GnuChess: Xboard and eboard

#63 Post by ljfr »

Just FYI, with GnuChess, both eboard and Xboard are installed, I just let eboard in the menu -personal preference. you can launch Xboard from console and/or and add a desktop entry (/usr/share/applications/...).

Thx ljfr. Took me months to get 8.4.2 up and running using Slackware. I will use the Pets and see if i can get my little project ISO smaller.

I have changed the title of this thread to "[FOR TESTING] Gcompris 8.3.11 Pet or SFS for 4.2 series Beta". I will use this notation from now on.

Please download and test. Particular areas of interest are the chess game and the lights/bulbs/switches/batteries game. Please report all bugs on this thread.

JRB thanks for making this available for Choicepup, please make us aware of any bugs reported there, and we will notify you of any updated packages, and when we have reached release status.

Would someone with hardware experience comment on how much we have lowered the computer specs for access to gcompris?

A great many thanks to everyone, and particularly ljfr.....its some powerful skills you have there :D

The link to servage is dead for me. Let me know where I can download it.

P.S. My daughter loves this on my nokia N800, I think she'll be happy to see it on the puppy desktop.

other link to the sfs fils

#70 Post by ljfr »

Hi TheGogmagog,

Update:
split pet packages of gcompris 8.4.12 and dependencies available at:
http://ljfr2.perso.neuf.fr/pet_packages-4/general/
read the README in this folder for some details.

Obsolete:
I have put the 2 sfs here: http://ljfr.perso.neuf.fr
gcompris-8.4.6-i486-1cf.sfs
gcompris-languages.sfs

I also upload .pet versions ... but quite big files, so maybe .sfs may be more suitable than .pet.

I downloaded the gcompris-8.4.6-i486-1cf-full.pet
but it didn't install right because it was incorrectly renamed
anyone downloading the pet, rename it first from
gcompris-8.4.6-i486-1cf-full.pet
to
gcompris-8.4.6-i486-1cf.pet

Ok after about 20 mins playing with it I managed to crash it, just playing one of the games,it just disapeared, poof it was gone into thin air, also when I installed it, it was missing
These dependencies required by gcompris-8.4.6-i486-1cf package are missing:
File /usr/lib/gstreamer-0.10/libgstesd.so has these missing library files:
libesd.so.0
I think it would be best if you told everybody to run it via the terminal
because when you do that it will tell you
These dependencies required by gcompris-8.4.6-i486-1cf package are missing:
File /usr/lib/gstreamer-0.10/libgstesd.so has these missing library files:
libesd.so.0

also if it crashes while the terminal is running it might tell you where the fault is and will improve the stability of it

Excellent job guys compared to the first time I downloaded and it didn't run at all :)
Your almost there
keep up the great work

Ps if you delete the extra locales and the 26MB python demo in usr/lib folder and a couple of not needed extras it reduces the pet size from 77MB to 65MB
once you guys get it really stable if you want I could give it a look over and reduce the extras and maybe make a couple of packages, like dev's,locales, I could do that.

thanks for the quick feedback

#74 Post by ljfr »

Adding esound-0.2.41-i486.pet solves this dependency problem.
Will test with that and try to make it crash, and reorganize locales ...

thanks for your help, would be great if you could do the fine-tuning once it's fully stable.

Code: Select all

gcompris -a
I installed the pets from the directory you used for the SFS. When i ran the above command from the terminal it gave the error:
ImportError : No module named pysqlite2
The admin console didnt open, just the outline of it. I installed pysqlite 2.4.0 from slackware and it was fine. I have downloaded it and will attempt to turn it into a pet. I'll try the same with Gnucap.

I dont know if this will affect anything else in Gcompris.

Edit: Forgot to mentiona that the admin console can control difficulty levels and remove unrequired boards\games from Gcompris.

Links to Pysqlite and Gnucap. Tested in this version. From slackware 12.

You seem to have singlehandedly achieved in 20 minutes what a week of a preschool of 30 two-year-olds could not! :o

Seriously though, thanks for your time, skills and help Ttuxxxx. Feedback and testing is always appreciated. Which game was it so we can replicate it? :D

Ive updated the link. The "official" version for testing purposes is now at http://ljfr.perso.neuf.fr/. Let me know if you need a mirror...servage have just increased my download bandwidth to 7500gb from 5000gb per month so hopefully no more blackouts for a while. I can make private ftp accounts for people for my webspace too if they would like one (sidders).

updated test version

#77 Post by ljfr »

Hi,

OBSOLETE:
I uploaded a updated version for tests,
http://ljfr.perso.neuf.fr/gcompris280408/

which includes:
- missing dependencies, namely esound 0.2.41 and pysqlite 2.4.0
- updated and split cound / locales sfs partly from the 8.4.12 release.
there is one .sfs (and the equivalent .pet file) including all languages sounds, and one .pet per language in case you only want few of them.
-the main sfs : gcompris-8.4.6-i486-1cf_420.sfs includes english text and sounds.
... and some cosmetic (mutli-lingual .desktop files, ...).

If you use version 4.1.2, the dependency check also asked for the lib Tcl/Tk (requested by _tkinter), I don't know if they are truly needed, you can find them in the Ibiblio ftp.

I still have a minor issue with sounds: when installed on 4.1.2 or with a .pet, with the background music activated, I cannot hear "bleep" sound when I click / choose a game in the main board -with no warning/error on console. But everything works with a sfs in the 4.2, ... weird. So worst case: you may have to desactivated background music. almost no test on the administration board yet.

They are few known bug (melody memory activity), crash cases ... see
gcompris releases notes of latest versions. You could also browse forums / docs to find interesting features : how to change background music, add words in some activities ...

to slim down the sfs, I started a doc sfs, with all games doc and python pygtk demo and some extra modules - to be improved.
I let the dev files in.

regards,

You can remove\hide apps that crash or are too much for the little ones in Gcompris admin console.
gcompris -a

Go to Profiles and add a profile. Within that profile add the 'All users' group. Then make the profile default.

Go to Boards and expand the categories and individual boards and deselect the ones that may cause problems or that you think are too much for your particular age group.
