Hi pizzagood earlier on you posted some comments of editing sfs files, So I edited the pup_420.sfs, when I use Iso Master to edit puppy-4.2-k2.6.25.16-seamonkey.iso and replace the pup_420.sfs with the updated one I get a mismatch error, any Ideas how to change the sfs files and rebuild the bootable iso image?

WhoDo wrote:[ . . . ] please post this to the Puppy 4.2 Patches & Updates thread in the Bugs forum so it doesn't get overlooked.
Thanks for mentioning that thread, where I just saw a report of an easy-to-fix bug in Remaster Express! (Apparently the bug only becomes noticeable when the PUPSTATE file doesn't set a PUP_LAYER variable, and I missed it because mine does.) EDITED: Here's the fixed edition, which also incorporates the warning to users about using a lot of RAM that I proposed on page 27 of this thread. Please substitute this .PET for the original in Puppy 4.2 Final!

any Ideas how to change the sfs files and rebuild the bootable iso image?
For the record, I usually mount the .iso, pull the files out into an empty directory (named isolinux-builds/ for this example, but can be arbitrary), make the changes, and then run this (from outside the isolinux-builds/ directory):

Code: Select all

mkisofs -o cd-puppy.iso -b isolinux.bin -c boot.cat -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table ./isolinux-builds/
That's copied directly out of Unleashed, except in Unleashed it's broken in half.

#445 Post by hobbiest_2k3 »

hi

i just run Puppy-4,2DeepThought with swap file, but it does not detect iPhone(i got it for sim-unlocking, after unlocking i try to attach it with latest Puppy-4.2, but not detected as usb)

however, in hardware probe, i can see it on my usb port.

is it a bug ? or do i need some other special .pet installer, if so where can i get it.

Depends. If the iphone is supposed to work like some mp3players, where you plug it in and it is treated as a simple USB drive (as in, it is considered by the OS to be a "mass storage device"), then it should be able to be mounted (there may be a lag before the desktop icons update to show it). If that is how the iphone works, but this is not what happens, then there is probably a bug somewhere.

However, I highly doubt that that's how the iphone works. More likely it uses something more complex to communicate, in which case this is not a bug, just a feature that isn't currently supported. There's probably a linux program out there somewhere that will support it. There might even be software released by Apple themselves (likely closed source but free).

If it uses some proprietary and undisclosed protocol, and if Apple hasn't made any moves to provide at least a closed-source method to utilize it in Linux, then you should complain to Apple. It would be pretty stupid for them to support their biggest competitor, but not their ally (well, I consider us allies still). It isn't like it would be hard for them. Internally, they are much more similar to us than Windows.

gtkpod is a Linux application to access the contens of an iPod/iPhone ...
but you first need to "jailbreak" an iPhone to remove its software restrictions.
gtkpod dotpet, plus jailbreak details here -

thanks 4 ur answer, but i am not complaining, i just wished to share my experience with latest puppy. as in previous puppy,i used many phones like Motolora-P2K Series, LG, even some nokia phones( but not all worked), all of these phones uses USB cable, and detected as usb mass storage device.

I know you were not complaining. I meant that if Apple goes out of their way to make things difficult, then you should complain to them.

If there is a jail to be broken on a device, I tend to question whether the device is worth using in the first place, and whether the company behind it is worth giving any respect at all.

I don't take kindly to limits that other people attempt to place on me.

Thus why I use neither Microsoft nor Apple products. Apple is better than MS, but they're still rotten.
