Pfind is another one - extremely buggy. There's less than 50% chance that it will start or complete a search. It will crash, hang or won't terminate when closed.
We need a better (reliable) search application for Puppy.

Pmusic and the media player do not work but get woof woof from alsa configuration.

Did you try Barry's spup (SlackPup)? I find that one even faster than dpup.

Hi Barry,
I've been playing with woof since day one and love the scripts. I think that I sent you a message a loooooong time ago about a concept system, and woof is very close. I think if I could isolate you and a few choice others, I might be able to help you skip a few steps to the top.
I don't want a mocking forum comments on the subject so i will pm if you are interested in some fresh thoughts on the OS in general.

I am very excited as you are amidst the development of pieces of my puzzle too. As it stands now I have built from woof for every version. i found that slack build had a few errors reguarding the hack install script(glibc, and a few others). Many of my comments in private should address issues you are working on(from the scripting changes i have been looking over).

I also have been learning more about the guts of puppy over the last few years. I have been chewing on the puppy scripts for a while, and really have been waiting for some time to address my more serious endeavor with you. I see that you are about fresh ideas. Are you ready for radical? Something that turns the Distro and moreover OS realm upside down? I'm doing this for a lot of reasons. Myself, My friends, My fellow GNU/Linux users, etc. I will do it alone, but i would be most honored if i could bring a few true blue heads and hearts on this voyage.

After your response(if you are interested) i will PM you with a list of others i know would help bring this idea to fruition with the quality and character it deserves. I promise you that this concept is worth the time, and will change your current project goals(hopefully to be inline with mine). Thanks Barry

Well, I'm always open to new ideas. Certainly if you fix any bugs in Woof I'm very interested. As far as working with a team, I'm at a phase in life where I'm less interested -- just want to play with ideas and develop them on my own. But of course, feed me a new idea and it may influence what I do. This often happens, someone suggests something, then suddenly they find I've done it, perhaps a year later.

Hey Barry feel free to extract the throbber I made for Seamonkey in 4.2 Final, and reuse it if you like in your future projects :) I think it was actually a bit smaller also.

None of my network connections work in woof alpha 3

Maybe I'm a moron, no check that I am a moron when it comes to linux but they have worked in past versions of Puppy and or Linux.

I have b 43 wireless and 2 different ethernet cards, one PCMCIA and one integrated into my compaq presario r4012us.

None of them even 'light up' so it appears the interfaces aren't being enabled/raised.

Just wanted to give you a heads up (although I'm sure this has already been brought to your attention) and say thanks for all your hard work.

I tried dpup 014, but my second HDD (externally connected via a e-sata connector) isn't seen.

upup hower sees it.
I noticed a differenc in kernel versin, upup being higher (2.6.69.rc7)
Could that be the problem and if yest are there plans to change the kernel of dpup.

Here's The latest Geany compiled on Dpup
I made it default text editor also.
when you compile on Dpup the new2dir make install doesn't work, So I just used a earlier Geany as a template for the files.

new2dir, yes, it's the 'installwatch' application used by new2dir that is actually broken.

I'm going to recompile it in upup today and test it.

I read something interesting at ubuntu packages thats related to all Pups version,
"Automake 1.10 fails to work in a number of situations that Automake 1.4, 1.6, 1.7, 1.8 and 1.9 did, so has been renamed so that the previous version can continue to be made available."
http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/automake

I was looking at ubuntu's latest version numbers to make sure I compiled the latest one, well being such a low issue number 1.10 and autoconfig is like 2.60.
Thats kind of bad that automake 1.10 has issues because some applications in the past have asked for updated version on series 4+.

ok I tried to compile xine-lib-1.1.16.2 and I had some make issues, so I compiled the last release of gnu make http://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/make/make-3.81.tar.gz and it went a lot further :) It didn't compile complete, but I don't think it was a compiler issue. More like a xine-lib at fault

Hi Barry

I did notice something after getting the new2dir script working, It didn't include the themes/skins directory in mplayer, gxine, bmp so its working around 80%.
Still haven't managed to properly compile Gxine or Mplayer, but did manager to compile ffmpeg. We do need a working mediaplayer For Dpup, sure BMP is excellent for audio/streams, but Gxine, mplayer from the 4 series repo doesn't work on Dpup.

Well Barry I took your advice and used a different coreutils but still only half of the package is being made with new2dir script, Pidgin is also another great test for the new2dir script, it only packages maybe half of pidgin, It leftout the themes, icons, emotions, usr/lib/pidgin folder, usr/share/applications and a few others. But the nice thing is when you compile Pidgin for once you don't need a whole lot of extra libs to use msn&yahoo messenger clients, the package is around 2.3MB pet in size with all the libs&bin stripped, I didn't remove/stripdown any of the images, but I will later once I test the package. I used to have to compile a few extra packages to get the messenger clients working or disable a lot of the configure script to get pidgin to compile in a basic forum, now its only 3 things I had to disable, very nice, people are really going to like dpup when we get it to beta stage.
Would be nice to have a full working compiler  but I guess in all do time :)

woof alpha 3 dpup

#61 Post by elraven »

I've been trying dpup , loading it into ram, using a save file. The issue i have ( i hate asking by the way) is this. It finds my sound card and loads a driver for just fine. It plays just fine too , but.... When i log out and shut down it saves or says it is saving. When i boot back up later i find i have to go through the whole process of configuring sound , tweaking the mixer and such , each and every time. I guess i hate asking this because i don't like bothering people . There has been alot of good developement with dpup ,as well as with others. This problem has me to such a state that i'm starting to blame it on evil tree gnomes . I'm even eyeing the owl that lives in a near by tree . Any way i hope someone can help me figure this out.

best regards

If I recall rightly, the settings are saved in /etc/asound.state, which is read at startup. A starting point would be to see if that file is getting updated when changes are made. I think it gets updated in the /etc/rc.d/rc.shutdown script at shutdown, so you should have the new settings at next bootup.

Well , i'm at a complete loss . Having looked at asound.state , pupstate, and the shutdown files. It seems sound conf isn't reaching the shutdown and save parts . Alas , i even tried the new upup 461 ,and it is doing the same thing. right now ,i'm in 4.2 no bling and it runs just fine ,sound and all . It would seem i've lost favor with the computer spirits or something.

Woo hoo ! yeah baby !
Hi Barry ,guys :D
my sound problem is solved ! The trouble was in the /etc/rc.d / rc.shutdown file. The asound.state file wasn't mentioned there. To solve it , i added the asound.state file to the variables loaded part of the shutdown file (at the top) . I then saved it and rebooted . I couldn't have done it without your help Barry . Thank you , thank you , thank you !!!!
