Puppy 4.2 "Deep Thought" - Bugs & Fixes Subject description: ... renamed 30 March 2009 to better reflect content |
|
I had intended to use this thread for Patches and Updates to the official 4.2 release, but there have been so many posts that are more about Bugs (however minor to me, obviously important to the posters) that I've decided to rename the thread. I will create new thread for Official Patches and Updates to Puppy 4.2 "Deep Thought".

point me in the direction of the discussion that decided to opt for flashplayer 9 over flashplayer10. have lost the link to the version of flashplayer9 that has secutity concerns so cant tell if 4.2 is a concern

In JWM, I have ShareInternet 2.0 (only 1.4 on repo) running and normally I get 2 blinkys for the 2 interfaces. Now I have half a blank blinky... Worked ok in RC4 with old blinky.

I think that was in the RC3 Bugs & Fixes thread, but I could be wrong. Puppy 4.2 contains Flashplayer 9.0.152, which is the latest version of the 9.x series of Flashplayer. Series 10 was out of the question as an inclusion based on size, but I'm pretty sure I put it in the official repo so you should be able to install from the PETget package manager.
Hope that helps

Dear all,
Important updates 4.2 final:
1. bcm43xx module problem
In 4.2 Final..bcm43xx is still being a problem...for those of you who wants a workaround..just edit /etc/rc.d/MODULESCONFIG (line 33) delete the red word
PREFLIST=' rt2500usb:rt73usb ath5k:ath_pci orinoco_nortel:hostap_plx orinoco_plx:hostap_plx orinoco_tmd:hostap_plx orinoco_pci:hostap_pci bcm43xx:wl b43:wl b43legacy:wl ssb:wl prism54:p54pci r8169:r8101 rtl8187:r8187 '
and reboot, make pup_save file when prompted, when puppy is booted again go to network wizard and bcm43xx won't be loaded
2. JWM's blinky & freememapplet
a. blinky will not follow theme for background when theme changes
b. the freememapplet still shows only part of what it supposed to show
so I made up a fix for any jwm users who wants it
EDIT: BACK TO OLDER BLINKY -- NEW BLINKY GIVES PROBLEM (as reported by Micko & Panzerpuppy)
Please update again!
Cheers

HomeBank 4.0.2 Subject description: "OFX support disabled" |
|
Puppy 4.2 looks nice
You guys did a terrific job !
I am very happy to see that you updated HomeBank to 4.0.2.
I am having a problem importing .qfx (Quicken) type files, it spits out an error: "OFX support disabled"
I know this works in Fedora, is there something I can do to enable it ?
Or is that a compile time option ?
Thanks,
Richard.

Can't mount CIFS share |
|
Puppy 4.2 cannot mount CIFS share. I reported in RC4 but I was way too late - WhoDo already cut the Final by the time my report went in.
1. mount -t cifs will fail because mount.cifs doesn't exist
2. mount -t smbfs will fail because mount.smbfs doesn't exist (mount.smbfs needs to be a symlink to /opt/samba/bin/smbmount)
3. Using smbmount directly works for mounting, but for me at least, while I can mount a share I can't do anything on it - for example, directory listing doesn't work.
The solution is to drop a mount.cifs file into /sbin.
I have prepared a dotpet here: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=288811#288811
Note that the source mount.cifs I compiled is version 1.5, dated 2004. It works fine as far as I'm concerned, but it doesn't update /etc/mtab. I tried to compile the latest one in the samba 3.3.2 package and it gives me a segfault.
With this, pnethood works. Always tick the option to "use cifs".
Hope this helps.
Thanks for the 4.2 team who worked hard for this release !

Updated nbtscan |
|
As I mentioned in RC4 thread, I found that pnethood is unstable and I have traced the problem to nbtscan.
Basically it segfaulted on me, and on certain computer it will also flood the packet and kills my NAS.
I have fixed both:
- the segfault happens because of array out of bounds access
- the NAS killing happens because delay between scan is too low.
Original source, patched source, the patch, and the compiled dotpet is available here http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=289209#289209
With this and the above mount.cifs patch, pnethood works perfectly for me.
cheers!

4.2 "Deep Thought" -Retro Mini-9 patch request |
|
NOT REALLY A BUG, but a missing capability:
Would it be possible for someone to create a retro kernel .pet for this wireless driver and post it here or in a repository?
http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php
Tempestuous had created a .pet with this driver for the newer kernel (broadcom-5.10.27.14-k2.6.25.16.pet http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=34159&start=60), but this does not work with the retro versions of Puppy.
A traveling computer without wireless just does not travel well.
-Roy
EDIT: I am, of course, referring to the new puppy-4.2retro-k2.6.21.7-seamonkey distribution. This can certainly wait until more pressing issues are addressed, but I would really appreciate it if someone could put it on their "to do" list for the future.

Puppy needs a quick service release (4.2.1).DeepThought 4.2 feels a bit rushed.
Bugs:
--------
- pnethood is broken, needs a fix
- Blinky and freememapplet are broken.
The patch doesn't help (see screenshots)
Freememapplet fails to show up in the tray.
Screenshot #1: eth0 connected. Looks normal.
Screenshot #2: When I establish a PPPoE connection, the second indicator (ppp0) doesn't show up and blinky turns into 'blanky'.
Screenshot #3: Right click on the blinky icon and select 'options' - ugly stuff
- When taking a screenshot with MtPaint, the process isn't terminated after closing the MtPaint window.
You'll have to end it manually with Pprocess.
- RemaX is still buggy and consumes a lot of memory
- Xonclock is still movable
- GPicView doesn't zoom a small picture to fit it to the window when the 'fit to window' option is enabled. The feature works only when the image is larger than the window.
- ALSA: the libs are updated to 1.0.19,but the mixer and the tools are still the old ones from 1.0.16.
- JWM is not updated
- Lots of unstripped libs / executables

Minor issues:
- Still no line/word wrap active by default in Geany and Leafpad - most users need it.
- Would be nice if Gxine could be set to start in a fixed position like mtPaint, else it will drop partially out of view after viewing a number of videos by mouseclick call, requiring manual drag in place every time.

as Blinky goes, Thats the one from Icewm that always worked fine for it, but there is a JWM version, if someone can find me the JWM version sources I'll updated the images to a newer blinky and all should be fine again
