pcampbell87 wrote:I get the svg error in Puppy 4.1.2. I have checked and the files do exist, I think this may be related to one of the dependencies, librsvg. I used the one included in puppy rather than compiling from source.

The sound issue seems to be gstreamer related and checking this page shows that there is a known bug... unfortunately gcompris development doesn't seem very well documented and I am not sure which bug they are referring to.

Sorry for the errors guys, I am currently recompiling a few dependencies and hopefully it will be working soon.
You might want to build the 8.3 version, it uses sdl & Sdl mixer for the sounds, That works on puppy very well., 8.4 is gstreamer only.

my daughter is happy:)
i will wipe off sidux
maybe only amarok is the last one i need more:)
Don't you speak Russian or something like that?
If so you can get Russian or other language files for it at ubuntu
http://packages.ubuntu.com/intrepid/gcompris-sound
just extract the sound files into the corresponding directories

Of course! I forgot to compile the plugins! I feel a bit stupid now  I am currently making another version with libjasper, librsvg and the gstreamer plugins.

I will seperate the different voices into individual .pet files to make it easy to install extra languages.

Russian Schools all use Linux after a Micro$ofts lawyers decided their Russian schoolteachers were an easier target than Russian Mobsters, who are known for making a lot of money pirating windows.

I hope Britain will go the same way, even though it would kill my free supply of computers!

Perhaps the 8.3 version would be better for now as Ttuxxx suggests. Less libraries means a faster puppy and lower hardware requirements....and more kids and poorer kids can have access to this software! Thank you for your input into this project Ttuxxx its good of you :)

I understand puppy may be going gstreamer by default soon.

It would also be nice to have a British (UK) English version of the .pet files too please. I would hate to see the little darlings learning to speak with an American Accent!

not yet linux is used in russian schools
there were some cases of refusing from windows
but also there's a state programm for turnnig every school into lnux till 2010. There's already a special distribution for schools based on altlinux.
Also MS does not sleep and theydecided to prolong their XP license

is there a pet. for gstreamer needed by gcompris?

Raffy et 'all. i have found a couple of problems, its out there being tested. My sister and her little ones have it (she's a primary teacher), and there is the ursery who are trialing it, i'm going up there tomorrow to see which games the kids like. I'm just trying to gauge which apps to put in to make it as comprehensive as possible and try and get the size down from 219mb!. It was 260.
I have to get the sounds together fro the Lletters flashcard and some more pics. I think i'll just post what i have so far.

Going to build with 8.3 as well, rather just saying either or.

PS I used Gslapt again for Gstreamer and Gstreamer plugin-base from the Slackware 12 repo

edit. I think i keep saying 4.2 barebones (which, as yet, doesnt exist). i'm using 4.1.2. When the 4.2 arrives i will do the same on that.

Still no further forward on the svg issue. I am presuming it is something to do with librsvg.
The librsvg package contains librsvg libraries and tools used to manipulate, convert and view Scalable Vector Graphic (SVG) images.
Does anyone know of a way of testing librsvg to make sure it is actually working?

Hi guys,
I am not familiar with gcompris, what it is supposed to do etc, but just out of curiousity I downloaded the gcompris.sfs and tried it out. Of course I got the "can't load skins/gartoon/boardicons/computer.svg" message. So I went to /usr/share/gcompris/boards/skins/gartoon/boardicons/ and substituted in ././../gartoon/about.png file and renamed it to computer.svg. When I restarted gcompris there it was top left corner and I had another error message about discovery.svg.

A cheap trick but perhaps all the .svg's could be converted to a different file type and their names retained?

Good Luck with this, J

Problem solved! It was so simple I am actually quite annoyed at myself.

The .svg files need to be executable (minimum 744 permissions) and that is all there is to it!

I will repackage it all to include the sound and svg fix and upload tonight (bandwidth caps mean I can only really upload after 0:00 BST/UTC +1).

Grrr.... I packaged it all up and gave it a test only to find out it is not working again despite changing the permissions!

jrb's recommendation of changing the filetype does indeed work so I may have to settle for doing that...

I haven't seen anything posted yet so I went ahead and reworked the .svg images as I suggested above. Everything seems to work in puppy412, except the sound. I played half a dozen of the games, even won a couple. Heres my reworked file:
gcompris_svg_cheat_412.sfs

Hope this helps, J

P.S. I have been using load_sfs to run this but unload_sfs won't unload it. Also when I reboot my wallpaper is gone and most of my jwm menu. If I restart X from the menu it all comes back.
