Nvidia / Puppy that works straight out of the box.

#1 Post by belfasteddie »

For those people with Nvidia cards that cannot get the Nvidia drivers to load. There is a version( may well be more) that has a Nvidia menu that lets you select a driver prior to loading. I just wish someone had posted this before as I spent 10 days of downloading all sorts of variations of Linux and numerous versions of Puppy . Wiped my hard drive and installed numerous times.

Puppy version 4.12 goes by the name of Newyears pup.

In my case when it loaded and because it loads in 800x640 res the Toolbar rolled off the screen. The work around is here.

:Exit X (hit CTRL-ALT-Backspace)

Now type:
xwin starticewm

This starts a different desktop, where the menu is located at bottom (it needs some seconds to pop up the first time).
Start there:
System - System Status and config - Nvidia X settings

I think, there you should be able, to use a different resolution.
Please also zip and attach the file /var/log/Xorg.0.log, if you cannot change the resolution.

Hint:
you also could type to start X:
xwin 1
or
xwin anynonsense
This will show a menu, where you can select other desktops.
It appears with every "invalid" option, that you type after the "xwin" command.

Glad it works :D
Some sidenotes:
NYP has many changes compared to the original Puppy, it is a bit "cutting edge", a playground to test new Kernels and such.

Those who want to use Nvidia in Standard Puppy 4.x:
there are pets here:

There soon also will be a new Puppy 4.1x based puplet with those drivers included.
They then also will have the graficscard selection like Newyearspup.
That puplet will have the same kernel and xorg as Puppy.

I'm in contact with the author, to help to port the menu the way I did it in NYP.
I cannot tell you a release date yet. It will take some days, as more addons like compiz shall be included.
