WhoDo asked - re Xvesa in rc2

Xvesa works on old Compaq Armada M700 and E500
and on mature Fujitsu Lifebook 2200

But Xorg works on all, so I don't know if it helps much to confirm Xvesa (ie if Xorg works, I assume that would be the choice, and Xvesa would be expected to work QED?)

otherwise everything totally calm and bright, no worries and

It has full language support, I'll try stripping it out later after I compile the plugins, also enchant is included, It uses Ispell for the dictionary,
just install it overtop your current one and it should work fine.

Ran XVesa on an old Dell Latitude laptop and an old custom built and rebuilt and rebuilt desktop. Everything was fine except on the laptop at certain resolutions the background didn't quite fill the entire screen. There was a gray strip about the width of an icon at the top of the screen. The gray area was perfectly functional except for the missing background.

as abiword Plugin's go does anyone know what extra plugins we need, by default this is the list without any extra libs, Should I compile the extras ? if so which ones, look like there is a few. I just worried about space, I don't mind compiling them, just would like to know what most users want?

Hey ttuuxxx,

I came in late on the Shutdown menu dispute. I'm not sure what it's all about. I hope what I'm saying here doesn't make you mad.

It's a relatively minor thing, but I think it would be worth fixing if fixing it is easy.

After I begin the shutdown of a multisession DVD, it is not possible to return to the desktop. Once I tell Puppy to shut down, if everything doesn't go right within the DVD drive the only alternative is to turn off the computer, losing everything I wanted to save.

I have to say that Puppy improved so rapidly from the beginning that no such loss has happened to me in years. Still, it would be a comfort to know that I could change my mind and go back to the desktop at any stage before Puppy actually attempts to save to the DVD -- or even after, if Puppy realizes that the attempt to save was unsuccessful.

Is that the sort of thing that would be within purview of the shutdown menu?

Thanks for the test, jabu2. It's unlikely that Xvesa would not display if Xorg does, but it could happen that Xvesa shows some quirk or other like the one that prompted my request - continually rebooting into itself when shutdown is selected. Wierd stuff, I'll grant, but you can't be too careful. Thanks again for taking the time and the trouble to check.

Thanks, hillside. I'm guessing the "gray strip" was probably a problem with the old Dell Latitude's onboard graphics not being fully compatible with the new Xvesa driver at some resolutions and refresh rates. I'd say that's nothing to worry about at this point. Thanks for taking the time and the trouble to test. It is much appreciated.

All I know is that Puppy 4.2 currently has aiksaurus-1.2.1 and enchant-1.3.0-1 in its build. The dependency checker in Unleashed keeps pointing out the missing liblink-grammar dependency, but the current version seems to run ok.

I don't know if other programs require those packages, but it may help you to know they're there and work out what to do. After all, if you compile in the later versions I may be able to get rid of both ... or not?

Abiword-2.6.3 is 7756kb uncompressed. Add to that the English dictionary at 2472kb and plug-ins at 2220kb and it is quite a hefty slice of our available space. Here is the list of plug-ins for the current version:

The point is that it's a matter of differing opinion as to whether it requires "fixing" at all, Flash. Zigbert is a fan of the minimalist approach. ttuuxxx likes a bit more colour. The middle road is probably the best but on this occasion I specifically asked ttuuxxx to produce the same shutdown dialog for JWM as he produced for Icewm. That said, and despite his very plausible arguments against Zigbert's criticism of too much "bloat", I do think ttuuxxx overreacted to what was really only a difference of opinion however hurtful he perceived that opinion to be.

That is part of the reason for the shutdown dialog. It contains a cancel option to let you change your mind if you suddenly decide to save something manually first. The underlying problem is of more concern to me. We have adopted a "fix" suggested by MU to comment out a "killall X -9" command at the end of the shutdown script, which should ensure that situation doesn't arise. The command was a hangover from Puppy 1.7 I believe.

Hi, is there still room for straightforward changes?
I haven't got any of the RC's, but I noticed in 4.1.x there is no program set to open .docbook files (which Abiword can open fine).
For that matter, does anyone know if there has been any fixing of file associations generally? Puppy has recently had all sorts of silly things, like clicking on code files tries to open vi or something... And a bunch of really common filetypes don't even have their mime types set up.
File associations have needed a good tidy up for a while, but it is hard to do anything unless the relevant parts of Puppy are in some sort of proper repository

Hey WhoDo you know one aspect I don't like about the shutdown, Is that when you go to shutdown, and the window manager exits, and you get a prompt screen about saving the files or not, It also would be nice to have a exit to prompt or a return to the current window manager, You should be able to have a choice. Kind of like Flash said but different, If I knew where that dialog is and the name of it, I could alter it.

So I changed the lines 467 and 468 in the en.mo and fr.mo files, but I also changed the lines 1631 to 1664 in the /usr/sbin/petget localized file.

You find 'em, I'll fix 'em.

Best advice is to download RC2 and go hunting. I know that coolpup is beavering away in the background looking for incongruities and wasted space, but ATM no-one is specifically checking for obvious mime-type problems. I just went through and adjusted all the graphics mime-types to open with gpicview by default. That should work ok because RoxRightClicks gives the option to edit in mtPaint, etc.

All advice gratefully accepted, disciple. Now that RC3 is all but ready to upload - I'm only waiting for pa_mcclamrock's Remaster Express package - there is some time to do the cleanup and polish. I'm also taking suggestions on the desktop icons visible at boot, and where they are as well as what they're called.

Does that mean I can drop the existing enchant package? That's 116kb so the net increase would only be 54kb if that's possible.

Maybe this is the clue, ttuuxxx?

That's a script called poweroff in /sbin and it looks from that as though /etc/rc.d/rc.shutdown is the script you might be looking for.

I'm also taking suggestions on the desktop icons visible at boot, and where they are as well as what they're called.

The original set (colour) and their positions work well.
With Stardust and Deep Thought, quick identifying does not as easily
allow for choice by colour. Though of course they are very stylish as is the black-grey icon set
I noticed the original set were gone from rc2

Would it surprise you to know that Deep Thought (the icon set, nothing else) and JQ8FlatLite will also be gone from RC3?

I'm replacing Deep Thought with l'Orange for RC3. It causes fewer problems for the desktop icon switcher. The others will all be in the repository for a quick install, but they need too much fiddly work to make them compliant with the icon switcher and I don't have the time left for that. Find me about 350kb of space and you can have "Original" back too, ok?

I opened it - added an image - right clicked on and it crashes - had to use Open Office - so hope new compile works
