How to use Internet Explorer in Lucid 511?

#1 Post by Jbsteiner »

Hi,

I'm a puppy newby, and i love it. I'm using lucid puppy 5.1.1, so far everything works for me except 2 things.

I need internet explorer 7 or 8. Is this possible? I can't get it working under Wine. The reason i need this is because i use IE to access a trading account through java using a certificate, which i am unsuccessful in importing using any of the other browsers.

Any suggestions?

thanx

Which instructions have you followed? What errors do you get?
This probably isn't the best place to ask about it as I don't think we really have any Wine specialists :)
Are you sure you can't use IE6 or even 5?
which i am unsuccessful in importing using any of the other browsers.
Is your java working for other sites?
Do you know a good gtkdialog program? Please post a link here

Yes my java is working for other sites. I've tried installing using winetricks, i've also tried manually installing it myself through wine. The install looks as if it went ok, but then when i try to start IE it freezes or locks up. I haven't even thought about trying IE 5 or 6, I will try these and get back to you.

Thanks for the reply, i wasn't expecting anybody to help. :))

Ok,

here is an update....

when i try to install ie6 it says "this version is incompatible with your os". I am able to install IE7 and IE8 through wine, however when i run either one of these there are no menu options, i'm looking for the tools menu so that i can import my certificate, and i'm unable to access that menu.

thanx

The script automates the installation of IE under linux. Ive used it on Ubuntu in a commercial environment to interface with a parts ordering system, with good results.

Thanks ecomoney! Our monitoring server uses an activeX control, now I can monitor our business remotely now without having to boot to Windows.

Another possibility is to use Crossover. It is a commercial product but you can download a trial. If I needed to run MS Office prior to 2010 or IE 6 or 7, this is the way I would do it.

Ha-ha, I just checked and it is OVERPRICED for 19.00 today--it is their 15th birthday!

In case anyone doesn't know, Codeweavers supports wine and they feed many of their tweaks and discoveries back into wine.

SeaMonkey permits spoofing. So it presents itself as IE f.e.
I don't know if it is in preferences, by editing the config or with an extension.

The IE I installed in Wine was IE5 (through winetricks)

Find packages in a snap and install using Puppy Package Manager (Menu).

You can also use Opera.

STEP 1. Enter site

STEP 2. Go to Menu > Settings > Quick Preferences > Edit Site Preferences

STEP 3. Click on the 'Network' tab

STEP 4. In 'Browser Identification', choose 'Mask as Internet Explorer' and click 'OK'

STEP 5. Reload site

This way you won't need Wine.

Cheers :D

NOTE: This setting is applied to individual websites. For example, if you apply the mask-as-IE or mask-as-Firefox setting to murga-linux.com, only this site will be shown through the 'mask' for compatibility, while all other sites will be shown through Opera as usual. If you want another site to be shown through the IE mask, you have to enter that site and repeat the steps above.
