Is this a clean install or are you trying to update with an existing pup_save.2fs file?
It is an update - that could well be the problem. 8)

The other day the forum was unavailable for several hours.
Because of that and as we move into rc3
and to allow real time chat I have set up a Deep Thought Chat room

WhoDo spell checking works in my version you just have to enable it :)
/Edit/Preferences/Spell Checking and tick 'check spelling as you type'
then try it, works fine :)

BTDT, ttuuxxx. No joy. Even downloading a new dictionary and installing makes no difference. Appropriate preferences are selected but spell check icon on toolbar remains inoperative and spell as you go doesn't. All of my tests are on a brand new RC version with no pup_save file to be sure there are no cross-contaminations. I even went back and rebuilt Abiword with the old spell checker added. Nada.

Its working fine on my system, did you install the version I compiled and added the other addon package?
I can give you a screenshot

If you don't rush to rc3 I'll have it working out of the box :) Like below

Abiword

Booted rc2, from the CD, changed preferences for "check spelling as you type..."

Works....

Personally should be the default, my opinion, as a notorious bad speller.

SeaMonkey has spell checking for quite some time now.
Works out of the box in rc2.
I can load other language modules when needed.
(For my purpose, Dutch, French and German)
Time savers:
Find packages in a snap and install using Puppy Package Manager (Menu).

Testing 4.2 RC2 on EeePC901 from a USB stick

#232 Post by mawebb88 »

Good
Gxine browser plugin from a link in Seamonkey works fine

There is a show desktop icon just to the right of the "menu/Puppy 4.2" button in both jwm and icewm

Less good

Clicking on a playlist (on my Samba LAN disk) at /mnt/network/MAPOWER-NAS/Music_mp3/Abba/Arrival/playlist.m3u opens Alsaplayer but nothing happens with "no stream" indicated in the players title bar.

Using "Open with" from Rox, gxine also does not work on my playlist (see screen shot attachment)

My playlist looks like:

When I Kissed The Teacher.mp3
Dancing Queen.mp3

etc .i.e. no path in the m3u file (as I play these from more than computer and OS)

So I installed bmp-0.9.7.1.pet as I use this in 4.1.2 and this still works fine with 4.2RC2 with my same playlist with no paths on my Samba LAN disk. Maybe something still could be optimised with gxine's mimes?

As a side line the final dialogue on on the bmp-0.9.7.1.pet installation looks like this!

See screen shot attachment

It looks to me like it reports its in multiple JWM submenus although its actually only under Multimedia.

Oh no! Just noticed the Eee's fan is not working (wondered why my lap was getting hot). CPU temperature has shot up to 66C. So will have to abandon testing.unfortunately. Pity I was just getting going. Guess I need all those pets from tempestuous 's thread "Extra drivers for Puppy 4.1 with 2.6.25.16 kernel"

pwidgets & ptray

#233 Post by playdayz »

On my p3 900 MHz 256MB thinkpad t22, the pwidgets program makes the Puppy 4.2 desktop significantly less responsive. and the responsive desktop is the thing I have always loved about Puppy. Am I right that it is entirely deactivated with no processes left running by Menu -> Desktop -> pwidgets and removing all 4 items?

I would also like to cleanly remove ptray. I had some trouble and I think I had to restart the X server to get it to go away. What is the procedure for deactivating it cleanly with no processes left running. Will the option Hide tray in Menu -> Desktop -> ptray utility bar do that or does that leave something running? Is there a distinct process that is responsible for ptray?

Another reason for removing the pwidgets is that only the pwidgets wallpaper looks good with the widgets running; with any other wallpaper the widgets all have a gray rectangular background around them. Is that right???

thanks.

It would be really nice if someone can modify Pmount or MUT to allow for read-only mounting of partitions.
It's very useful for safe mounting of NTFS or UDF partitions/media where you don't want to modify anything.

Hey WhoDo I have the Abiword Plugins compiled, What a mess of packages, Goffice still doesn't show up for some odd reason, never the less it doesn't matter, I used the goffice-dev from the repo, which by the way is useless because the dev's are cutback way too much, so I went to compile the latest and well thats no good either because it now uses gio as a dependence, plus 3 other packages that are outdate on puppy, it would of really bloated up, so then I downloaded the same version as puppy and compiled that one, Which compiled fine but still didn't find it, but anyways I managed to trim it down somewhat so that a bonus, around 200k expanded but every bit counts :)
Anyways I needed libBoost to compile the plugins, wow what a big set of libraries that is. 81MB expanded, I haven't compressed it yet, did you want it for the repo? If so I'll upload it, took about 30mins to compile. Its handy for the packagers. I didn't bother with jam.
Ok now for the goodstuff :)
I managed to strip the plugins and now the abiword plugins is 715kb pet. 2832kb expanded and now when you open abiword and select plugins it doesn't crash. caugh caugh like I figure:) lol
I'll upload in a bit once I figure out everything. But overall it should be a good savings in size :) compared to using goffice 7.0, plus added libs etc. Plus stabler and with the added extra bonus of OpenXml
ttuuxxx

Update
made it smaller now 715kb, I could of saved another 32kb by deleting the glade xsl stuff, like Barry has in the past, but I think its needed.
could lead to making it unstable? anyone have a clue on it?

thanks.
1. Remove show_widgets from /root/startup to turn off pwidgets
2. Update your wallpaper setter - link in main post of pwidgets thread (I forget the link)
3. DO NOT SAY "remove", if you want to remove it from your system, please do. Your opinion is NOT always the SAME with others..Ok?

Oh, excuse me, I must have mistakenly thought this thread was devoted to feedback on Puppy 4.2 rc2.

I'm kind of with you on that one Playdayz, I would like to see pwidgets as a addon pet package, maybe included with a puppy pin icon link to the desktop, so you click the link it opens a pet , install conky, fixmenus, pwidgets, etc. and if a user don't want all that stuff installed they could delete the pet and be done with it all. I never liked any system monitor, conky etc, it was nice for about 5 minutes but after that I didn't have any use for it, I never look at the desktop, and to have so many extra things running in the background, making tons of extra links, man I would be happy with 4.12 with the 2 Window managers, new icon themes, and thats it as bling goes, actually It wouldn't bug me if JWM took a one way ride out the door also

And don't tell me it can't be done as pet, I was the first to make the devx compiler as a pet, for like puppy series 3,4, if you can make that as a pet and it works then you can do that with anything.

Naaaaa I'm not starting anything, just that I've been reading Pwidgets reviews by users and talking to them in chat, and well I would say its a 50/50 for people who want it and people who don't, we are talking about system resources, space, slowing down of things, not everyone wants that for a little desktop bling. I can't see why we couldn't have a regular desktop with the option of installing all that other stuff, really all you would have to do is take a clean 4.12 and install all your apps and utitilies , make notes while doing it, make a pet, give WhoDo a icon and he can puppypin it, one click on the desktop starts the pet install, and 1 min later you have bling :) probably a good place for the pet would be just in root.
simple. What you guys have done is really nice, no doubt. but people running say a 233mmx probably would never want it. I have a fast PC with lots of extra resources and I find it slows down, compiling and basic moving of window around, I've noticed that 4.2 be not as agile as earlier 4 series. How about a poll Bling or no Bling poll?

Here are a few possible space savers

to remove - not really useful???
/usr/lib/seamonkey-1.1.14/res/samples ... 347kb
/usr/lib/seamonkey-1.1.14/res/throbber ... 23kb
/usr/man ... 16kb
/usr/local/man ... 6kb
/usr/lib/syslinux/syslinux.exe ... 24kb
/usr/lib/syslinux/syslinux.com ... 20kb
/usr/lib/syslinux/isolinux-debug.bin ...13kb

these could go to devx_420.sfs ????
/usr/lib/*.a and *.la ...589kb
/usr/lib/alsa-lib/smixer/*.la ... 3kb
/usr/lib/apr-util-1/*.a and *.la ... 38kb
/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/engines ... 3kb
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/gxineplugin.la ... 1kb
/usr/lib/pkgconfig ... 7kb
/usr/lib/xchat/plugins/perl.la ... 1kb
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/input/sample_drv.a ... 5kb
/usr/include ... 33kb

Also save 204kb with symlinks from icons in /usr/local/lib/X11/themes/DeepThought to /usr/local/lib/X11/pixmaps

there are a lot of duplicated icons all over the place - too many to list - no time to track them all down right now, but that should be around 1MB for ttuuxxx to play with anyways
