Slacko5.7 Browser upgrade

#1 Post by 8Geee »

An experimental configuration of the mini-eee using a newer version of Firefox.
The version chosen is esr45.7. This update went much smoother than the failed
esr45.6 update. There are new add-ons that I have configured. These appear to be
funxioning well. Adaware is now the ad-blocker with whitelist removed. Better
Privacy remains. Youtube All HTML5 remains. Redirect Cleaner is no longer avail-
able for FireFox recent editions. The new version allows filetypes to be checked.
Naturally sh, bin, ko, and so extensions have been added manually. FireFTP is
still included.

The use of FireFox esr45.7 has swelled the puppy quite a bit. GDMap now reports
440Mb, up from 400. The iso swelled from 135.0 to 156.0Mb. Configuration of
FF45esr7 included falsing loop, pocket, and sync. Not to mention the removal of
as many links as possible, and removing the search-engines. SSL/TLS concerns ARE
still valid, and several have been falsed, with required safe negotions TRUE.
Cookies can be saved, but NEVER 3rd-party types. The Browser will still flush
when closed, but will save primary cookies.

Otherwise, all Slackware updates are accomplished including libpng 1.4.20 (NOT
for the faint-hearted). Still waiting for the slackware update of openssl1.0.2j.

Interesting. I tried compiling Firefox 45.7esr tonight also as a test, but in slacko 6.3.2, using these parameters:

Code: Select all

../firefox-45.7.0esr/configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var --disable-gstreamer --disable-pulseaudio --without-intl-api --disable-webrtc --disable-updater --disable-safe-browsing --enable-raw --disable-parental-controls '--enable-optimize=-O3' --disable-necko-wifi --disable-maintenance-service --disable-gamepad --disable-directshow --disable-accessibility --disable-dbm --disable-webspeech --disable-eme --disable-debug-symbols --disable-crashreporter --disable-debug --enable-official-branding --enable-optimize --disable-tests --enable-release
The idea was taken from here. It's only about 10MB smaller squashed than the original though (nothing compared to "light").

edit: The right-click menu is also messed up and shows almost everything, I wonder which parameter changed that...

I made copy/paste of the dot mozilla file from root.

you might still wander about in the config... theres some nasty SSL/TLS stuff in there that needs changing. Plus disable loop, sync, and pocket. AND THE ADDRESS LINKS.

Besides, unless you NEED 45.7 esr, don't go there... stick with something smaller, and well configured from FF27 and up ( TLS1.2 security).

I have noticed my mini-eee went from 135Mb --> 156Mb just upgrading FF.
Memory in GDMap is +40Mb.

That Right-Click happens upon images and/or unknown file-types.

The Right-Click issue cropped up with the jump from ESR 38 to ESR 45
I am still running a compiled 38.8.0 ESR (in Slacko 5.7 and also Wheezy) which works well and runs very light compared to the "official builds" from mozilla.

I have not been able to pinpoint the cause although some months ago a forum poster was claiming to have solved it by applying patches and fixes.

Thanks OscarTalks. Glad it isn't just me. I'm browsing with your 38.8.0 slacko build now.

When I went to the slackware security advisories update page the right-click in FF27 got the same huge list posted above. I do believe this is picture as text or vice-versa, or an "unknown" type css script. FF just goes wonky for that. lol

BTW... in FF45.7 esr try opening a "New Tab"... SURPRISE !!! (not a good one either)
I got more tweaking for this one
