Help required for KDE project

#1 Post by bombayrockers »

Of late I have been trying to make a light weight dekstop to use for kde. There is nothing smaller than jwm but tray icons are its undoing. I also tried (openbox / oroborus + fbpanel) and icewm. Indiviually they are fast but when all things are amalgamated they work sloppy.

fvwm95 is slightly bigger but more stable than jwm, but here too the system tray icons are a problem. Can some one suggest a system tray dock app / application for fvwm / jwm ??

Also, Puppy - xdg menus are available but how can i get KDE apps to figure out in the menu ??

What do you mean? Do you mean that it does not have an applauncher applet?

I started writing one but found an issue with JWM, Joe advised that he will look into the problem. As soon as he comes back to me with a positive answer I will finish the app launcher.

Leave that with me. I am 99% sure that my xdg-menus dotpup already includes a menu with KDE and puppy entries. Have you tried that?

I'm on my way to work so I won't be able to confirm that until later today (in 10-12 hours)

No not applauncher applet. Take a look at the screen shot. Juk is showing in the taskbar rather than the along with the small speaker beside the clock. Similarly in jwm.
When I click on this juk tab what I get is a big screen with tiny juk icon in the center.
If you have kde installed try klipper or kmix from rxvt in jwm / fvwm. you will know what i am talking about.

Sorry I did not try the latest version of puppy xdg. I will check that out now.

EDIT 2: I have the latest version 0.6.2. Will try again.

EDIT 3: KDE 3.5 has been released so you can hope that a KDE puppy will have 3.5

The first image shows kopete icon flying in the center of my desktop.

The second image shows puppy xdg for fvwm. Not all kde apps show (as it is a work in progress). The entries do not show correctly.

Sorry, I thought you meant to show the kde menu under KDE.

I know how to do it for JWM and the rest, I just did not do it because at that time I thought that people using KDE would use kicker.

Second: What organization should the KDE applications follow? I could create a "KDE" apps submenu and under that have exactly the same menu structure as the Kicker KDE Menu.

If you haven't done it by late today, I will.

Rarsa,

Yes kicker can be used if we can do away with the taskbar. Can that be done in fvwm ?. However kicker uses more memory than whole of fvwm. so its better to stick to jwm / fvwm.

A seperate KDE apps branch can be inserted between application and find. Its is better to keep things segregated.

I have already tries system tray such as docker, kdetrayproxy, wmsystray. None have been successful. With all of them I get flying icons. See screen shots above.

I'm pretty sure it is related to the problem I reported to Joe http://www.joewing.net/board/viewtopic.php?t=100

Xystray is a simple implementation of the freedesktop.org systray specification (a.k.a. notification area) for the X Window system. It is meant for use in simple desktop environments which do not provide such facility by default, such as FVWM. It may also run under GNOME or KDE if the default tray program is disabled.

Bombay, look here:

http://www.murga.org/%7Epuppy/viewtopic.php?t=4208

This is a small C-program.
I run it from a puppybasic-program, rthat moves it to the desired position, and removes the titlebar.

It will not run in Fvwm unfortunately, and in Jwm not perfect.
But maybe you can use it in openbox.

And in Fvwm, you should be able to set up .fvwmrc to force xystray not to use title/borders. That is explained here:
http://www.ee.pw.edu.pl/~stelmacl/xystray/

"fvwm" I have discussed above is fvwm95 available from pupget.

MU,
Would the .fvwmrc settings work in .fvwm95rc ?

also not in fluxbox, but fluxbox has its own tray, that works fine here with klipper and kmix.
I got fluxbox from the dotpup-wiki.
But as fluxbox is based on openbox, you might have similar problems.
It seems to me, it is a bug in your grafics-card Xserver.

for openbox i have a soultion in the form of docker 1.5 and it is fully functional.

http://icculus.org/openbox/2/docker/

I am not too positive about using fbpanel. It uses more memory than Xvesa and openbox. On my box KP process lister shows it uses 11000 memory. where as openbox and Xvesa each use about 7000. A panel which uses more memory than the window manager !

MU can you tell how much memory is comsumed by wxbasic menu ?

Is there an Xlib based panel ?

wxb-menue uses 2084k in gps.
fbpanel uses 11620k.

I don't know a xlib-panel.
I started a taskbar in wxbasic some month ago.

Together with the menue it would be a simple panel.
But I can not tell, when I can finish it.

I'm right compiling fluxbox 0.9.14 with xinerama and imlib2 enabled.
I might upload a testversion in an hour or so, but it is not adapted to puppy in any way yet.

hm, now I also have the problems with the "floating" trayicons.

In Fluxbox from GuestToo they work.
In my compiled one they just work with the "init"-file from G2, but when I choose another theme, tey are not longer part of the panel.

This will need some more configuration.

MU,
this link might be of some help to you. It talks about compiling fluxbox with --enable-kde to support panel icons.

i have had update fluxbox in my todo list (for a long time) ... i also have not updated the fluxbox menu for 1.0.6

i think i enabled most compile options when i built fluxbox, but i probably did not enable xinerama support, and i probably did not enable kde or gnome support either

ok, recompiled fluxbox with all options except nls (native language support). I got errors with that.

Screenshot:
http://dotpups.de/pics/puppy/fluxaqua.jpg

Theme Aqua on Kdrive-XVesa with shadows.

The menu-button on bottom-left is wxb-menue.
It would make sense to adapt Rarsas XDG-Menuescript for fluxbox.

Now I will try to make a Dotpup.

Earlier I might have messed up the icewm installation and so it was not working properly but with a new install it is working great with kde. So I would suggest icewm to be the default desktop manager for kde.

I will also try fluxbox + wxbmenu by MU and make a comparision of their memory usage.

klh I had a look at the symphomyos site. It looks great and uses the mezzo desktop (size 25 Mb).
