by typing rxvt in a terminal you can open a terminal window
and somewhere there is a posting on how to run rxvt with options.

I can get green but I can not seem to activate a font - I want a big one.
(so to speak)

Any ideas?

Without using a command argument, "Xfontsel font viewer" at Menu>Desktop will give you the options available for Rxvt in /root/.Xdefaults, the biggest is limited to 24 "-pxlsz" or 240 "-ptSz".

The format is like this, just add or paste this line to .Xdefaults for one of the largest:

Rxvt*font:-*-courier-bold-r-*-*-*-240-*-*-*-*-*-*

You can also limit the size of the window with this example:

Rxvt*geometry:45x20

Play with the numbers (width x height).

Registering a dissenting opinion: I think rxvt is a great terminal emulator for people who never use a terminal emulator :)

Thanks guys - this is what I have so far based on your advice?
Code:
#rxvt -geometry 768x640 -fg green -fn 10x20

I hear courier is the biggest font
Is this the max font size possible with the default fonts?
(may add larger fonts later)

Lobster my friend,

In Linux there are many ways to do things.

Rxvt is not a good emulator. Go ahead and load the MP editor and play with the home and end keys.

I use Mrxvt and I'm swell with it.

Two files of the same name mrxvt

One is in /root/bin and the other in /root/my-applications/bin

PATH gives /root/bin first serve

Full path to the binary is imperative to prevent running in a loop

Here is the script in /root/bin
Code:

#!/bin/bash
/root/my-applications/bin/mrxvt -fn 10x20 "$@" &

Many preferences are set in /root/.mrxvtrc, so the code can be very short

Attached is a preview using geometry of 80x25 and font 10x20

What do you think?

Lobster,

Consider Big_Bass may have a better terminal emulator. I can't say because I've not used it.

But sincerely my command prompt avatar is not a joke. I'm a serious command line user and rxvt would drive me to tears, yet I'm fine with mrxvt.

Happy to give you tips, help, files and pointers.

Bruce

Embarassed

OK here is my cunning plan
(well not much of a plan or that cunning) Rolling Eyes

create a terminal that takes up the whole screen (for this I need to get rid of the sides of any 'box')

Being big it should (in my brain) seem simpler
Yes I am willing to use terminal commands
Confused It has finally happened 'full penguination' Crying or Very sad

The picture I posted was intended to be in part an example of font. The actual image is compressed badly. I thought at over 600 pix wide it wouldn't display at all.

Here is take two with -fn 10x20

EDIT: Even take two doesn't display right. Someone must have changed phpBB management of pix.

The real think renders excellent font, neither as in first pic or the second.

Ok, I've installed sakura, and it's much nicer than rxvt, thanks.
It's relatively easy to change the "console" icon to run sakura.
But how to I change rox-filer's right-click->"Window"->"Terminal Here" menu to run sakura instead of rxvt?
