To make up for my pretty poor contribution to Woof development and testing so far, I am starting this thread to invite possible theme contributions/suggestions for Puppy 5 "Woof". I will post on the more artistic puppy threads, asking those with the aesthetic skills to contribute.

Puppy 4.2 was the first "community driven" puppy to break away from the tradition puppy linux "look", and enjoyed a lot of success (and I believe a lot of extra downloads) because of that. "Take what works...and use it again" is definitely something we can all get from from the whole 4.2.x development process.

It goes without saying that I have absolutely no influence of the choice of suggested theme, or whether any of the themes posted here will actually be used. That is someone elses decision....

If your feeling inspired, please post you suggestions below.

I would love to be able to contribute further...but I am partially colour blind and possess no discernible artistic skill whatsoever.

So....here a link to the existing JWM themes exchange, which details the two configuration files used in theming jwm "/root/.jwmrc" and "/root/.jwmrc-tray"...to see them you will need to click on the "eye" icon in the rox file manager to see the hidden files, and then "right-click">"open as text..." to view them (left clicking them brings up "no run action defined).

Some example configuration files can be found here, along with a host of themes that have already been contributed.

What do I believe a "good" theme for Puppy Linux should be?

Well...as we know Puppy should "be extremely friendly for Linux newbies", so remember that lots of "windows refugees" will be studying the new menus to find out how to do things the Linux way. Therefore a clear, easily read font will be a must, with good contrast between it and the background. One of the things most levelled at Linux (by those who fear the time their Windows skills will become redundant), is that it is difficult and complicated to use. A "good" theme should make the functions of the menus and icons stand out.

In short, to be "friendly" to Linux Newbies, it should be "attractive" to them, and perhaps even go as far as to be "familiar" to them...

One of the ways this could be achieved (although I agree not "technically" accurate) is to use the word "Start" on the menu button in the bottom left of the screen.

Puppy should also "breathe new life into old PCs". Lets face it, the types and age of computers that puppy are likely to be installed will not be winning any awards for "retro-chic". Likely they will be standard beige boxes. Therefore any Desktop style will need to be double modern looking to make up for this in order to make them desirable items to as many people as possible.

Suggestions for inspiration?

May I suggest this search on Digg.com for desktop. Digg uses an algorithm of "diggin up/diggin down" good/not so good articles, and theme collections are a popular item to post on Digg. Its sorted automatically in descending order by the most "approved" or "dugg".

Why Is it that everything you do is not needed and what is needed of you, you don't bother with???
You needed as a tester for applications, you are not needed as a rep for puppy graphics. I've already provided a theme for puppy 5. Included in the rox 2.9 package I providing, if you were testing puppy 5 applications like you should be, You would of known this. Man your a knob!

Why don't you actuall help out instead of wasting our time with these things, Really Puppy 5.0 is Barrys, and you do not have his permission to lead this. He will be building it, releasing it etc, got it ??

Wow, I stop coming to the forum for a few months and when I'm back it's poisonous?

Maybe through out those months you were assigned the spoke person role for Barry, or maybe the release bully? Maybe the one that tells people what they SHOULD be doing?

You're right about who chooses what goes in. If the one you offered is chosen then great. If not great too. Why would other people stop contributing with whatever they want?.
