different things completely :)

Now Sigmund what we could use, is a replacement for Gxine, YOur the man who could do it, probably pretty easy once I explain it also.
Tonight I played a DVD with VLC media player. So what you say eh?
well lets have a look at it, First I took my 7.8MB pet and ripped out the wxgtk libs, then I ripped out the GUI. Packaged it and it was a 3.2MB power pet package. No modules, drivers removed 100% workable vlc via command line.
Then I went to
http://www.videolan.org/doc/play-howto/en/ch04.html where they have alot of the command lines.
So I installed the pet and typed in a command line
./vlc /mnt/sr0
and there it was a dvd playing, it was a bit gittery because I didn't load any modules, which you can with vlc command line, but think about it, a gtk interface with a drag and drop section and find file selector. play pause and yes fullscreen
vlc --fullscreen /mnt/sr0
Anyways with your know how, you could take pmusic add 'pep' Puppy Entertainment Player, <---I like the name better than say PMultimedia player.
Well Its an Idea anyways here's the VLC commandline version.
http://www.puppylinux.asia/tpp/ttuuxxx/ ... ndline.pet
If you do it that would be great, If not maybe another year from now I might know enough code to pull something like that off.

ps below is a screenshot of vlc commandline version playing via rxvt and no gui. :)

Preliminary Testing Results

#47 Post by ecomoney »

Ive been doing some testing of this version. of the main problems I came across is with gxine. Double clicking on an mp3 now automatically opens gxine, but each time it opens it re-runs the setup wizards.

Full screen flash video now works. The new the seamonkey is excellent, especially now it features the standard shortcut keys and Ttuxxx's new more conventional button layout. However the flash version is still at 9.0.48.0 which is now very old and will not work with many popular video websites. I thought I saw somewhere on the spec that version 10 would be used? From my tests this seems to be a lot faster on older hardware, crashes a lot less and will be compatible with most websites for a lot longer.

The "chat" feature that links into the puppy help chatroom is an excellent idea. However "chat" to most end-users weve encounted means Instant Messaging, of the yahoo or msn variety. Perhaps it should be renamed "Support" or "Live Support".

Instant messaging is a very important function of a modern computer system to an end-user, and puppy 4.2ce does not seem to have an inbuilt application for it any more. I have suggested before that the menu entry for /usr/local/bin/meeboview be re-introduced. This is a simple web-based messenger service that connects to msn, yahoo, jabber etc, and even now facebook chat. It also means that if any of the protocols change (as MSN has a habit of doing) then the meebo website will respond automatically, wheras an inbuilt application wil not.

the "gdmin/rsync" utility program (which I assume is for doing backups) seems to crash upon entering the name of a new backup.

On a more aesthetic level, the shortcut icon for the gnumeric application looks like a calculator, and is labelled "calc", its not obvious that its a spreadsheet application. There is also still a shortcut arrow on the "install" desktop shortcut. On the top launch bar also seems to be missing some icons.

I notice this is the first "beta" of 4.2 . Im kicking myself that I didint ask for a very small feature that will make a huge difference to puppies useability. Many people have mentioned that puppy's file structure in very alien to new linux users. the /root folder contains many links to various important folders. If it were to also to contain a symlink in a frugal install (by far the most common type) to the "outside world", i.e. the host disk that the pup_save.2fs file was on, it would make it a lot easier for the first time puppy use to find their treasured files and folders already on their computer. This link would also be visible automatically in the various applications save dialogs. The alternative is the end user hunting aout for the /initrd/mnt/dev save, /mnt/home, /initrd/mnt/dev_ro2 or wherever this most important location ends up being accessible from in the overall filestructure.

Many thanks to everyone for their work so far on this project, I am very much looking forward to seeing the end result.

Sorry if it's a bit slow....we are working on it.

I am on the Canary Islands for the moment and had indeed, just now a slow speed. But in ibiblio I had a blasting 450Kbps speed. Never saw that before. Was I lucky?

If you insist--but trash Gxine first, OK? I like Pmusic! Easy to play music, easy to save and read playlists, no bloat, and just all-around easy to use.
I think it was a longterm strategic choice of Barry to skip tcl/tk before Puppy 4.
The longer-term the choice was, the more out of date it now is. :D It may have made some sense to dump Tcl/Tk, I guess, back when you couldn't very well combine the ease of Tcl/Tk scripting with the good looks of GTK+--but now you can. Not only can you get real, instant GTK+ 2.0 widgets with Gnocl, you can also come up with Tk 8.5 themes that look a whole lot like, say, the Clearlooks GTK2 themes. The next step in reconciling Tk and GTK2, I think, will be to come up with some Clearlooks themes that can fully match the splendid array of color schemes you can easily get with Tk 8.5.

It fixes the "clock" bug! That's great! Thanks!! You can now merge it with the existing Tcl 8.5.6 .PET that went into Beta1 and submit the revised package for Beta2, right?
Would it cause any problems if I edited /root/ztcltk/tcl8.5.6-i386/usr/lib/tcl8.5/tzdata
and removed most of countries?)
Same with most of the files in /root/ztcltk/tcl8.5.6-i386/usr/lib/tcl8.5/encoding
could maybe be edit[e]d.
It would depend on whether anyone needed to use those encodings, or the data for those countries. It would probably be possible (if necessary) to cut out that stuff and put it into an auxiliary package for Puppy Unleashed, in case anyone did need to use them. But maybe it won't be necessary--at least, all of my Tcl/Tk apps will now run on Puppy 4.2 without my fairly fat 8.5.5-runtime .PETs, or your slightly fatter 8.5.6 ones, installed!
As Icewm goes WhoDo missed the latest package and I haven't tested yet the printing to see if anything is still missing or needed.
Well, I have, and something is. I still can't print, and I can't even set my printer as the default printer (see above, page 3). If there's anything you can do about it, thanks again and again in advance!
