Based on the reply email I received, they're distributing the first prototype for US$150. After that, only the barebones version (no wifi, no SD card, no batteries) will get shipped for $150. There are still issues with the prototype, like neither Flash 10 nor the new Skype is working.

If you go to there pricing quote area, Puppy Linux is already an option, they must of found some fixes or something.
Also I think they should donate like $2 each unit that they sell with puppy on it, Back to Barry. That would be a nice thing to do.

Considering that its only got 512MB...puppy or other lite linux are probably the only OS it can run...

Too bad it is not free like the name implies...ha!ha!

A couple days ago I received my new EduBook from Norhtec. After the exchange rate (US to CAD), shipping, duty, and taxes, the cost came to $240 and change. That was for the bare-bones EduBook with 512MB of RAM and a power cord (no HDD, no Wi-Fi, no batteries).

I installed the latest version of Puppy on to it and it works wonderfully, except for sound. For the life of me, I cannot get the sound "card" recognized.

I've also tried a few other light-weight Linux distros on the EduBook (even WattOS, which NorhTec says they ship with the EduBook), but either they didn't boot up or could not detect nether the sound card or ethernet port.

All in all, the EduBook is pretty good for what it is. Although, if watching videos is something you want to do, this isn't the best choice (especially with no sound). However, web browsing and light office duties suite it just fine. I have not come across a webpage yet that could not be displayed. Even my eyeOS web-desktop works great with it (and SeaMonkey).

If anyone is interested, this weekend I'll be posting a more complete review (with video) on my blog.. so I'll post a link here when I'm done.

I've e-mailed NorhTec for some help, to see if I can get sound working with Puppy. No reply as of yet. I'd really like to get sound working so, at least, I could listen to my MP3s and OGGs with the thing.

Do you know anything about the batteries that are used in the Edubook? They are AA yes, but a type that you can't buy in a supermarket or hardware store, so I was wondering where you would get them from -- is there an online supplier that would sell them cheap?
